Hello!

First time poster here...please bear with my onslaught of questions

I''m looking for some advice on finding a 3 stone Emerald Cut diamond ring. I''m looking to spend in the range of $4500-6500. Ideally, I''d like a 1.0-1.25 ct eye clean EC center stone. My gf has showed me various examples of ring styles she likes - she likes either white gold or platinum settings, but did not express any preference.

This is her favorite type of 3 stone setup

Here is a 3 stone setting on GoG that I really think she would like.

I have been looking at specs on ECs across various sites mentioned on the forums, but I really don''t know what the ideal proportions, table/depth info I should be focusing on. And being that EC diamonds don''t seem to be as popular as other cuts, I''m having a hard time trying to figure out how I should differentiate between diamond specs that I see.

I''m also trying to get this ring in my possession within the next 2-3 weeks, if possible, because I will have a really good opportunity to propose in the middle of this month.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. These forums have been a huge help so far.

TIA.

Hey there!

I think three stone EC rings are georgous! Here is a chart that will help you with the specs on a good EC: http://www.gemappraisers.com/oldcutgraderules.asp

Use the drop down menu and select Emerald.

I think the first link that you posted might be an EC in the middle with traps on the sides (a little hard to tell from the picture). Yummy!!

GOG is probably the go-to people for emeralds... just make a thread with "emerald" and "pictures."

I guess this could be a backup if you're at the one week mark and haven't made much progress, as it is in budget, has a center>1 ct, and is available quickly...

ETA: the Vatche is probably about 3K in white gold...and probably takes at least 2-3 weeks, so you may have to go with stock or modified stock settings.

Hi!

I purchased my emerald cut diamond from GOG and am very happy with it.

Here''s a handshot of it:

I would suggest contacting GOG and getting them to source the stones for you according to your budget. Everytime I''ve done this, they find wonderful stones for me! And given that the setting you like is on the GOG website, you''ll be able to get the entire ring from them too.

You know I should read posts more carefully-- I see that you had 3 weeks... I thought you had a week. If you have 3 weeks I would definitely contact GOG. I just didn''t see anything that fit your needs available immediately...but GOG can find some NICE emeralds-- and since they have your setting, I''d call them first.

*Sorry to thread-jack*

*Sorry too*.. nice paws... why don''t you meet me at my thread (one where i page Diamond expert) and we can chat!

Wow! That''s a fabulous deal. And you can either buy a diamond from GOG or Pearlmans.

Hi there,
I love emerald cuts! For your budget, I have another suggestion. I think that for what you want in a 3 stone, you will have a really hard time sticking to your budget.

I have another idea to throw out there. How about sinking the majority of your budget into an amazing single stone. You could surely get your 1-1.25 ct in a great cut for that price. Then spend just a few hundred on a white gold solitaire setting. That should not be more than $400 so the bulk of your money is on the center stone.

THEN for your one year or even 5 year anniversary have it reset in platinum with 2 more smaller emerald cuts making the 3 stone ring at that point.

I think you are far better getting a really really nice center stone that starts as a solitiare and then great side stones that match in a few years than getting a smaller center stone now.

Just a suggestion :)

Oh and that diamonds by lauren is a pretty looking ring in the photos but I would NOT go below a VS2 or an emerald cut. Step cuts show inclusions much easier than other cuts.

Thanks everybody for the great advice so far!

I''m just taking it all in at the moment.

I know my gf also likes other types of 3 stone settings with baguettes on the sides like this one, but I know her "favorite" is the 3 emerald (or even emerald with squarish baguettes on the side), so I think I''d rather go that route.

Regarding my self-imposed "deadline", it''s not an absolute necessity - if things take longer, no big deal. As far as the Vatche setting goes, would it be advisable to spend ~$3k on setting for a rock that will probably be in the ~$4k range (at least to stay somewhere near my budget
25.gif
). [I know that''s more of an open-ended "personal preference" question - just curious on your opinion.] Are there comparable "generic" settings that people tend to go with instead?

For example, if I went with the Facet setting that JulieN posted, how does that work? Would I have that shipped to wherever I buy the diamond (say GoG) in order to match a diamond to the sidestones on the setting? Or would I choose a diamond and have it sent to the Facet retailer for setting and then have it shipped to me?

I''ll have to make some time during work this week to call up GoG and try to get the ball rolling on this. Btw- very nice ring, jadeleaves!! And I don''t mind the thread-jacking at all.

Thanks again for all the input - it''s helping to make this slightly less overwhelming.

signed pieces seems to put out very well-made goods; Vatche is nice, but you are definitly paying for the designer/brand name.

