Hi everyone! The search is on, and I couldn't be more excited!! :D

My goal is to find an excellent cut and maximize size (on a diameter basis*, not ct basis) within my budget. *Caveat being I've found the 60/60 stones have the largest diameters, but I'd like to avoid them for now.

I'm looking for a modern round brilliant diamond of 3 carats or larger, excellent cut (AGS 0 or under 2.0 on HCA), willing to go down to J color, and SI1 clarity (eye-clean from a few inches is a must!). My budget is around ~$40k.

I guess I should mention I'd ultimately like to get the diamond set in one of VC's halos, so would it be best to go through his sourcing program? I'm just not sure how that works.. whether you'd be able to compare whatever he sources vs. diamonds on other sites?

I am so thankful to have everyone's advice and appreciate the assistance in the hunt!! Thank you so much!

Here is one I've found so far, please let me know what you think:

I would just shoot out an email to BGD, WF and JA to see what they have and narrow it down from there. ERD would be another option. For larger stones they might not have them on their website so I know I had better luck by sending individual emails or calling them. VC sells MRB's that are lovely but you will pay a premium for them. If you are trying to max. out on size then I would stick with the other vendors as I think they are more budget friendly. But I definitely love your idea of haloing a big stone in a VC halo, but then again I'm a little biased as that is extremely similar to my ering.

Thanks, SB. So those vendors really don't mind if they help you in your search, but then you don't ultimately end up selecting one of their diamonds? For some reason I get pangs of guilt thinking about it.. I'm definitely not trying to take advantage of anyone, just trying to find the best stone in my budget :)

Pick just one vendor.

So Julie, if I were to continue with JA, do you think the one I posted looks good? Are there two others you would ask for gemologist review/IdealScopes on?

It looks really good. There isn't much else on JA that I really think beats it, since it is a nice color for a J. But since you get 3 free ones, might as well.

The IS isn't going to look as good but I'm curious if the gemologist is swayed by the extra size, and the inclusion at around 9 o'clock could be prongable: http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/3.71-carat-j-color-si2-clarity-very-good-cut-sku-93453

Here is one from WF http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2938285.htm?source=pricescope

Personally I like the white flash I color si1......the J are just too yellow for ering

Someone did bring up a good point. If you plan on putting your diamond in a halo you might be color sensative to the contrast. I know VC usually does F melee in his halo I believe, however for my setting I know he used G/H for my N/O diamond. He didn't want to go any lower then H. So at times you did see a color contrast between my diamond and the halo but it doesn't bother me.

I'd definitely like them to match as closely as possible, so I'll have to ask him. Thanks for bringing up the point.

Err sorry have to disagree. I think bgd is more expensive than whiteflash. Whiteflash is more expensive than VC.

I think its better to compare all the option available. VC can source you pretty stone as well

Thanks so much, all! DS, I've been watching that one on WF. There used to be one on BGD I was longing for as well, but I think it might have sold already. I've reached out to VC's sourcing service to ask what they think :)
