First let me say I love a clean diamond.
We pay a fortune for that light performance.
As diamonds gets dirtier that beautiful light show grows dim.

I clean mine a couple times a day, especially when I go out to enjoy all the different lighting environments I may encounter.
I'm careful to not touch the stone so it stays clean.
I even moved my keys to the opposite side of my pants so I don't have to put my ring hand into my pocket - Talk about OCD!
23.gif

My ring has one large diamond that of course faces out - not into my palm.
Because the diamond always faces up I can be careful to keep it clean.

An eternity ring is free to rotate as you wear it.
Diamonds touch the adjacent fingers and some face your palm.

Eternity bands are stunningly beautiful when all sparkly and clean in a case.
But soon after you put it on and the two neighboring fingers touch it, and when it rotates all the diamonds get finger oil on them.
7.gif

As the day wears on it gets worse.

Next unless you are the Queen of England you do work with your hands.
I can't image even gripping the steering wheel of my car with precious diamonds pressing against the wheel.
All day long we grip, grab and hold thousands of things from doorknobs to car keys.
This will dirty the stones facing your palm and subject them to bent prongs and chipped diamonds.
A single-diamond ring (though susceptible to impact damage on that rare occasion you are careless) is easier to keep safe and clean because the rock faces out.

So does anyone else share my concerns about the eternity band?

Your list has several good reasons why an eternity band is in my opinion a waste of money and diamonds. One thing on the list not mentioned is the problem with future sizing.BTW,we share the same OCD...I do the same thing with my keys in the opposite pocket.

It nice when the eternity ring rotates and it is always the same design. I hate to have a band with only 5 or 6 diamonds on one part of the ring and keeps spinning and not being aligned with my engagement ring, it drives meabsolutely nuts. besides, the eternity band worn alone is a great piece, timeless.

Oh, I''m not saying I don''t like them.

I think they are exquisite.

BTW, does this thread belong on RockyTalk?

ITTA. A LONGGG time ago I thought they would be a waste of money but when I had a half band with diamonds it drove me NUTS when it would spin AGHHHH. Now that I have my eternity I LOVE the look from every angle. I''m very careful when holding something in that hand that I don''t push it against my eternity band.

I have a 9 stone channel, then a 3/4 eternity, and now a full. Here's how I was:

9 stone: NUTS and OCD trying to get it to face up
3/4: not so Nuts, but still bugged me when it would face up the little amount gold band
FULL: awww
16.gif
happier not worrying about which way face up, and even though it may seem like its a waste of money, I enjoy seeing that there are diamonds all around even under the palm, now I"m just worried about chipping one of those darn diamonds....
39.gif
so I may have to reset to a different eternity style.

My wedding band is an eternity band, and my engagement ring is set in an eternity band. I wear both all day long and they stay stunningly beautiful and sparkly from morning until night. Mine never look like they have any finger oil on them--maybe my dry hands are good for something.

People often ask if I just had them cleaned, sometimes at the end of a long day.

I much prefer an eternity band to a ring with diamonds only on the top part of the ring.

I suppose that''s why there are so many different styles available. If an eternity band drives you nuts, why wear one?

I am in complete and utter agreement with what you said. Even if the stones are not squeeky clean because of skin oil and imprints by my neighboring fingers, it doesnt bother remotely bother me as much as another band not aligning with my ering... It''s a good trade off in my opinion.

As for chipping the diamonds that face your palm--when you grab something (such as a doorknob) your fingers bend in and create a space between the object you're grabbing and the ring.

I've never knocked or hit the stones on the palm-side of my eternity bands on anything, but I have knocked or hit the center stone of my engagement ring more times than I can count.

I regularly bring my rings in to my jeweler to have them checked and cleaned. So far, so good.

I have a 5 stone ring now that I''m turning into an eternity because i don''t like seeing the palm side without diamonds. It''s driving me crazy!

I know what you mean about getting dirty, but regardless of how much you clean it, diamonds just attract dirt and dust even if they''re not touching anything. So if my eventual eternity band gets a bit dirtier from touching my palm, eh, i can live with it.

I like eternity bands, but would NEVER get one because I haaaaate the feeling on my pinky and middle finger. The pokey diamonds and pokey prongs.. omg owwie! I know there are different kinds, but I really prefer prong set.

Maybe smaller diamonds wouldn't hurt... I tried on that 5 ctw eternity band and besides the price tag it hurt my fingers!

Nice Avatar, Dear ;)

I like my eternity band that has very small stones set in a decent amount of metal (marquise & square shape metal, round stones). That way I don''t see that they''re dirty, too much. I do like that an eternity band can spin around and look the same, since I like my rings loose.

I would hate a larger stone eternity band, I think. Because yes, the fact that you couldn''t keep the stones clean would drive me bonkers. (I had a nice quality CZ eternity ring and haaated it- CZs suck up dirt & oil like wee sponges, much worse than diamonds, and it just looked terrible.)

Wait a minute.
Maybe I'll change it so it is just a itsy bitsy, teensy weenie bit crooked.

I have a lovely diamond and pink sapphire eternity band. What bugs me is that everytime I rub my hands together when I wash my hands, the ring will scratch the other hand when I forget to be careful.

Oh I don't wear my ring for others.
I wear it for myself to enjoy.

I enjoy my little package of excellence more when it is clean.

A dirty diamond is like a Ferrari running on one cylinder.

I love the look of eternity bands, but I don''t feel that they''re practical FOR ME. If I was to get one, I''d opt for a 5 stone band instead.

I'm a symmetry nut. I owned a 1/2 eternity once and couldn't last a week with it because the moment it got out of alignment with the other rings (there was a 1/2 eternity solitaire and 2 1/2 eternity bands) I would lose my mind! Keeping those rings aligned drove me to distraction and took over my life, lol.

Full eternity for me, all the way. I just periodically wipe the eternity band with a tissue or my shirt to clean off smudges. I see a lot of really dirty rings (I have friends who don't even remove their rings to put on hand lotion
23.gif
I could crawl out of my skin when I see that!) so I figure my rings are 100x cleaner than most of those around me, despite whatever smudges may accumulate. But since I'm also neurotic about cleaning my rings (clean them daily, dry with blowdryer, really over the top) I do remember to wipe them down throughout the day.

This goes back to a question that I remember debating way back about how much diamonds were merely fashion in which case optimal performance is partly irrelevant to fashionable design.

Nice to see you Kenny :)

I''m pretty OCD about my diamonds too. If DH happens to touch my stone I will surreptitiously clean it with my clothing. I don''t own an eternity but plan on getting one this year. Rings don''t really spin on me so I don''t think the oily diamonds would bother me as the only ones touching my palms would stay facing my palm. I think what would bother me is the clinking sound when I grab a metal railing. I wince when I scratch my bands against metal, I can''t imagine what would happen if I chipped a stone this way.

I have two eternity wedding bands. Frankly, I don''t care much if they get dirty or smudge. They can be cleaned easily. I got these rings to enjoy, and if I''m always getting my panties in a twist over them, then it''s not going to be much fun wearing them.

I used to be severely OCD about things, but I realized that it really hinders me from enjoying life because I would be constantly worried or annoyed. I''ve let loose a LOT, and this is just example of it.
