I am going tomorrow 12/10 with my nephew to select a halo setting for his .99 RB

This is where I intend to go . Please let me know if you Halo or setting ea Binisxperts agree or if we should go elsewhere.

ERD - 580 5th Avenue see MARK or Chris

IDJ Sheno

Firenze Jeweler (to see the ritani French Halo) 15 W 47th street ADRIENNE.

My nephew is the type to pick the first thing he sees so Please let me know which should be my first stop.

Thank you all so much

ERD is pretty much all custom work. Are you looking for ready made?

Re: GOING TO NYC Tuesday 12/10 to Select HALO SETTING NEED H

I'd go to IDJ first. They have lots of settings on display so your nephew can see hands on examples.

Re: GOING TO NYC Tuesday 12/10 to Select HALO SETTING NEED H

not sure what he wants but I do know we need starting point. Spoke to Chris and my nephew will go see him. Chris will take him to GIA to have his stone graded and they will talk settings. We can also swing by IRD. so thank you

Do you know what his setting budget is? Because he will get a better deal probably at IDJ. His stone is a size that can easily fit in most stock settings. Don't think he needs to go custom with a 1 ct stone.

Re: GOING TO NYC Tuesday 12/10 to Select HALO SETTING NEED H

Yeah my mistake I didn't realize that ERD was mostly custom. Although I kind of feel good that Chris will baby sit him through Taking him downstairs to GIA. Yes he could very well go with stock setting. I also directed him to IDJ. And Firenze jewelers store on 47th st which has the Ritani settings she likes. His budget is $3000 he thinks his gf wants more bling but I am trying to steer him beautiful and no gaudy....

Do you think Chris will be upfront about custom he did tell me that he has halo to show him ?..

Re: GOING TO NYC Tuesday 12/10 to Select HALO SETTING NEED H

I would probably skip ERD to be honest, since it would be a shame to take up their time when he can do better on a non-custom setting. The ring can be appraised after the stone is set for insurance purposes, and I probably wouldn't have a family stone (if that is what it is) GIA graded due to it being unlikely to get an ex cut grade if it is a previously ungraded stone. IDJ carries Gabriel and Co which has hundreds of halo designs if it doesn't see one of their stock halos that he likes.

Hmmmmm.... Okay duly noted. However I already made the intro....I don't want to mess with my nephew... chris is aware of the situation.

I am surprised that you suggest not getting the stone certified.....I understand why you said that. On the other hand not a fan of my mother in law so kinda want to know myself. I know that is so cruel.

But I will Tell my nephew about IDJ and suggest he goes there...thanks DS

Another vote for IDJ as your first stop. Best prices on ready made settings and depending on what needs done if he selects from stock, Yekutiel can usually get it done for you ASAP.

Say hi from Enerchi! :wavey: lol

IDJ! Their customer service is an easy experience--meaning it felt comfortable to try lots of options. Very friendly.

Heidi, I had to laugh about the MIL thing!

Back when I got my original e-ring (1 ct.), most diamonds weren't lab graded. I still have it but don't wear it anymore. I wouldn't want a GIA grade of "good" (or worse) on it, because even if it was still insured, I wouldn't want it replaced with "like quality"! Plus, no one would want to buy it with that grade, either! So really, there was no purpose in getting it graded. I did get appraisals back when I had it insured on a homeowner's rider, so I did have a relatively good idea of the specs, but the real specs would be depressing in the area of cut! I personally only see diamonds needing to be graded for insurance purposes if they are excellent stones or if one had an excellent stone they want to sell. Even my family diamond that was recut by BG (worth it because it had good color and clarity) is not graded, because I know it has excellent cut and Brian saw no reason for me to spend the money to have it graded since it will never be sold and an appraisal covers it on insurance. Sorry that was a little repetitive, but there are a lot of cases where I would get a stone graded and others where I would not (especially when the report won't make me happy! )

I would never BUY a round brilliant that wasn't graded, and I wouldn't want to buy an ungraded antique diamond unless I had a return policy in place in case the stone was not appraised or graded as represented in the sale.

Hope he has great success and let us know how it turns out!

Re: GOING TO NYC Tuesday 12/10 to Select HALO SETTING NEED H

I guess DS grading stems back to my EGL studs as I still struggle about having them GIA..certified.. I love my studs but part of me is so curious how off from EGL they are really in terms of cut over color or clarity

Regarding my nephew. At this point I will leave certifying the stone up to him . But I will definetrly let you all know.

it's going to snow so Tomorrow is being postponed which actually gives him more thinking time .
