Hi

For some background you can see my other thread https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/help-with-custom-victor-canera-halo-engagement-ring.186904/

Basically, since lurking around PS since the start of the year I was pretty set that I wanted a custom cushion halo diamond engagement ring from the US.

I had looked in London's diamond district and not seen any settings that I really liked in the halo style. They all seemed to look cheap and have lots of metal showing and they seemed expensive for what they were. All that I had seen had almost 'outlined' the pave with metal. So, I resigned myself to custom from across the pond.

Having posted in my other thread and some UK ladies making some good points about logistics, import tax and VAT (UK sales tax) I had one last look here in the UK and found the only one I have seen here so far that I even remotely like.

The negatives are:
  • not going to be of the quality/calibre/delicateness of those that are my dream settings (a La Canera, Kirsch etc)
prongs are not the delicate claw ones I wanted
It is more of a cathedral type setting than I wanted
its a RB rather than a cushion

but it would be:
  • quicker/more convenient/less hassle and stress
repairs logistically would be easier, as if anything goes wrong (stones fall out etc easier to replace/have fixed)
quite a bit cheaper (as through connections I could get a decent discount on this option)
not import tax/VAT/postage/Insurance to worry about
BF quite likes this one (although he does prefer the Canera or Kirsch ones which obviously would be expected!)
this one is crazy sparkly, photos and video do not show this
IRL couldn't see a gap between the stone and halo

I will attach the photos and link to YouTube vid

Any thoughts, especially from UK ladies that may have had the same experience/difficulty/desire for a US ring especially welcome.

I had thought I wanted around 1 to 1.5 ct in a modern cushion halo. However this ring has a 0.65 round brilliant, G colour, VVS - and I think it looks huge on my size 4 (UK h.5) finger!!!!! I am happy to be guided by overall size rather than sticking to an arbitrary point like minimum one 1 ct so that doesn't really bother me that much! Plus to get the ct or 1.5 ct I would likely have dropped to H colour and S1 clarity! It would be in platinum also.

I tried on the 1 ct and it didn't look any bigger as the stone was set higher with the halo almost under it slightly (which I really didn't like).

The ring is a 'Canadian Ice' so no conflict diamond so happy about that - aparently these Canadian diamonds come from the HW mines?)

Upgrading isnt that common here but I guess if I dont get the US one now its something for the future? Perhaps I could even visit the states and see the work in person first which would make me a lot happier. Reason being I have no doubt the ring will be gorgeous but whether I would think it would 100% suit me is another matter as I saw some videos of the Tiffancy Soleste then tried it one and was not so enamoured! Anyway enough rambling see below! Thank you :wavey:

Hiya!

Hope you are well! I totally understand the difficulty of this decision, it's deciding between buying a beautiful made ring based in the US or a ring in the UK. I have also gone through almost every single jewelry store in Hatton Garden and I didn't like their designs at all.

I have tried to reason with myself between buying a ring in the UK or in the US and eventually I made a decision to buy it in the US due to the beautiful work I've seen by VC, SK, LM and others! The only difference is that I travel to the US quite often and can collect the ring there when i'm back for work etc. You can always arrange a flight to New York? Pre 4th of July you can get a return for 400 quid?

I posted a thread before

There was a lady who had her ring made in the UK very similar to Lucy Campbell ring, its beautiful! You may want to check him out, he does work for the Bond Street Jewellers, so it may be up your ally.

Hope you find the ring your looking for!!!

btw the ring looks pretty! the prong looks a bit prominent in comparison to VC/SK work... but im not an expert lol.

Hey OP, did you get a quote from ERD, curious to see how that stocks up against VC and SK?

Kathness, thank you thank you thank you for the helpful information you have provided which is so great!

I read your own thread and I too was considering Daniel Prince and I am so dissapointed, and shocked actually, to hear of your experience, quite off putting!

Also nice to know I am not weird and you did not find anything really in Hatton Garden! Just seemed a bit low rent to me!

I also checked out the thread you suggested and from this looked at Tom Hubbard's page and he had a halo setting but only a face down shot on the page and not any other angles or profile shots (why if you are a ring seller do you have one photo only dont they know we want/need details so frustrating) but thought I might contact him and get full details on that.

I just want to make sure I have considered all options before making the final decision as if there was someone here that could give me the look I am after then its worth looking at!

I am not a good flyer to wouldnt want to go to US for just a weekend to pick up my ring but do plan on doing a tour of the US for honeymoon and Vega is even a possible wedding destination so I have thought I could tie that in with an upgrade at that time so possibly something for the future.

But I really appreciate your input and its good to speak with someone who has had the same dilemma! Wish there was a Pricescope UK!!!

WillyDiamond, I looked through various threads on PS to get a feel for ERD and to ascertain their prices and I know from this what their absolute lowest price on a similar setting would be (and that was only so low as a diamond was being bought from them also) and it is only around $1000 less than SK. There i=would still be the same VAT/import tax logistical problems and I feel my feelings have now been crystallized so that I would only go through those for the dream ring which would be either VC or possibly even SK now (thanks to the suggestions by Charmypoo and others on my other thread as I had before that only considered VC) but thanks for your suggestion and I did see some lovely work from them.

