Hello,
I have been lurking for a while, and need some advice. My boyfriend recently acquired two rings from his mother to "buy sell or trade" for an engagement ring for me. Neither ring had sentimental value or are my style. One has an emerald cut center stone between 1-1.5 carats with baguettes on the sides, I don't have much experience with emerald cut so its hard for me to guess the size and quality. The other is a smaller three stone with round diamonds, these look like very good quality, but again, just a guess, and are probably .6, with two .4s. We are obviously going to get them appraised, but I was wondering how to go about turning these rings into one diamond.
What I have read about trading and selling diamonds on here is pretty scarey, but the other options would be to A. Accept one of the rings as is and be disappointed, B. Reset the largest stone (the emerald cut) and use the money for the other ring/side stones towards the band or C. Because he had saved money for the band separately, trade or sell both rings for a cut that I love, like an oval or cushion. I know I can't expect to get anywhere near retail, but do you think it is possible to get a decent sized diamond (at least 1 carat) from the old rings?
What should I do? I don't want to seem greedy, but she told him to do anything with them!
