I’m with you @dk168, I’m so peed off with people flouting the rules. 400 people at a wedding, the height of selfish stupidity. We’d all like to be able to do normal things, my son is getting married next week, and we can’t be there. We’re OK with it, they can’t put their life on hold forever, but I’m sick to death of reading about all these people just carrying on like they’re the only ones affected by this. Last weekend the police broke up an illegal gathering, and the people actually said they didn’t know there was a pandemic because they don‘t read the papers or watch the news

Your poor friend @Alex T, what a terrible loss, and now testing positive on top of it. I hope she doesn’t have a severe case and gets over this easily.

I hope your son and his wife (to be) have a wonderful wedding, Austina. I know it’s not the same, but I hope you get to have a belated but fantastic celebration with them once life returns to normal.

They found she had a massive & inoperable brain tumour. On Boxing Day, the father had a huge stroke, probably due to stress, and was admitted to the same hospital. They both tested negative for Covid, but within a few days they both tested positive, contracted in the hospital.

The father died first, followed by the mother 6 days later, both from Covid. Needless to say my lovely friends are reeling. The whole episode came from nowhere. And i can't go over to help even though they are only 4 miles away. I have just been sending lots of flowers & telephoning, as it's all i can do.

Oh no @Alex T that is just so awful for one family to have to cope with. Beyond devastating to happen all at once. And no hospital visiting, makes it all worse. A close friend of mine’s MIL died from COVID last week. She was elderly and not in good health at all, but that doesn’t help when you know she could have survived a bit longer. All very, very sad.

I'm getting close to the point where I think there should be armed guards on every street and you are just not allowed to leave your house for the next three weeks. (I know, it will never happen. And we are so unfamiliar with guns that a few years ago when there were two armed policemen in central station people openly stopped and stared.). But I don't know what else it is going to take to get people to stop and follow the rules because surely to goodness we are all now paying, with our health and finances, for the selfish twats that won't stop socialising.

Can you imange one of these wallies not going to an air raid shelter? Or not adhering to the black out ?

This would imply that people had a bit of common sense and community spirit, not to say backbone. Everyone is so entitled and too special to have to obey any rules.

I think the problem there is that the war was all encompassing. You could deny it as much as you wanted, but the bombs & death would prove otherwise. To most of the idiots at the moment, the virus is an invisible enemy. If they can't see it, it won't affect them.

The youth of today feel entitled. They should get free money & be allowed to just be an influencer. Some of my daughters 11 & 12 year old friends view being a YouTube as a very real career........

I have made it very clear to my girls that whilst it's up to them what they do with their lives & careers, they need to be happy & more importantly, they need to use their giant brains to get there. They are highly intelligent children (don't get THAT from me!) & very capable of great things. I don't want them to waste their intelligence being an influencer. If they work hard, they can reward themselves with anything they want & that tastes FAR sweeter than getting it for free.

I was explaining to my youngest literally yesterday why they get paid so much, when half way through she said "but they can't spend all of that money even if they tried, so why can't they give half of it to save the wildlife, the baby elephants & the planet?"

To be honest, I am shocked that this didn't happen last year. Almost as shocked, but not quite, as I was in June when the government announced they were going to start insisting all UK arrivals had a negative Covid test. WTF?? People were dying & we were all couped up at home, forceably, and they were still letting people in willy nilly?? I think up until that point they had put everyone into a full, hard lockdown & sat back on their arses thinking it would be enough. I was stunned when I found out that international flights had been allowed in as normal

Perhaps if they'd got their shit together sooner & closed the borders (easy given we are a small island) we wouldn't have reached the grim total of 100,000 deaths today.

Concur with the sentiments that frigging border should be closed a lot sooner!

Blanket ban and make them pay I'd say.

If there is a real essential need for business travel, then they can claim the hotel bill as business expense, no big deal!

@kipari the requirement for a negative test result prior to entering France was the cause of the mayhem in Dover and Folkestone shortly before Christmas, as lorry drivers could not cross the Channel to go home in time for Christmas without a negative test result.

I can appreciate new procedures would need time to implement, having worked in a highly regulated industry all my life.

However, 3 weeks for hotels to re-open???

One would have thought that particular industry would welcome the proposal for quarantine hotels with both arms, and to re-open as quickly as possible, to start having some money coming in again.

Did they not make their premises Covid-secure when they were allowed to re-open back in June/July 2020 when the first lockdown restrictions started to ease???

Granted extra staff will be required to petrol the premises to ensure compliance. However, I would like to believe there would be a pool of trained and qualified security personnel willing and waiting to be given the opportunity to work due to lack of events and venues that require their services during lockdown!!!

Hotel guareteen is working for us
We do have one weird case at the moment where a lady contracted the virus in isolation but was not symptomatic till after she left, but so far 14/ 15 of her close contacts are not infected (#15 just waiting on results)

It does cost a lot of money, but its keeping us virus free and our old and vaunarable safe
Looks like we won't be opening up our boarders in 2021 till after we know a whole lot more about the vacine's effectiveness
