Does this sound alright for an e-ring?

Hey guys,

my bf and I are ''looking'' at rings seriously/not seriously but just getting an idea? anyway we were in diamonds international today and saw a 18k white gold ring with a princess cut .54 diamond F/VS1 and also had fourteen sholder stones totaling .30.

It was originally $7980 but they are doning a sale at the moment for $4788.

Is this way over priced, or just ok? i really think its beautiful, and have already offered to pay half (i dont think he should have to pay for it all) but he doesnt want to hear it. I just dont want to get ripped off.

Thanks
Cass

If they can cut the price back like that, you can bet that the piece was way overpriced to begin with. Plus, with the info you gave, there is no way of knowing what quality of cut the diamond has. Here are some examples from GoodOldGold to show what you could pay for a diamond that has ideal cut, which is the most important quality regarding diamond perfornance.

Here is a 0.513 ct. F/SI1 princess that has an AGS ideal rating for $1542.

Here is a 0.72 ct. G/VS2 princess, also AGS ideal for $3344.

Plus these diamonds have lifetime guarantees so that you can always trade up for a larger diamond if you desire. For $4788 you could probably get a quite a nice mounting along with the diamond. Hope that helps! Also, there is nothing wrong with pitching in to help with a diamond/ring so that you can get something that you'll really like and enjoy wearing. I always did!

Oh by the way, thats also in Australian prices.

I didnt see any problem in going in together, good thing is a spoke to him about it and he like the idea of 2/3 (him) 1/3 (me) as we are also saving for a house deposit.

cass, I know how it is. So many things to save for! I don''t know how the AUSD compares to US pricing, but I know that several Aussie posters have bought from GoodOldGold and other of the Pricescope vendors. Good luck in your ring hunt! And yeah about going together for it!

Hi Just_Cass,

I am living in Australia. In my personal opinion, I thought the ring was a bit expensive. You may disagree. A F/VS1 excellent princess cut diamond costs about A$2000, white gold setting about A$1500 and a 0.33ct princess cut diamond around $800, assuming Excellent cut for these stones. Total = $4300 (including gst). Not to forget that a 0.33 princess cut stone is more expensive than 14 stones with tcw of 0.30ct. Perhaps you can buy it for less than $4300. Shopping around may help.

I have visited a store in Sydney last week and was amazed at the level of markup. A 1 carat RBC ring with M colour and I2 clarity is selling for $8000. Looking at some of the Australian online diamond database, one can get the ring for around $2800.

^ wow what a mark up on price, i''ve seen a way better quality diamond same size for less! the only thing is, i love the setting! and i have seen anything else exactly the same, it just suits me perfectly! Someone suggested that we attempt to talk them down on the sale price, which could never hurt!

But now i think i have my heart set on it, and given that i will be paying for 1/3 and my partner is fine with paying the AU$3200, all i think im doing now is justifying the ring...

Hi Cass,

Just a suggestion.

I saw in your other thread that you would like to visit a B&M store. Would you like to try Varoujan Jewellers? It is located in between Chanel and Bvlgari on Castlereagh Street, Sydney. I have bought a ring from this jeweller but the ring isn''t ready yet.

So far, the buying experience is excellent. The owner has been very patient to discuss the design and stone selection. The price seems comparable to WF, James Allen and GOG.

You may want to give it a go.

Fellow Aussie here

Let''s face it Cass, all that really matters is that you love the ring. Granted, you would most likely get a better deal through the awesome vendors on this site, but hey, if you have your heart set on it and can afford it...! You sound like you adore it already. And don''t hesitate to knock them down on the price, you can only try! Better in you pocket than theirs!
