Do you think this diamond is set too high?

When the ring is not on my finger I feel the setting is a high setting, but when it’s in my finger it looks about right to my eyes. What do you think? I have 7.5size chubby finger with no knuckles.

I did ask for the diamond to be set in a way that I can see the culet. Maybe that’s why when I turn the ring on the side I see the gaps between the prong? But when I look at the prong directly I don’t see the gap.

It is a tall style head and the diamond looks to be appropriate height in the head. If you end up feeling it is too high for you, you can have the head replaced with a shorter style head. Some people like short, some people like tall. Either is the right style for you if that is the style you like.

Your stone is set very well. The "gaps" you're seeing are normal - prongs won't hug the stone all the way up the pavilion, but the prong seats that the diamond girdle sits in should be flush with the crown and pavilion of the stone.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my concern. The one thing it might be a problem is that if I change a shorter head, the part between the shoulders of the ring( where is head is placed) and this style it might not fit the new head. If they make the bottom of the head shorter, then the head won’t fit?

Maybe it is just the style of this ring? Am I making any sense here? Or there is other ways they can work around it?

Thanks for clarifying. I do see where the other poster’s concern is now. I would be too.

Even this ring looks like it’s set very well, it became loose within 6 months with minimal wear. I had to fix it, not sure if it was cause by my request to be able to see the culet that cause it, but I think it should not be.

Even if you want the culet visible, the head does not need to be this tall. There is a nontrivial depth of unnecessary metal underneath the culet - base of prongs plus band.

Oh that is a pretty ring!

I think in my case I might need to change the whole ring instead of just the head, because the space between the shoulders on this ring might not be wide enough for the diamond width?

Comes down to what @Wink said, really - what’s your preference?

If your goal is to reduce total height, one options I see is to alter the basket style to something more delicate and less bottom-heavy. Your jeweller can tell you what your options on this front are.


Or, if you prefer your current head style, you could speak with your jeweller about cutting the band and inserting a new head to the excess depth that the band adds. This may or may not be feasible.

I think your ring is very lovely & I don’t think it’s too high. My solitaire is extremely high (custom made to sit over my original chunky eternity ring without the claws chewing into each other) & whilst I do bash it now & again, it doesn’t bother me & I love the way it looks. I can also see the culet. My eternity ring has since been reset to a smooth, low channel, but I wouldn’t change my pear setting.

As @Wink says, it’s just personal preference & taste. Whatever you decide to do, I hope you love it as it’s gorgeous!

I am gonna leave it as it is. I have to admit that it bang into things more easy compared to my other rings. but I do like this style.

It’s a fairly new ring, maybe down the road when it’s worn then I will change it.

It is just like Wink said ... personal preference ... and so this is yet another thing that only you can decide. I understand asking for other opinions, but yours is the only one that counts.

Here’s my opinion anyway, lol ... my initial reaction was just to say yes it’s set too high (because of my own preference) BUT when I see the ring on your hand? I think it looks perfect on you! For some reason, it does not look as high on your hand as off, and I think it’s absolutely lovely! And they say setting the diamond higher makes it look bigger, aaaand, it was your initial preference, yes? I think you have winner!

It could be that you bumped the ring a bit more because of the height, and maybe this is what loosened the stone, but time will tell whether this is an ongoing problem for you.

I’m glad you decided to keep the ring as is and I hope you enjoy it for many happy years! It’s beautiful! Congrats!

The ring looks just right when you're wearing it, therefore I'd keep it the way it is. It's beautiful. I've found that rings can start to look odd if we stare at them too much off the finger. Somehow it's easier to find "flaws". My halos start to look like little sloped sparkly flying saucers when I do this and they seem very weird. When I put the rings back on my finger it's all good again.
