I received my e-ring and had an EGL certificate with it. I''m assumming it''s one from Israel b/c of the 10 digit certificate number. However, there''s a misspelling on the form (it was ''Graduate emologist'') and it doesn''t appear to have any security features. It was created in 2000, apparently.

Any advice on verifying this form? I''m hoping he hasn''t paid for something that''s not even close to being the real deal...

Thank you!

Hi

EGL is a real grading organization, but they are not (as I have found out through this site) well respected. The USA EGL seems to have a better reputaion and stricter standards, but I was told by a few jewelers to stay away from the Belgium and Isreal reports . This does not mean that you got a fake diamond or anything--just that what is on the report may not be accurate (they are known to grade up to two letters higher in colour, and higher in clarity as well), meaning you could have paid for a VS1, H stone (for ex.) but really got a VS2, J....

You may want to get it graded again by GIA or AGS, and if it is way off, look into returning it if that is important to you...

hope that helps, i am just learning this myself, so maybe others will chime in

Alternately, maybe the diamond has some documented, unique features, captured by the emologist.

LOL... the emologist definition is classic. Thanks for the laugh.

The misspelling is strange and a bit suspicious. Where did you purchase this diamond? Was it a reputable jeweler?

Regular guy that was FUNNY!

it came from an individual jeweler in houston. diamond world.

You could bring the stone back to the jeweler and voice your concern (don''t be shy!) point out the typo, and arm yourself with some knowledge from this site (just search EGL). Maybe your could ''trade-in'' your stone for one of approximate specs, but with a GIA report. You may have to dish out some extra $$, but it may be worth it for peace of mind.

You could always contact www.eglusa.com - they have a search function where you can verify the cert number. If this only works with EGL USA graded diamonds, they still might be able to help you by giving you info on who to contact to check out the cert.

I just had a look for you, go to online results on the website and you will see the search tool where you can enter the cert number. If this doesn't work for other EGL labs, there is a customer service number at the bottom of the page you could call and they would be able to tell you who to speak to.
