Do pears and ovals sparkle?

I've mostly H&A rounds so I'm used to great light performance. I've an asscher, pre-PS and more like emerald to me, that doesn't sparkle. All these recent pears and ovals in SMTB has me interested in these shapes but I'm worried I'd be disappointed by the lack of light performance like how I feel with my asscher/emerald. How do pears and ovals compare in light performance to H&A rounds generally? Thanks.

I'd go and see for yourself. They have pears in pendants, if not rings. And ovals... well, you can call and see if they have any. If they ask you for an appointment, make one. And when they ask you why you are shopping just say that you want a new ring and are exploring different shapes to see what you like best.



I would say yes, they definitely do.

I find that kinda odd because to me well cut Asschers and Emerald Cuts definitely sparkle. They just have a different type of scintillation pattern ie big bold flashes rather than fine fire that other cuts particularly round brilliants have.

Pears and Ovals have a different type of flash and fire pattern to Asschers and Emeralds that is true. If you are looking for that fine pattern of high scintillation I would say go for a round brilliant, then an Oval next, then a pear..... if you like square shapes but like the amount and type of fire/sparkle that round brilliants have try some of the customs cuts from Good Old Gold.

Great advise to not only go and look at a heap of different cuts but try a few on as well, they look different through a window to on the hand.... Some modern cushions with that crushed ice effect and radiants which you might not have considered can have a disco ball wild amount of fine pin flash sparkle as well.

It could be the cut quality and the clarity impacting on the fire and sparkle not just the type of cut. Still helps to go and try on a heap of things (it's fun too!!!) because it can help you work out what your eye likes and what looks good on you.

i had a pear as my first go round for an e ring. It was bezeled, and the sparkle was disappointing. However, i think that was a combination of poor cut and bezeling. I told it and got a round as i needed my e ring to be as much sparkle as I could get.

But I still love fancy shapes, so i bought a marquise as a RHR. it does sparkle as it is a well cut one, but to a less degree and in a pin point kind of way, not as "flashy" as a pear, just sort of glittery.

A well cut one will sparkle, but the best cut one ever just wont be the same as a round. But, for me at least, there is a place in my jewelry box for both. My e ring i needed to be a super performer, but my RHR i wanted something unique and interesting. And a round just isnt as interesting as other shapes. Both have their pros and cons, and i dont think you would be disappointed if you got both, as i think they offer their own charm

My emerald cut sparkles and flashes. Pre-PS, I bought one and it behaved like a piece of glass. It did nothing at all. After the first upgrade, it sparkled some and I thought it looked nice. PS then helped me with the next upgrade and I bought it with their help and using ASET and video. The difference is astounding - it is a busy EC, always either twinkling or the bars lighting up. It is all in the cut. Because I bought pre-PS, there was no true upgrade policy so I traded my original EC in at a slight loss but it was well worth it to get a better cut stone.

That said, even when looking at the best cut diamond of every shape, their sparkle will look different, meaning some are pinpoint, some are flashes and some are a combination of the two.

Depends if you like it or don't like it, you could try selling it in preloved or on Diamond Bistro or Looptroupe if you really want to replace it or keep it and buy a totally different cut and appreciate both for what they are. Maybe you could buy something else and also eventually put a halo around your original stone or some side stones or something else to jazz it up a bit if it still bothers you, or repurpose it and put it into a pendant or bracelet or something else.

I unmounted the asscher and reused the setting instead. With its cut, I'll take a steep loss, so no point selling. I'll just keep it till I can decide what to do with it.

Mine is flat, unlike the liquid silvery look of the asschers seen on PS.

A good pear yes that will have pinpoint sparkle, possibly mixed with broader flashes, as often times the facets are bigger around the fat end.

That sounds interesting - the fat end flashing broader sparkles like a round while the thin end flashing pin point sparkles. thanks for the info. I'll go and see them at Tiffany for myself but sometimes the SAs there are unfriendly so I'm not sure I can really observe for long.

While you are there, take another look at asschers and other step cuts; it sounds like you have one that isn't cut well.

I agree with arkie... Rounds are my all time fave, but I just adore a well-cut chubby oval or even a marquise (ah-hem... NIEL!!)

They do, but not as much as round brilliants. If you want maximum sparkle, you might be disappointed.

As with all shapes, well-cut ones sparkle more than poorly-cut examples.

Anyone who thinks step cuts can't sparkle well has not see an Octavia, which gives even round ACAs and Solasferas a challenge.

OP. I hope you do take a good look at marquise too, as they offer elements from both an oval and a pear. And are extremely unique.

I have both a round (well, 3 of them!) and an oval...all old cuts, so maybe a different kettle of fish. But, fwiw, they both sparkle, but differently. Honestly, I couldn't pick one over the other, so all things being equal, I'd go for the oval since they do tend to appear larger than rounds of the same carat weight.

Mine is a cushion brilliant according to GIA, but it really is an old cushion from around 1910.

I don't know about pears not sparkling. I saw a really lovely J/SI1 from Ritani last night. Maybe ever so slightly more bowtie than I'd like but it was really minimal and the stone was lovely, a good size (almost 8x6) and a nice price (less than $3k). I seriously considered buying it for myself.

My fiancé has an oval center with pear sides and we both feel it sparkles a lot. Lots of little pin point flashes and a few big ones. It lights up the ceiling of her car on a sunny day. She's even learned how to "aim" her ring and blind me...
