From MSNBC:

But, he cautioned, “The huge gamble is that John McCain is 72, he’s had a couple of bouts with cancer.” If McCain wins the election, but then were to die or become disabled, Buchanan wondered, “Can this woman be President of the United States?”

Come on...haven''t we proved if Dubya can be president, ANYONE can?

LOL that is the "American dream" isn''t it? You always see those shows on TV where the teacher asks the little boy what they want to be when they grow up and the boy replies with the President of the United States. Haha

Too bad Condi didn''t want to run...

Oh, and happy 72nd bday to Senator McCain.
Weird, didn''t know it was his birthday today. I don''t know how I feel about sharing a b-day with McCain, but it''s also Michael Jackson''s...

My birthday always seems to be interesting. Just a few years ago, it was Katrina...

I think another big push for her is due to all her work with the natural gas pipeline. As natural resources are significant issue for this election, as well.
So do you think McCain made a deal with her? I will choose you as VP if you let me drill in your backyard???

So, I''ve been watching TV today, and the first thing everyone (the talking heads I mean) says about her is that she was almost Miss Alaska and won Miss Congeniality, then the third thing (after her being Gov of Alaska for 2 years) is that her husband works for BP.

Why on earth are these the most important facts that the news feels we need to know? And yes, I''m flipping between Fox and NBC, etc. I certainly hope that the third most important fact about me is my DH''s profession. On Fox they were discussing her up-do, which is an impressive hairdo, but when do you hear about male candidate''s spouse''s professions or hairstyles? Occasionally, but not the first thing ever.

It might help McCain reach the Hillary voters (hardly an anti-choice NRA bunch)...just like it helped Mondale?

This is going to be interesting!

Her name is Sarah Palin, from Alaska.
Rushing off to google her.
Do you think he would have chose her were it not for the Hillary stuff? Because I just do not see McCain naturally picking a woman.
Again, maybe you should look outside your usual ''news and information venues''. He has a great many top female staffers; why would a female VP be such a stretch?

You really can''t help yourself can you? There is a word I just thought to use for you but I''ll refrain. I didn''t check ANY news sources before my comment. It was a reaction to how he has been pandering to the bitter Hillary supporters in his own ads and comments. Boy, for someone that doesn''t want people to make assumptions about her, you sure do make A LOT about other people. Get a freaking grip woman. Go pray, or mediate, or whatever can bring you a sense of peace.

I''m sure that had something to do with it...but not all. Presidential candidates must listen to their critics and advisors alike and pick a VP who will garner them the most votes, that''s just how it is. A weakness in one area can often be fortified with a VP knowledgable in that area. I do find it funny that Sarah is a woman who is very much pro-life while Biden is a pro-choice Catholic. I feel like everyone, me included, will be doing a lot of research on her because she was such a ''dark horse'' VP pick.
Yeah I understand that, but I think he really must be counting on those pissed off Hillary supporters. That''s quite a bet to make. I hope I like her. And everyone can be pissy at me here but I''m going to say it: That way, when McCain dies in office (assuming he''s elected), we can have a great female President. I''m on vacation starting tomorrow without internet!!
39.gif
I wish I could spend the week researching her.

I''d say, instead of wanting to garner the Hillaryites, he probably saw it as a means to show that the Republican party is not just a bunch of male DC insiders. Some of us out here -- female and intelligent -- are Republican. You can tell it by PS, but there''s a bunch of us. And we all vote.

Maybe the Republican party is planning on being the 1st pary to get a female VP in office. Maybe they''ll be grooming her for President. Maybe they are already seeking out their minority candidate. Maybe they "think the race is on, let''s beat the Dems at their own game".

Or, maybe she''s the real deal, and got to this point ''cause she''s a smart woman.

I agree with you there...the media has a tendency to focus on and dissect the fashion of female political figures rather than their achievements. It is quite disheartening.

I think the whole idea that McCain chose Palin *solely* to get votes from Hillary backers is weak at best. Liberal feminists will not support Palin''s conservative views and thinking they will vote for McCain just because Palin is a woman doesn''t give them enough credit. If McCain truly wanted to "pander" to Hillary supporters he would not have chosen someone so right of center.

Yeah, she certainly does help the image of the Republican party as being a bunch of old, stodgy men out of touch with reality. I think having five children, one in the Army and one with Downs Syndrome, makes her very real. She has a better chance of getting the "mommy" vote than the "Hillary" vote.

I wondered about that...but the "mommy" side of me says I can barely manage to balance my life and I work from home and have ONE child. How is she going to be a mommy being second in command and doing all that needs to be done?

Not saying she can''t, but just a knee jerk mommy response.

I would imagine the say way any female CEO takes care of her family. I would also assume that her husband would quickly become a SATD, which would help out alot. Just speculating...

LMAO!! Are you unable to self reflect? You overreacted to an emoticon in which you accuse me of making all sorts of assumptions about you (which I never have or even thought to have), you went on to make assumptions about me, and you now assume (again) that I''m reading some "biased sources" with no evidence and it is ME that''s being rude? Holly, you really need to take a break hon, look in the mirror or put yourself in someone else''s shoes. You are CONSTANTLY rude to people here, most esp those LIW that are brave enough to post their troubles. So pardon me if I find it hilarious that you are attempting to accuse me of such. You come across as extremely bitter to me. Try chanting Nam Myo Ho Ren Kyo a few times.

I would hope daddy would stay at home. But a lot of female CEOs (or partners in law firms) have sitters. That''s not necessarily a bad thing.

Yes, please notify Ali and direct them to your posts. You keep replying to me with your little comments as if you are being the nicest person on Earth and then proceed to accuse me of being insulting and rude. Then when your hypocrisy is blantant pull one of these little holier than thou, I'm trying to be good routine. It's actually predictable at this point. Grow up.

I wish McCain were Palin''s running mate instead of vice versa, then I might consider votiing for the pair of them. I couldn''t care less that she''s a woman--she''s smart, she''s strong, she''s far removed from DC (a big plus for me). Some say she''s pro-gun, I''d call her anti-tyranny...po-TAY-to, po-TAH-to. A kick-butt woman with non-wishy-washy views from Alaska? Now that''s MY kind of woman.

And I''m with Trillionaire...let him stay home. It works for me!

More on Palin: http://www.slate.com/id/2198856/

Just received this:

To follow is a statement by Rodger Schlickeisen, president of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund.

“Senator McCain’s choice for a running mate is beyond belief. By choosing Sarah Palin, McCain has clearly made a decision to continue the Bush legacy of destructive environmental policies.

“Sarah Palin, whose husband works for BP (formerly British Petroleum), has repeatedly put special interests first when it comes to the environment. In her scant two years as governor, she has lobbied aggressively to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, pushed for more drilling off of Alaska’s coasts, and put special interests above science. Ms. Palin has made it clear through her actions that she is unwilling to do even as much as the Bush administration to address the impacts of global warming. Her most recent effort has been to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the polar bear from the endangered species list, putting Big Oil before sound science. As unbelievable as this may sound, this actually puts her to the right of the Bush administration.

“This is Senator McCain’s first significant choice in building his executive team and it’s a bad one. It has to raise serious doubts in the minds of voters about John McCain’s commitment to conservation, to addressing the impacts of global warming and to ensuring our country ends its dependency on oil.”
