My family has had a 20 carat "Mexican Alexandrite" just sitting in a velvet box in a lingerie chest for what seems like forever! It belonged to my great uncle (Tio), and I felt it''s beauty was waning just by sitting in a drawer collecting dust - especially since no one had bothered to have it appraised - ever.
For my wedding, I had wanted to have a bezel set pendant made out of it, but thought it might have been over the top for my wedding day. Lacking the diamonds I would have needed for a halo, but having a ready set of 2 mm white sapphires available, I decided to have this stone set as halo bezel set necklace by my local jeweler.
It is so incredibly difficult to capture the colours that this thing produces - the blue is the hardest, but it varies from blue/purple/to a slight reddish purple. It''s obviously not real, but it''s really a shockingly beautiful stone, and had it been real, back into a safe it would have gone. But since it''s not a true Alexandrite, I have no problem wearing it with some of my more colourful work pieces.