Thanks to you both though! 8-)

It's your coin, $1000 is alot of wood. Best of luck and I hope it comes out great.

No problem OP - I wouldn't discount Daniel Prince just yet due to my experience. I've heard so many people liking the work he has done. It was just unfortunate that my CS experience wasn't as great as others :).

Hatton Garden is defintiely a facinating place, I could spend hours there looking at rings but the jewellers with exquiste rings tend to be in one of those offices above the shops and often by bookings only. However I did noticed that most of the jewellers on the high street at Hatton Garden are offering CAD design options with no extra charge! That could be an option if you wanted to ensure that you get the right design you want.

I have spoken to Tom Hubbard before and he seems really knowledgable and very experience. I think he has a show room, might be worth a visit?

I definitely made sure that I looked at all options and try to make a decision based on the criteiras you have set yourself with!

Good luck with your ring hunting and don't forget to post pictures once they are complete!!! :)

Gosh, tough position to be in! I'm in the US but started working with an overseas vendor last fall. Unfortunately I've had to put it on hold for the time being. I understand how difficult and expensive the logistics can be....everything from finding an insurer to shipping etc. I can't tell you how many times I've considered purchasing a stock setting for my stone so that I could have something NOW as opposed to waiting for the time to be right and working with my preferred vendor. I've decided that it's worth the wait to have exactly what I want. I know that for ME, if I moved ahead and purchased something else, it would never feel the same and I would always wish that I had waited it out to get THE ONE that really made my heart sing and dance! I would hate for you to purchase the best option immediately available to you only to regret it every time that you looked at your ring. You've put a lot of work and effort into finding the perfect ring, I would want it to be just that.....perfect. I have a feeling that you know exactly what you want, and fear that anything less will be unsatisfying.

Hello, thanks for replies further comments and haven't been on the computer until now just my tablet and I hate trying to type on that! Anyway I will perhaps give Daniel Prince a visit then and see if I can see any further examples of his work and hopefully the customer service side has improved and will also visit the Tom Hubbard showroom too and see what that is like.

When I was in Hatton Garden it was 'interesting' but I just didn't feel like it was that relaxed as soon as they seen you looking in a shop window they were on you giving you the spiel and that instantly makes me want to run away. Also lack of knowledge was astounding. When I tried on the first ring and enquired if it was a cushion (as it looked like it to me) I was told no, I asked again and said are you sure and she went and asked her colleague and low and behold it was. Then I wanted to know the dimensions of the cushion (essential I think for any cushion buyer because they can face up so differently) and she said Oh I don't know its on the cert! No move to get the cert or tell me this essential info!!!!!!!!!!! Needless to say I got up and left!

And it is a good point that I perhaps have thought of settling too easily and I am usually not one to do that but its just that I have been looking and reading and learning from months now and I just want the ring on my finger already lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Getting a little impatient but I have to remind myself that if I have waited this long what's a little longer and that it will be worth it in the end.

Willydiamond I didn't mean that $1000 is not a lot I meant that was BEST case scenario if you are buying a diamond (and that poster was buying a 10k diamond) and they gave you the setting at rock (excuse the pun) bottom prices it was around 1000 cheaper than SK so my expection from reading other posts and me not getting a stone from them is that the differential would be much smaller than that so for a few hundred dollars saved would just rather go with the SK I think if going to do the US route!

The only thing that is bothering me is I want to try a SK/VC style halo first to make sure I like it (as I loved the Tiffany Soleste but didn't feel it actually suited me when I tried it on!). So, with that in mind, I thought I may try on the HW mircopave but when I emailed and asked the price (not that I was contemplating buying it but I thought if it was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over my budget I wouldn't even be comfortable setting foot in the shop) I found out that a 1 ct Harry Winston Micropave ring STARTS at £20k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Needless to say I don't even want to go and try it! Anyone know if the De Beers Aura is similarly priced?

Thanks again! :wink2:

Hiya - I totally understand about the lack of information the jewelers have at Hatton Garden (the young sales people) however, I do think the old school peeps/ owners tend to be very knowledgeable ...But then again being in this forum allows us to educate ourselves with the help of experienced people.

I remember going to de beers and asked the sales person what kind of pave is the Aura Ring ( halo cushion ) she had no clue what it was... I asked how wide the halo was... she had no idea either >.< . You should definitely go to de beers and try on their Aura range to give you an idea if you would like the SK/VC type of halos? The price range is less than HW... that's for sure! You can call up Bond Street branch and see what they have available. But if my memory serves me right you can get an Aura from £10k

Kathness

Thank you for your post again you are a wealth of information! Any further nuggets please feel free to post :-)

I think you are right the way the sales people look at knowledge would be different from say the owner. I have had a response to my emails from Tom Hubbard and Daniel Prince. I have asked for some further details/photos so will let you know how I get on there when I hear further.

