So I have been involved in the long (but fun) process of bringing my dream engagement ring to life. I have the setting being made, the stone picked out and I thought everything was fine...

Until I saw a 2.25ct pear shaped padparadscha sapphire at an estate sale. It was love at first sight. The colors absolutely GLOW like a sunset. I could picture it in a rose gold halo setting. Now I''m seriously thinking I''m crazy to be wanting to reconsider this whole process. It took me 2 years to visualize what I wanted and now it''s gone right out the window.

I feel like I''m cheating on my ring

and unfortunately my budget is not going to allow for 2 projects. I am an asscher lover and I never even considered a pear until now. Should I go with my original plans, or follow my new idea?

It depends on how disappointed you''re going to be with your asscher.

Personally, I''d save the pad for an anniversary. One of the reasons I like diamonds for e-rings is because, as a colorless stone, is matches any wardrobe better than a colored stone. But then that''s me.

If I loved that colored stone, I''d grab it.

Diamonds are diamonds. Apart from antique cuts and the occasional interesting inclusion, they''re not unique and you can always find another. The only real limitation is cost: if you have enough money and a little patience, in the diamond world you can probably find anything you want.

Colored gemstones are, IMO, rarer and often unique in the precise hue and personality they show. If you see a particular shade that really, truly speaks to you, grab it, because that stone might never come along again.

if the Pad is calling your name, you should get it but that''s just me

becuase something that beautiful in the cut color and size in colored gemstone is somewhat difficult and not all the same, whereas a diamond, you could always find another colorless diamond around more readily than a one of kind estate piece perhaps.

pawn everything you got and get both? :P j/k

Not a bad idea.

Personally, I''ve always regreted last minute decisions. For me, it''s best to stick to the plan.

Well there is always something new to catch the eye. You may have the disease that many of us PSers have, always wanting something new and exciting.

Pads are difficult to buy, fakeys abound. I would not buy one without the help of an expert vendor. Checkout TravelingGal's looooooooong path to find hers

ETA I'd consult the colored stone forum people too, they are so helpful and knowledgable there!

Hmmm. It''s really not uncommon for us to second guess large jewelry purchases- especially an e-ring, which most of us are attempting to find a "forever ring", just the perfect perfect thing. No pressure!

I would say stick with the asscher you''ve wanted forever- it''s classic, and you know you''ve loved it for a long time. Just because you found another ring you love, doesn''t necessarily mean you are fickle or suddenly dislike your e-ring, right? A lot of us here on PS just love jewelry and there''s *always* something new we''re thinking about, whether or not we ever follow through or not!

Here''s what I''d do: take detailed pics of the pad and setting if possible (if the setting is partly what attracts you to it, of course). Then for a later anniversary work on putting one together that is similar.

If it''s a pricey piece of estate jewelry, it may take a while to move anyway. Like years. That does happen!

Buying Pads can be a minefield!!!! As Dreamer Dachsie has said, there are lots of "fakes" around. So, for example, do you prefer natural untreated gemstones? If so, be uber careful when buying a Pad because the market is flooded with beryllium diffused sapphires so they look like Pads but are actually sapphires coloured to look like a Pad. Just because it''s in an Estate piece it doesn''t guarantee authenticity. You then have to consider whether you''re ok about heated gemstones or whether you''d want a totally natural unheated/untreated gemstone. If so you''ll be paying expotentially more.

Then the second point to consider is whether the Pad would be classified as a Pad if sent to a lab or whether it''s a pretty colour sapphire. This will ultimately affect the value.

So ............. you''ve picked one of the hardest gemstones to buy and be confident about without the help of an expert.

From my point of view, I love diamonds but also adore coloured gemstones. Pads are incredibly difficult as a colour to wear with everything and strangely, some tones can look a bit skin toned so disappear into your hand - others are much stronger in colour.
For an e-ring, I''d be tempted to go with the Asscher because you KNOW you love Asschers and an Asscher diamond will always be beautiful. However, I hate to say it (and this is enabling of the highest order!) I would also buy the Pad and put it away for an anniversary/birthday etc BUT only if I was assured that this was a "real" Pad and was appraised as such.

Hmm...as both someone who is conservative when it comes to large purchases BUT is also an impulsive shopper...I say stick to your original plans and get the asscher. It''s what you''ve planned for for a long time, and it''s what you want.

And then, start putting money away in a "pad fund" and start doing intensive research into shopping for a pad. I''ve never bought one or looked for one, but having read the various experiences of other PSers, it seems like a potentially tricky purchase, and one that might require a long time. So educate yourself, save up, and when your fund gets large enough, THEN pull the trigger on a pad. Unlike diamonds, where you can be reasonably sure as to quality based on numbers, it seems like pad-shopping is so much ore difficult that time to learn and save can only help.

I went ahead and got it. It''s in the appraisal process now... I just knew that a color like this does not come along every day. It''s like a tiny glowing planet on my hand... I''m in love.

That said, my asscher project is still a go. I know I will wear it proudly as an ering for a long, long time. I just need to eat ramen noodles for a few months now

Thanks for the excellent input, everyone! AND also forgot to mention, the asscher I''m using for my ering is actually a sapphire too, but it''s a very light pink (not a padparadscha).

Both sound awesome! I also love Ramen
