We have a SmartSilk Comforter at our beach house and love it.

http://smartsilk.com/smartsilk_en/bed-linens/duvet-covers-pillow-shams/duvet-pillow-shams

We don't know what we have in our NY home (except we know it is down) as it was a long time ago that we bought it. I love it but cannot find any identifying info on it so starting from scratch and this is the one we are looking to replace since it is getting worn.

I would just get the Smart Silk Comforter (not down) for our NY home and call it a day except it is colder at the beach and the smart silk is a heavier and warmer comforter so I would appreciate recommendations for something as soft but lighter because I get warm in the NY home.

I would like something that would be light enough to keep me cool enough in summer and warm enough in winter. It is always warmer in the NY home than the beach home so the warmer Smart silk isn't a great option for us here I think.

I know this is a personal taste thing but appreciative to hear what you guys have and like (and why) for your comforter at home. Thanks.

I bought a beautiful duvet comforter from the Hotel Collection. I must tell you I hated it because the comforter inside always slid around (even though there were buttons and fasteners inside the duvet) and you could never keep the thing looking good on the bed. I got rid of it and went back to a Calvin Klein comforter and because it is one piece, I like it so much better. I also bought a blanket of sorts to put on the bed underneath it but seldom use it because it can get too hot. We keep the bedroom cooler than the rest of the house as we don't like sleeping in a hot room. Two people sleeping together seem to generate more heat than you think so while it might be chilly getting in, we seem to warm up nicely!

Thanks MGR. Same problem here. Our comforter in NY slides around under the duvet cover despite being fastened with buttons to stay in place. My dh has attached it with big safety pins at the edges too now to keep it firmly in place. I hate it when the padding is unequal throughout the comforter.

We keep the bedroom as cool as we can (I cannot sleep in a too warm room) but I have some blood circulation issues that has started causing serious problems recently so I cannot keep it as cold as I like to anymore. Always dealing with weird challenges lol.

Will check out the Calvin Klein comforters. Thanks.

I found that they were well made and seemed to hold up and look good on the bed. I am sure there are other brands and types that do that as well if not better but those always seem to be my go to brand. I like their soft, soothing patterns and fabric choices.

LL Bean has a great selection of duvets. I’ve bought two from them before and have been very happy with them.

For covers, I’ve been a die-hard Pottery Barn fan for twenty years now. Their duvet covers, quilts, etc are always top quality and hold up very well.

I have different weight comforters from The Company Store. I’ve transitioned away from down (I don’t like the inevitable dust and escaped clusters) and silk (heavy) and now have all down-alternative comforters, which The Company Store also carry. You can choose different grades and weight based on how much warmth you want.

Pacific coast down if you are cool with down feathers, and I think they also carry down alternative

I wouldn't be able to use the same duvet year-round as it would feel too hot for me in the summer so I use a cotton blanket and layer it with lightweight fleece blanket if it's not enough warmth. I find that thin fleece is very light but gives just enough warmth. For the winter, I switch to a down duvet.

Thank you MissGotRocks, ILikeShiny, t-c, whitewave, baby monster and redwood. I appreciate your suggestions and will look into each of them.
Happy holidays!

In Australia everyone calls the part that goes inside a "Doona" and the outside part a "Doona cover" - I kid you not.... and not it's not an Aboriginal word it's Norse for the word "Dunn" meaning originally feather down insert. But it was popularised by IKEA from the 70s onwards and the name stuck here.... no one uses Duvet any more.

If you have an IKEA by you it's worth a trip to check out their comforters. They provide warmth ratings to their comforters and offer a variety of fill options. I have a summer and a winter comforter I switch around that have a synthetic fill. I was honestly afraid of my cats being interested in the down lolol which is why I opted for synthetic. I also have a few of ikeas duvet covers.

If I ever have guests over, i have a formal/pretty quilt to throw over my comforter.

Thanks Arkieb and PintoBean. Ikea is a great idea.

Arkieb lol perhaps no one here uses the word Duvet anymore either. Remember I am old and don't keep up with the terms the kids are using these days and could be totally wrong with using the word duvet. I am a dinosaur that way and it is the word I always used in the "olden days" so perhaps it isn't the word used here anymore either and not just Australia...

In the city we have an "aus vio" silk comforter and duvet. The come in different weights, and for the city we have their summer weight. Very light in terms of weight and a good insulator. Keeps us cool in the summer and warm in the winter. We almost never turn on the heat during the winter, but do use the ac during the summer.

Same here, except we only get the Light Primaloft from The Company Store, and we find it to be sufficient for all seasons, with AC on in summer. http://www.thecompanystore.com/lacrosse-tcs-down-primaloft-deluxe-comforter/c3f3-ps-g17.html#start=1 They come in great colors too.

I've tried the ikea comforters, and found even the lightest one not to breathe enough for me, sadly, because I LOVE ikea!

Am I the only nerd who still buys inexpensive polyfilled comforters? I use mine year-round. Ditto for the kids. I like them because they are lightweight and be laundered if needed. I do put mine in a duvet cover that coordinates better with the rest of the bedroom.

Thanks for the additional replies rocks, Loves Vintage, anne_h, and sox fan.

Yesterday my dh was shopping at Costco and he called me to tell me Costco had a new comforter (that wasn't in their stores last week because we checked) and if he should get it so I said yes. So I will keep you posted. The price was right at $99 for a King and well, Costco does get some excellent products. With a great return policy so no risk there.

We didn't try it yet but I will update the thread when we do and in the meantime keeping all your wonderful suggestions in mind so if this one doesn't work out well I will explore your recommendations.

Thank you all for your help!

Just got that from Costco! Thanks Whitewave. I am excited and hope it works well for us. Thanks for your suggestion!

Cool! I'll have to check ou Costco in New Orleans. I have only been to one in California. I hope you like it! I slept in a Hilton once and the pillows were so comfortable that I took the cases off to see what the brand was. Then I called PCD to see which one it was and I have only used their products since then,..

We washed and used the new comforter last night and it was good! So far we are happy. It is very soft and very comfortable.
And found out the comforter we are replacing is from the Company Store. I just don't know which one it is from the Company Store. Love that one too just getting flatter since it is so old (haha just like some of us are too or at least I am LOL).

I am at the point I am seriously considering replacing my down comforter. I have one from TCS, but it is so worn it has a ton of little holes in the fabric that are leaking down, especially along one edge. I LOVE TCS, but it looks like they are running about twice what I would pay for one at Costco.

@missy @partgypsy The Company Store has a lifetime guarantee against quality issues including down leaking or popped stitches. You should see if your comforters are covered.

Hi t-c, thank you! Oh I wish I knew exactly which TCS comforter we have...it's from 2004 so I really have no clue. Darn. I do love it. I told my dh not to toss it though we are using the Pacific Coast comforter right now. I will do some sleuthing...thanks t-c!

partgypsy see if you can get The Company Store to replace yours with a new one or fix it as per t-c's helpful post.
If not I recommend Pacific Coast (carried at Costco right now at least but might not be there after this holiday season) because so far I am loving this too. Very soft and comfortable and just the right thickness for us. And the price point is sweet too!

Hi whitewave (sorry for the slight thread jack missy)
I'm on the hunt for down pillows. Is there one from PCD that you can recommend? Ones I'm looking at from Garnet Hill are $300.00...

If you have a Costco membership they are also selling pacific coast pillows. Maybe order different pillow densities and return the ones you don't want.

Thank you so much for the reminder about lifetime guarantee! Talked to a TCS rep and my comforter is covered. Going to mail back and see what happens.
