A jeweler offered me this diamond for $3000. I haven’t yet seen it in person they just sent a copy of the GIA. Do you think this is a good value? Is there a better diamond in this price range that you would recommend for an engagement ring?

The HCA is well above a ‘2’, which is usually the threshold for pass or fail. If it was just a smidge over, I’d be flexible, IF there were pictures/images indicating it was okay. But if ‘buying blind’ with only a lab report, I’d give it a hard pass based on this ... but that’s me.

What exactly are your priorities and in what order? Color, Clarity, Carat, Cost? Rank those and put some parameters behind each to help us help you.

Around .75-.8 carat, D-H, eye clean so about SI 1 or better. Around $3k. And then excellent cut. Doesn’t need to be the cream of the crop especially with my budget but would like it to look nice. At least excellent GIA. Can you even tell the different with a triple x GIA and a AGS ideal in a stone this size?

Ranking is:
Cost (under or barely over $3k)
Cut
Carat
Color (H or better)
Clarity (as long as eye clean)

Well, the first thing to understand is that not all GIA XXX are created alike. It’s quite a range of ‘great’ to ‘ugh’ within the XXX, while AGS (I believe) is far more strict on cut, so the ‘range’ of their ideals is much ‘tighter’ if that makes sense. So with that in mind, I’d say, yes - it’s likely you would see a difference between an AGS ideal diamond and a GIA XXX, depending on where the XXX fell in the aforementioned range. To be honest/blunt, if the XXX is on the low end of the cost scale, it’s even more likely you would see the difference. So, to that point and given the size you’re considering, I’d suggest cut should be even more important in terms of comparing AGS Ideal and GIA XXX.

Thank you for posting your priorities/preferences. I (and others I’m sure) will help find some options for you that would be good candidates to consider; just give folks a little time to ‘shop’ for you. :wavey:

@SGY23 Here are four from Whiteflash; all ACAs (ideal cut), eye clean, and in budget and size range you’re looking. I did stretch down to a couple ‘I’ colored diamonds just so you have options. I didn’t see any diamonds in their Expert or Premium Select lines when I searched. These can give you something to look at in the mean time until more options are posted for your consideration.

Nope, I would absolutely not buy this stone.