Honestly you could have knocked me over with a feather when I heard £20 for the HW. When I went to Tiffany the Solesete I tried on was around £7.5k for a 0.5 ct double halo and the 0.65 was around £8.5k so not ridiculous and something that if I really wanted I could have had! I appreciate the HW halo starts at a much bigger 1 ct but still I just wasn't expecting that sorta price!

Anyway, I have emailed De Beers if I don't get a response I will call and I will definitely try and go and try on an Aura to make sure after all this debating that I am happy with the SK/VC type halo shape.

Just do not know why there is nothing like that here! I mean I even saw a £40k Boodles Halo ring on eBay I think it was a round brilliant and it was also in that cathedral setting so weird why no where likes to offer the HW type cushion halo here!

:D

Goodluck! Do let me know how you get on!!!!:) :appl:

Hello

Well De Beers got back to me Aura starts from around £7k for around 0.75 centre stone so I have an appointment to go view that on Saturday and while I have heard it is a lot more 'metally' that the Harry Winston at least it will give me an idea of the shape and form of the SK/VC type halo which is all I am looking for at this stage.

Hopefully once I try it I will love the style on my finger as much as I have loved seeing it on all the PS pictures!

I heard back from Tom Hubbard and he sent me pictures of a round milgrain brightcut pave round halo ring (so completely different from what I am looking for/asked for) and said he did not have any other pictures of a cushion halo, which I thought was a little odd/disappointing as there is one pictured on his website??!

Anyway he said it would be easy to do a HW inspired but without seeing at least that he has done something similar in the past and some pictures I think I would be too nervous to go down that route. He did say he could get the ring done and before any pave set I could have a look an approve / tweak but I just think I would rather go with someone trusted for the custom work or buy something off the shelf that I know exactly what it looks like when finished.

I don't think I want to go custom with an unknown quantity. So I guess half the battle of working out what you do want is working out what you don't want so baby steps but further Crystallisation has occurred!

Will update after Saturday!

Looking forward to it Fashionbabee!!

Hello

So, I went to De Beers and tried on the Aura. Here is the link to my YouTube channel to see it on!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baYzeIcl5cc

It was a lot more dainty that I thought it would be (from what I read on pricescope others think it 'metally') and from the pictures on the website.

I tired the 0.72 ct H centre stone one. I noted it has flush fitting stems, which I personally don't like as much and on my one if I go custom I would want the donut and basket under gallery.

This was boyfriends favourite so far and I explained to him that is is not even as nice as VC/SK one would be. He said to forget the off the shelf easy option. He thinks US on, or even the Soleste (as he said he does like that one on me).

The Soleste in the video is 0.65 ct centre stone and I actually tried on a 0.5 ct centre stone after the Aura and it sat completely differently. The smaller halo made it not sit as high and it didn't overwhelm my finger. Who knew such a small difference could make all the difference and that actually in this case I think smaller is better?!!!

Anyway have a look at the vids and let me know any opinions!

Thank you :D

Hi there! :wavey:

I read through your threat and have a suggestion for you. If you are thinking of coming to the States for either a destination wedding or your honeymoon, you could just wait to pick up your VC or SK then. I'm not sure how far off your wedding date is, or if you would want to wait that long. Logistically, it would be much easier! You could get a nice band or a temp ring for now. When I was looking for my original ering, I was very impatient and wanted it right away. Instant gratification! I didn't like it for very long. If you are not planning on an upgrade, and have your heart set on a SK or VC, I suggest to just wait it out until you are here. You will wear this ring for a looooong time and look at it every day. You may regret not getting what you really wanted when you had the opportunity.

BTW, I *just* received my VC Emilya halo upgrade set two days ago and I LOVE it! It is beautiful and so well made. I have an oval halo that I purchased from a chain store, and it does not compair. My VC really puts the oval halo to shame.

I will be in Dorset in Oct for a wedding. I will volunteer to transport your ring for you. :wink2:

I love the aura de beers! It's beautiful! But i think you need to be happy with either of this ring. very tough decision! But if your bf says that US is on.. might be an option to go with VC, SK or LM.

Hello, yep more I think about it it seems US is the way to go! I just heard more from Daniel Prince who advised that a custom HW style mount from him would be around £4000. I wrote back to thank him but explain that the quote from SK, even with VAT and customers charges, was still considerably cheaper!!

Just thought I would update! 8-)

He sent some pictures but they are pdf so cannot post!

Hey OP, since you went to DeBeers, just for comparison you may want to look at the Tiffany Embrace and the Cartier Destinee, they are both beautiful, but you are paying for the name, but for comparison, why not. My wife's upgraded ER which I posted on SMTB is an offshoot of those designs. Best of luck.

Hello

Thanks for those suggestions as I have never even heard of those before! For the Tiffany Soleste I may have paid (despite the brand premium) for it because it was beautiful and unique but the Aura I felt while useful for comparison was not a patch on the lovely ERD/SK/VC rings I have seen on here! They all look much nicer! But it was a useful excersize as it let me see proportions and that type of style in real life!

Anyhoo now looking for centre stone and started new thread for that so please feel free to read and suggest.

Much love and thanks so far to all!
