GOG custom setting??

Has anyone ever had a custom setting made by Good Old Gold? If so, how is it? Would you recommend?

I am looking at a solitaire setting for the .78 AVC I have just bought. I want a very delicate setting, thin shank, double claw prongs in WG. I have a quote from Steven Kirsch and for comparisons sake I also got one from GOG, which is several hundred less. I can't seem to find many examples of GOG custom work. I wanted to go with Steven however as this I'd a really simple solitaire setting I don't know if its worth the extr cost or not. But i do want to get those Claw prongs right.....

Reviews, opinions or pics appreciated!
 
What methodology is being quoted by the vendors? hand-forged? cad/cast? Has that been made clear with the quotes?
 
I would suspect that Steven's is handforged and GOG's is CAD.
 
Steven's is hand forged, and I had written back to GOG's quote to confirm that but haven't heard back as yet.
 
Steven's work is probably all hand forged. GOG can perhaps do both? But perhaps in this case CAD/CAST is quoted?
 
I confirmed with GOG the quote they sent me was for CAD/cast. They can quote hand forged for me which I'm guessing will end up close to Steven's quote. What I'm wondering is if its worth the extra for hand forged or not? If I was getting pave I would definitely go with Steven but I am doing a solitaire. Attached is a photo of a WF ring I really like, so it would be based on that but with a few little alterations. I want it to be super delicate, which I imagine is going to be more likely with hand forged (but having no experience with this, hence why I am asking!) just not sure if it is necessary for this sort of setting to justify the $650 difference in price, or what GOG's custom settings are like.

Since you like the WF ring have you thought of getting a quote from them with the few alterations? I only ask because I see a lot of WF setting on here as opposed to GOG. For me personally I to am considering a GOG AVC and would be having a SK setting, so for me it would be worth the extra funds. However Im not sure if your budget would be happy with that or if you are planning on upgrading within the next few years. If this is going to be a forever stone though I would definitely go with SK.

I can't comment on GOG settings, but I did have my ring made by Steven Kirsch. It looks like the setting you like has double claw prongs? If so, those can be challenging. Steven does a wonderful job of making them delicate (always handforged). Just to throw out another idea, I think you should check out ERD (enagement rings direct). They do both CAD and handforged rings and most likely lower in price than GOG or SK. I am quite impressed with some of their rings. (I have worked with them for a diamond only.)

If you can swing it, I'd go with Steven. With the double claw prongs, the bench makes a difference. Plus the fluid line Steven gets are just yummy.
 
The quote from Steven is still less than I was quoted from local jewellers so its ok, but of course if I can save money and still get something great from GOG that's always good!

I did contact WF but they won't set an outside stone.

I also contacted ERD twice but have had no response.

The double claw prongs are why I was thinking of going with Steven initially, I want these to be right and was hoping someone migh have had some done by GOG for me to see!

There won't be an upgrade, this is going to be a forever stone and setting. I have tried to choose something really timeless.

Hi Philly!

We've done plenty of double claw. I believe I have video of it as well. Ask Lynda or whoever is helping you and they'll forward you examples for you to see.

If it was me I would consider going with a die struck shank with a cast head.
When it comes to delicate shanks the extra strength of die struck is worth it to me.
Then you get the fluid lines from casting in the head also.

I agree. I feel like a lot of the GOG settings posted on here are a tad on the chunky side and I don't think I've seen anything from them with claw prongs. I'd love to see the video that Jon mentioned above though!
