getting started ... wedding ring / band

We got married recently but didn't select wedding rings; no engagement ring, either.

We may end up getting rings, and I've just started to look around. At first, I thought it might be nice to get matching simple, plain bands, in either gold or platinum. I like the way a traditional-ish band looks, but when I actually tried some on I was surprised that they didn't look as nice on me as I find they look on others.

So, I started to look at diamond bands. I guess the ones I saw would count as "eternity bands" as the stones go all the way around. The band I liked best was the Soleste (yes, I was at Tiffany). The salesperson showed me a similar band with channel set diamonds. I liked that ring as well, but maybe not quite as much as the Soleste.

We still plan to shop around. I hear good stuff about Blue Nile (and have actually bought pearl earrings from them), but I'm thinking it's important for me to try on different rings, given my experience with how the plain bands looked on me.

What is the cut and setting of the Soleste, so I know what to look for as we shop around?

Any other suggestions for what I should look for in a wedding band, especially if we go for an eternity ring?

I don't want to have to worry about the ring catching on things, so I guess that's one consideration, for the setting. I guess I might want to stack rings, at some point. And, I haven't given up entirely on finding a simple gold or platinum band, but I could also see wanting an eternity band or similar to wear on occasion. So, if the plain band and eternity band could be worn together, that would be nice!

The Soleste is a french pave band, where the top is kinda rounded over.

This Blue Nile band is very similar to the Soleste, although not a full eternity.

Just be aware that re-sizing a full eternity can range from hard (read-expensive) to impossible. I'd rate this style as near impossible to make smaller, expensive to make bigger.

I have a custom version like this that I had them place the diamonds much closer. Not easy to re-size, but I've had it done!

I have a blue nile "riviera" eternity band and I love it. It sits nice and low and doesn't snag at all

Being a guy and to the point I have to select a band for the wedding I've seen and tried on quite a few bands. Size, width and thickness probably varies from you but some things may remain.

For instance I've learned comfort fit is a must for me. Also while I like the aesthetics of a flat pipe cut ring, I don't care for the little sharp edges it creates in the upper lips where the comfort fit part doesn't exist.

Weight is a big deal. As in not enough weight. My favorite is probably the weight of tungsten but platinum or WG feels nice too. Titanium and zirconium is way too light for my preference as they feel cheap to me. Recently I tried some cobalt chrome and it is kind of a medium heavy weight, meaning probably the lightest I would go.

The ladies can answer better about the draw to an eternity band, but I think it has to be it looks the same regardless how the ring spins. Guy logic tells me you save money going half or 3/4 and don't have to worry about chipping diamonds or the surfaces the diamond band touches. Plus as Rocky mentioned, resizing is easy (assuming you stick with precious metals).

Also I find shopping online for settings doesn't always match in person experiences. Maybe because online the images are blown up but I've found many times I like rings in person I don't like online and vice versa as well. My fiancee is the same way.

If I wanted a low/no maintenance wedding band with just a little something special, hands down I would go with the Tiffany Etoile or similar style (I believe James Allen makes one similiar, as does eweddingbands.com, IIRC). It’s available in different widths and quite comfortable. It’s technically an eternity style with diamonds scattered all around it; and you can wear it on it’s own, or with an engagement ring if you decide to get one, or stack it with other bands. It is just such a classic, versatile style.

This was going to be my choice for a wedding band - hands down - until I stumbled upon an antique band that had engraving that was meaningful to me. If I ever need to replace it, this is what I will choose:

If you're willing to go with 1/2 or 3/4 eternity you can save a bit of money and it's resizable (double check with the vendor of any specific ring just to be sure). It's all a matter of whether rings tend to spin on you.

Are you 100% sold on a pave band? Because a band with common prongs of some type is going to be less likely to lose stones.



I'm absolutely in love with this one from High Performance Diamonds. The rounded design seems very comfortable and does not look like it would eat into the metal of a band placed next to it.

JamesAllen is always having sales and they have a ton of different eternities. Do you have a budget or a carat weight in mind for your ring?
