Eternity Ring Setting that will be gentle to my wedding ring

Hi everyone! Long time lurker here. I've been browsing through threads recently, looking for my perfect eternity band setting.

Somewhere between my indecisiveness, my husband's wanting to get me the perfect ring that I would love, and just wanting to get the wedding done and over with and spending a lot of time on that, the engagement ring moved down on the list of priorities. And now that we are coming up on our first anniversary (where did the time go?), I realize that while I don't think I miss not having an engagement ring - although I thoroughly enjoy looking at all of the gorgeous rings around here - I do want some sparkle in my life.

I was thinking of getting an eternity ring that I can wear with my plain platinum 3mm wedding ring for the time being, but I find myself a little lost in terms of eternity settings. I am a clutz, and I don't have the world's tiniest hands - the wedding ring is a size 8 3/4. I do want this ring to be fairly substantial and sparkly, so I was thinking somewhere in the ballpark of 20-25 pointers. I love the look of a U-prong, but I fear that 1) it will eat my wedding ring, and 2) that I will destroy it opening a door handle or carrying a bag of groceries. I would rather not go channel set as they look bulky to me. What's a girl to do?

Based on your concerns which are all valid, I wouldn't get an enternity band. I would rather have a 5 or 7 stone band with larger stones, whatever you need to get full finger coverage for your size.

I agree with the previous poster's suggestion of a 5 or 7 stone ring. I've heard of a lot of people not wearing their eternity rings with larger diamonds, because it's not comfortable to wear, since it creates a giant space between the fingers. Avoid this and just get diamonds on the top of the band.

I have a size 8 eternity .10 stones I wear all the time, uprong. I love it. Insurance will cover any damage if it occurs. Perhaps a channel set eternity if you are worried, but uprong showcases the diamonds so much better!

I guess my biggest concern is would it damage my wedding ring? I am sentimental and I would hate for that to happen. I am less worried about the eternity itself because like you said, insurance would cover damage. I know this is more of an issue when you have an eternity sitting near an engagement ring with diamonds rubbing against prongs...or am I overthinking this completely?

You might look at bezel set eternities in plat, or like PP said, look at a 5-7 stone with bigger stones and bezel set so you wouldn't worry about diamonds rubbing metal or diamonds getting whacked on something. I worry about that too....

I couldn't say if you are overthinking it or not, but I think as long as you don't do something like 3 sides pave, you will probably have more to worry about with banging diamonds than rubbing. My understanding of platinum is you tend to move metal around rather than lose it, so it can be scratched but the metal is still there and can be rebuffed, unlike gold where if you scratch it and repolish, you'd lose metal in the process.

My gold isn't even showing scratch marks from my eternity. A 5/7 stone would be the same except it would only show in the front.

I have a size 6.5 20pt eternity that a wear 24/7. I have plat and 18k yg bands that I sometimes wear. The bands are 2mm high and the diamond girdles do not scratch the bands. As long as your plat band is lower than the girdles or if is high, it curves at the top, you should be ok.
