GIA vs AGS for a tranny?

IMG_6263__09522.1487698539.1280.1280.jpgIMG_6262__26800.1487698527.1280.1280.jpg

The whole color thing may just be wishful thinking on my part. I have another OEC L that is set in RG and I occasionally notice the tint. After playing with this stone for several days, I still didn't really notice the tint. Maybe it is just a better cut or the stones personality. I just figured it was worth considering if I am sending the stone for inscription anyways. In the side view photo I do see a little tint in the girdle area, but not as much IRL. Maybe it's just my old eyes.

@Octo2005 - you have purchased my dream diamond. I have been eyeing this beauty since it was originally listed. I hope you get many years of enjoyment from it. And please post lots of pictures once you have it set so I can continue to ogle this beauty :lickout:. I know the GIA lab report shows it as a round brilliant which surprised me. I thought it would have labeled as circular brilliant which is what they normally call transitional. That alone would make me want to have it re-graded. That would be my concern if I owned it because it's not a modern round brilliant and I would want my report to show the correct cut if it ever needed to replaced.

Gosh that's a pretty stone  How are you going to set it? nothing useful to contribute with respect to the grading sorry.

Thank you! I know I had been eyeing it for sometime and when she marked it down, I took it as a sign. I actually got very lucky. I purchased it online and then Erica had sent me an email that there was an error in the system and it was already on it's way to it's new home. Fortunately, for me they decided not to keep it (they must be crazy:lol-2:), so now she is mine. I am very pleased, as it is even prettier in person. I didn't want to send it back to set and wore it in the ring holder around my house for a few days:kiss2:.

Yes, I was surprised to see it listed as a round brilliant also. I have also seen listed as Old European Brilliant on reports, but I do not know enough about it all.

Thank you!

Erica is making a custom setting. I will have to start a thread when the CAD's come, but I wanted to do a platinum setting with a lotus petal type basket with small tapered diamond shoulders. I can't wait to see it come together.

Do you think it will be fine in platinum being an L?

I am so glad this diamond has gone to a good home. You have no idea how I've lusted over it. I seriously contemplated buying it because it has the facet pattern I'm after. The problem is woman just don't wear bigger diamonds where I live. I would be too self conscious and it would just end up sitting in the safe.

Missy's Bea is an L and I believe hers is set in platinum. I think it will look gorgeous in platinum. I would say pick the metal colour you are most comfortable wearing. She will look beautiful regardless what you choose!

Beautiful stone at amazing size!
I would advise owners of every Old cut diamond NOT to do two things: not to facet the girdle and not to inscribe a non-faceted girdle.
Bruted/polished girdle dives so much character to an antique diamond!

What a gorgeous OEC! LOVE.

Yes you are correct @Poodles4me. Bea is set in platinum and I love platinum for her...it complements her L very beautifully IMO. Good luck with your setting choose @Octo2005. You have a gorgeous OEC!

Thank you - I will be sure to come back and share!

Believe me I know the struggle. I need to quit looking at all of the vendors sites:wall: I have several things that I have been drooling over for awhile. First step is admitting that I have a problem:P2

I will have to go back and look at the beautiful Bea and refresh my memory. I prefer the platinum, because I think it is more neutral and can be worn with other colored pieces, but I don't want to draw attention to any tint. Erica said that she thought it would be great in the platinum, so I am feeling good about going that direction.

Thank you.

Bea is absolutely stunning and looks amazing on your fingers! Almost total finger coverage, I am jealous. I am also a size 6 finger, but I don't think that I will get that much presence since my fingers are short and chubby. Do you think they have liposuction for fingers?:lol-2:

I like the way that your basket is on your setting. Do you find that the metal being that close to the stone in profile hides or emphasizes the color noticeable in the side view of the stone? I was planning on a Lotus petal type basket (like on the LAD Anne) to "hide" the side view of the stone, but concerned it might just draw more attention to the color.

Thank you.

Thank you @Octo2005! Haha I want finger lipo too...sign me up.

I find that the platinum really works well with her coloring. I never had her in any other setting so I cannot say if she would look more or less tinted in a different setting but my best guess is her setting now de-emhpasizes her color. Tint is viewed from most the side view and I would say the metal hides it from the profile view. And face up she always looks white to me. So I think the Lotus petal type basket might work well for your stone. Good luck! I am sure whatever you decide your gorgeous stone will look amazing in her new home.:appl:

Thank you for the feedback. That was my thought also, about the basket hiding the tint, but I had't seen an example to be sure.

@Octo2005 - I plan on living vicariously through you so I am looking forward to LOTS of pictures once your beauty is set. I have my list of rings on PS I like to regularly ogle, including Missy's Bea.

This isn't really helpful because it's not a tranny or OEC, but I have a 1 carat MRB that is an M colour and set in yellow gold. I rarely notice the colour from the top, mostly just the side. My setting does have a fairly open basket. When I do see the soft ivory/buttery tint I just think it's part of it's charm. I have to admit that I was always afraid of buying a diamond in that colour range but once I saw my M my opinion quickly changed.

@Poodles4me - Thank you for sharing your experiences with your M. I agree, I was very worried about the color, but seeing it in person  it knocked my socks off. By itself, I don't notice any color/tint 99% of the time. I was just a little concerned that the icy white of platinum might bring out a little more contrast.

I will be sure to post lots of pictures when it is done!
