Gemprint or similar service?

I have a ring with diamond that has AGS number inscribed on the girdle. Is there a way to register this so that it can be traced via law enforcement if stolen? What is the "best" approach - I don't know much about Gemprint etc.

Afaik, if you keep track of the AGS number, you can provide that to local jewelers/pawn shops or the police and most of them will alert the police if it comes up. Some might not, but most places don't want to deal in stolen goods. Do you have insurance?

Thanks. Yes it is insured. Good suggestions - I was looking for something centralized though that pawn shops or police used so the work is not on me/my spouse.

Gemprint is the only one that I know of that holds up in court but the AGS girdle inscription is something that the people in pawn shops can actually see and that may appear on their reports to the police. As mentioned above, most people don't want anything to do with buying and selling of stolen stuff so they're pretty good at cooperating if they know what to do. Gemprint has the added benefit of generating a discount from a fair number of the insurance companies so you may want to do both.

In practice, I would point out that the 'work' associated with pursuing this sort of thing is part of what you're insuring against. To the extent that there's legwork to be done, it's mostly the job of the police and the insurer to do it.

The chances of actually recovering a stolen diamond is slim at best whether or not it is registered in Gemprint. The way I look at it is Gemprint sounds more like a gimmicky service than one that really offers very little value to the consumer. I would be more concerned with getting a good insurance policy.

Perhaps, but a 10% discount forever on your insurance for a single upfront fee is real value. With a fair number of clients, the payoff happens on day 1 and with most it's within a year or 3.
