Help! I have a diamond on hold. Can I get honest feedback before I pull the trigger?

We aren't too sensitive to color. I'm getting confirmation on how yellow it appears. Awaiting to hear if it's eye clean.

I don't know about the clarity, and color is impossible to judge on a computer screen, but the cut stats are lovely! Is this diamond for you or are you purchasing for someone else? Are you buying from someone with an upgrade policy?

Agreed on all of this! The pic of the stone is really hard to judge, but stats look good!

Thank you all! I'm buying for my GF and talking to USA certified diamonds (recommended from previous post so huge thanks for this). The upgrade policy seems strong.

With this limited info, any next steps you'd recommend to reduce the unknowns?

Hi @juniorsoprano -

Has your girlfriend specified wanting a particular size? If not, I'd drop down to an H color and maybe move up to an SI1. With an I SI2 there's a good chance close inspection will show inclusions. Even not close inspection will see tint. I think it's cut very nicely - but I think the rest of it is borderline for someone wanting to be in the safe zone.

Hi! Yes she wants something larger than 8.4mm in width/length (exact carat size was less an issue). She doesn’t prioritize high marks on color and clarity and have discussed the ranges of the diamond above. Although I do want to make sure there are not huge flaws with the stone

What is their upgrade policy?

The I color will look slightly ivory from the side, if one knows what to look for. As I learned, from a diamond I bought in 1993, you can train yourself to see tints. I didn't notice any in the I diamond I bought, from 1993 until about 2004 when I found Pricescope and started learning how to scrutinize. It looks ivory to me now, haha. But I don't mind color. I also like the L/M range, pale yellow.

As diamonds get larger, the size of the inclusions that can still be called SI2 or SI1 or whatever can be quite large. And may be visible to the naked eye. I'm one of the people who don't mind a visible inclusion or two as long as they are discrete and not obvious all the time. I bought an SI2 diamond with a dark crystal , garnet color. Once I found it with the naked eye, I always know how to position that diamond to make that inclusion stand out now. But I'd rather have the cut / color / size with affordability, than 100% eyeclean at all times and under all conditions. That's a compromise that some people can make and others can't. At that price, I think the only thing you can do at this point is to inspect that diamond at close range and in person to see what makes those inclusions visible and when. For that low price, it's not going to be eyeclean. The question will be Can the wearer live with it.

Just for the sake of accuracy, the proportions and clarity charts in your first post are from a GIA grading report. So the stone can't be called AGS 000 just because they ran a computer generated AGS light performance map. I take it the stone is GIA Excellent cut, polish, and symmetry? GIA I color?

I personally wouldn't buy it, but if she values size above all else, then I think you may not do much better at that price point. It is a nice cut which should be fine. I'd be a little concerned that the inclusions under the table might be seen when light hits them just the right way, but question your seller about that. It needs to be 100% eyeclean in all viewing.