GOG might be able to come up with a setting for you. If you go with the SP one, though, just send them the dimensions of the stone and they will make a setting to those dimensions. I don''t know how emeralds work, since they aren''t rectangles with those clipped corners? I''d probably just send them the Helium scan to be safe... SP sends the ring to GOG, and GOG sets it.

Don''t know where you''re going to find a 4K 1+ct emerald. Usually you need VS clarity to be clean. A 1 ct G VS1 is probably upwards of 6.5K...

Perusing around some more, I see Mondera sells a 3 stone emerald ring with a very simple setting:

I don''t see a sideshot, but I think a setting along those lines is probably more feasible for my budget. Thanks for the quick response JulieN!

Hi again!

Thanks for your kind words! I showed u my EC because I wanted you to have a look at what GOG found for me. I knew nothing about EC, and all I said to Jon/Tim at GOG was ''here''s my budget, find me one''
2.gif
and they found a beautiful stone for me! Took all the stress out of the search
9.gif
. Do give them a call, you''ll find that they''ll be happy to discuss diamonds with you all day (ok maybe not all day, but they are very enthusiastic and will spend as much time as they can spare with u) and find something awesome for u.

Good luck!

Ohh I forgot to ask - Is this going to be an e-ring? If so, have you thought ahead to the wedding band? I asked because the 3 stone EC settings doesn''t seem to allow a wedding band to sit flush with the e-ring, so you might have to take that into consideration. Will having a gap in between the e-ring and wedding band bug you (or your gf/fiancee)?

jadeleaves - yes, this is an e-ring. I haven''t honestly given too much thought to the wedding band, as I''m leaving the ball in her court for that. I don''t know what her preference is regarding whether there''s a gap there or not...It is something I''ll keep in the back of my mind, so thanks for the advice.

I have been in touch with Tim at GoG since I last posted. He suggested to go with something like this Ingwer setting:
TWP141__s.JPG

He is going to contact them as soon as they are back from vacation to see if its possible to get this ring done in my timeframe. He''s been looking for ECs for me in the meantime...

Here''s one he sent me today - what do you think? This would be towards the top end of my budget. I like the color/clarity specs - what''s your take on the proportions/girdle?

Shape: Emerald
Measurements: 6.43 x 4.95 x 3.37 mm
Weight: 1.02 ct

Depth: 68.1%
Table: 66%
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick
Culet: None

Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Clarity: VS1
Color: F
Flourescence: None

As always, thanks for the help.

I don''t know how your girlfriend feels about antique settings, but there''s a beautiful, complete 3-stone EC ring on antiqueengagementrings.com. The center stone is a bit smaller than you wanted, but it might be worth a look:

http://antiqueengagementrings.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=1057

I don''t know anything about cut on emeralds -- maybe some of the more knowledgable PS members could help on this one.

Oooh, F VS1, nice! I am also working with GOG to find a stone and I am totally confident in their selections. If they think the stone is worth calling in, then you can at least see a picture of it and get their opinion of it. The Ingwer setting looks fine if they can get it in time.

The 1 ct stones that GOG has right now aren''t suitable?

Do they have pics or anything? Depth is good. F VS1 is a great combo for a step cut (of course I''m biased). Girdle and proportions are very good. Table is a little big for me... but not too bad and it could be very nice-- it is smaller than the depth with is good. Pics??? Please?

Hello!

Ok is this going to be a surprise? Does she know you are looking to get a ring now? Because it might be an idea to get her to try on rings to see what she likes, and to see if having a gap in between the rings will bug her. It is better to do this now rather than get a ring and then find out having a gap between the e-ring and w-band bugs her, because it might be possible to find something now that would allow a wedding band to sit flush, otherwise you will have to go custom to get a wedding band that will sit flush with the 3-stone EC ring.

With regards to the EC specs - I can''t help you with that
2.gif
because I know nothing about ECs, which was why I got Jon/Tim to pick one for me. Hopefully others will chime in! Different people have difference preferences with regards to the length to width ratio - you have to look at what YOUR eyes prefer. Gd luck!

My advice on this is to take your time on getting the two together... and either purchase the setting and propose with that and allow her to choose her own diamonds... or choose just a center stone for her and propose with an unset stone. How classy would that be? ::swoon::

Hey, I want in on this chat! Where is it??

I don''t have pics of that particular stone yet, but I''ll ask for some.

The ring is going to be a surprise - she specifically does not want to go to a store and pick it out with me, but I do have a pretty clear idea of what she really likes the most.

I''ll keep you all updated...
