EC ASET/Ideal Scope Help, PLEASE!

I always caution people to not try to do TOO much with images. For the remote shopper a high quality image package is a godsend. Especially when they can be reviewed in collaboration with experts. However, images as compared to human vision, are limited in the information they can convey. And they can also convey information not present be seen in real life for a number of reasons. Not only are there staging and lighting variables, but also our brain processes visual inputs from our two eyes independently (binocular or "stereo" vision).

The tools we use to vet remote diamonds are best viewed as fine filters to allow us to focus on likely candidates that will hit the mark when viewed in person. The more complete image package you have available, the more confidence you can have in the selection. But no image or combination of images that I am aware of today is equivalent to viewing the diamond in person.

Excellent points! ^^^

With regard to staging, here is a variable worth noting when analyzing images or videos. If a diamond is laying directly on a surface, that surface is directly contacting one or more facets. This can serve to actually change the refractive property of that facet. This is especially true in the case of a hand shot, and especially true of diamond that has step cuts. The direct contact can act on individual facets in similar way that a buildup of film on the pavilion of the diamond can diminish it's overall light performance.

At 0:04, 0:09, & 0:13 timeline of the hand shot (2nd) video, I see the same left area stays “clear” almost all time! Is it because of leakage, especially on that left side, or because the hand wasn’t tilting enough? The right side looks more alive..., no?

I certainly understand that EC facets don't all light up at once, but I do want to check if certain ones are dull at all angles.

I am asking the consultant to double check it for me. Stay tuned!

The latest one on this page (below the pic with white background).
Actually, make that both vids. Maybe its me...*Gasp!*

@OoohShiny had problem with the 1st video at first too...sorry I don't know what's going on with the media attachment.

I kind of think Bryan addressed this. Any step cut sitting on a finger is going to show some skin at some angle. You need to see it in a stone holder on your hand so you see how it reacts as you move it around.

I think that if the consultant confirms no steps are always 'dead', the next step would be to have it shipped to you so you can assess it personally!

Thank you for the info! I recall comments previously on the forum about how JA's videos may suffer due to stones laying on their pavilion, so it makes sense!

Hand shots can over emphasize leakage a bit and touching the hand does have a small effect.
However the advantages are more realistic obstruction when shot at a distance more inline with someone actually viewing it.
Many photo set ups and ASET are centered on rounds and over obstruct the diamonds.
The video light boxes are as bad if not worse.
How many times has someone said "I cant get my arrows black like in the photo/video"

What I look for is play of light across the center of the stone and smaller sparkles on the ends, then I look at the areas that ASET point out might have issues and look for those areas flashing as well as overall patterns and brightness.
You also have to scale it, an area that looks huge on video may be less than the width of a human hair on the diamond.

The best videos from anyone are an indication not definitive. Combining them with other information and observations gives a better picture but viewing them in your own environment is the real test.
