Hey guys,
I''m totally new to this whole process. I love the asscher and cushion cuts. I originally thought that I wanted asscher cut, but then I keep reading on here about how none of them look as big as the cut of carat sounds. Is this the same issue with cushion cut diamonds?? If yes, then which would appear larger?? It seems that hardly any stores carry asscher when you go in.
Thanks

depending on the cut of a cushion, they usually face up smaller, like an asscher. if you are wanting size more than shape there are other shapes that do a much better job. rounds of course as wear as pears, marquises and ovals. you are right, not a lot of local stores have them. most of the folks around here buy their asschers from Goodoldgold and Mark T of www.engagmentringsdirect. come is the go to guy for cushions. both shapes need expert eyes really to know if they are winners. Goodoldgold has amazing pics of their stones on your site so you can get a pretty good idea of what you are getting. good luck!

Hi there,

my first stone was an asscher, and I ended up trading it for a round because it always bugged me that they faced up so much smaller. For example, my 2.25 ct asscher faced up the same size as a 1.3 carat round.

"squarish" cushions will face up smaller like asschers, but the "elongated" cushion (looks more oval than square) faces up quite well, and shouldn''t be disappointing.

If I were you, I would go with an elongated cushion over an asscher if you''re worried about how big the stone will look.

When we were ring shopping, I was SHOCKED when I saw how much bigger an oval looked compared to ECs and rounds of the same ctw. I agree that when the stone is elongated (and rounded), it will look bigger.

If you like a sparkly cut, a rectangular radiant could be something you want to look at - it has a ton of facets and a squared off shape. Or, if you like the step cuts of an asscher, you might look for emerald cuts.

I was torn between asscher, cushion, and radiant cuts. But in the end I fell in love with the steps of the asscher cut and chose that over how big the stone looks. I do have to say that it does look smaller than other shapes but if you look from an angle, you can see that it''s a deeper ring. If you''re concerned about how big the stone looks on you, I would go for radiant or cushion. They also sparkle alot more than asschers.
Good thing I already have a round e-ring from a previous engagement

My BF found this awhile ago when we started looking for info. on diamonds since we were both clueless. I know now from lurking for a while that the following diagram is not accurate because of ratios, different lengths/widths/depths but it should kind of give you a rough estimate to compare different shapes and how they should compare face up with each other.

As kooky as it sounds at the least you can cut out the paper shape that most resembles the stone you''re looking at online with its l/w measurements in mm and stick it on your finger to see how it may look in general!

Not that I''ve done that myself!
