I’m looking to get a smaller emerald cut diamond. I’m more concerned with quality vs. size. My budget is 4-5k for the diamond. I like longer, probably between the range of 1.40 and 1.50. For color, I think I can go down to an H for the setting. I don’t mind under a carat if it is an excellent cut. My ring size is a 4.
Here are some that I am looking at JA, which is where the diamond will be purchased at:

Here are the settings that I am looking at:

IHMO, this is the nicest looking long stepped, colourless anything in the range - WWW ...

However, I believe that these videos do exagerate dark reflections in step cuts, so I would risk to call in and take a look at a less straightforward choice with more interesting proportions & longer for the same weight: WWW

Just fun!

If you wanted to consider a larger diamond with a plain setting by Leon Mege there is one listed in preloved that would meet your total budget.

I think the G might have a twisted pavilion?

The F has quite an interesting facet and contrast patterning to my eyes :) but I'm not sure if it is perhaps a little lacking in brightness face on?

I do like the faceting of the H a lot :) but that is my personal taste! Only a smidge of windowing and looks to me to perform well at pretty much all angles. Maybe lacking brightness head-on but they pretty much all seem to be like that, so I think it would need assessment in real life!

The first one is nice to my eyes :) although it does have a touch of windowing at the bottom of the short-end facets at tilt angles, which seems quite common!

Second one does have a lot of obstruction! but I think I agree that the lighting setup might not be perfect in both the JA and BN videos. JA EC stones always seem to lack brightness head-on, and they surely can't all be like that in real life...

It's Strongly objecting to sitting on the p2 facet.
Something with those particular angles that strongly interacts with it.
It took me a minute to figure out what was going on because it didn't make sense at first.

I saw the one with the flat crown and it is actually gorgeous! Does it make a difference that it doesn’t have a crown to it? I also like the other 1.20 H that has a crown. Thank you for your help.
Karl was kind enough to cover that off in a thread recently, talking about another diamond with a low crown, so I will quote him because he is much wiser than me! :)

A lowish crown can still be very bright but you lose a lot of the 3d effect from the side view and some life when moving it side to side.
That said a diamond with a lowish crown and matching angles will blow away a diamond with a high crown that the angles dont match very well.
Fire in some lighting can be less, it could be more that it doesn't show fire as often as not having great fire in the right lighting.
The diamond in question is a 66% table and the CH is probably around ~12% which is not super low but on the low side.
The windmills are not conventionally cut to save a little weight.
There is a limit to what I can say, but getting an ASET might be worth it.

It does... Yoram F. tells this story better than I:

- with a crown: WWW
&
- without: WWW

(both caree)

This is what everyone wants WWW

I'd say you may well like then flat-faced (since I do), but know what you are missing...

I had a thread about the same time as you started your thread called, "Thoughts on this emerald cut diamond". The thread is on page 4 and the last post will be most helpful for you.
@OoohShiny was kind enough to suggest several options in the final post. Hopefully you will find something available on that list. OoohShiny has an amazing eye for step cuts.

1 - I like it.

2 - I quite like it - potentially could be dark head-on as the obstruction patterns are quite strong, but the patterns are spread out.

3 - Looks good - potentially a touch 'quiet' at the bottom of the triangles at the short ends, meaning the central band is more dominant?

4 - Looks good - potentially a touch 'windowy' at the bottom of the triangles at the short ends at tilt angles, but seems to be a very lively stone.

All IMHO, of course!

Have you gotten the stone? Excited to hear what you think in real life. I hear fancy shapes are much harder to judge online and the eye test is still gold standard lol

Oooh, pretty! :appl: Have you decided on a setting?

I’m just getting a thin solitaire for now. I would love to do a custom setting with DK one day or put it in a three stone setting. I can’t wait to see it.

I haven’t received the stone yet. I should get it some time next week as I am having a basic solitaire made for it too. I’m excited to see and wear it. I saw one at my jewelers and it was divine. I was going to go back to my basic round but decided to take the leap and pray that I get a good Emerald from all the recommendations on here.
