diamond size and large finger struggles

I know this is more a personal opinion.... but I used to to think size was the most important thing for a diamond but through my search I realized cut is king so i wanted a ACA then color became important to me as well since i easily was able to spot color differences. My budget is 13k to 14k so..I realize I cant get it all Lol i’m looking at stones around 1.36 carat (7.11mm) how much of a visual difference is it to a 1.5 carat (7.35mm) ? also, have a size 9.5 finger size and I’m afraid the diamond will look small on my finger?

Virtually indistinguishable... I'd go 1.36 and save money for a halo setting to give more finger coverage. An air-line halo will add even more!

I would second a setting that can provide better finger coverage, like a diamond halo.

Air gap halo is even better IMHO, that's what I opted for when I decided to reset my EC from a bezel solitaire to an air gap halo for my right hand middle finger, which is about size US 10.

I agree with the ladies, a setting might make all the difference & be cheaper in the long run. Another option is a 3 stone if that interests you. The sides might cost you but I think a 4mm would look like an accent to the centre stone & maximizing width.

This is a setting with an airline. Its just a gap between the diamond and the halo.

Also, you can ask WF for a picture or video of these two sizes of stones side-by-side (if they have both).

Another type with an airline

OP, I meant this type of airline halo (above). It is intentional and interesting. The other photo shown looked like a stock setting that didn't fit the stone (stone was too small, so there was an airline in between the stone and halo). I don't like an airline with a pronged setting for that reason. A bezel will add a little area, then the airline between the bezel and halo will add more, with the halo adding the majority of real estate. These are so beautiful and different.

What I meant in my post is that buying from either WF or HPD/CBI is great because both offer a generous upgrade policy. In case we decide down the road that we should have gone with different specs on a diamond, we always have the choice to upgrade, by just spending $1 or more, and get something different. That really takes the stress off!

i dont think there is going to be much visual difference between 1.36 and 1.5. personally i would go for: cut > carat > clarity > color. but if you go for aca, rest assured that you will get something brilliant!!

I have a big finger, too - 9.75. I originally bought a stone and had it set in a cheap solitaire with the intention of resetting it. My 10th anniversary was this year and I’m finally getting it done.

My experience with a solitaire was it looked small on my hand. There’s just a lot of finger on either side of the stone. (Also, same thing with wedding bands - I had mine made with more stones to make sure it actually covered half of the band.) My stone was pretty but always looked underwhelming because it was just a stone in the middle of a lot of finger.

I would suggest to consider a setting that gives you lots of horizontal coverage because that is my experience of what looks “big” on my hand. @KB0708 ’s photo above is a great example - her trillions give her awesome coverage width-wise. I added sidestones to get width-wise coverage, too, and I’m so much happier with my original stone because it is anchored on my hand rather than floating alone in the middle, if that makes sense?

Here’s a picture I kept if a side detail I really liked. I wish I had kept the pic of the whole ring now as I don’t recall what site I found it. You wouldn’t need to do a half halo either. I’d set the centre stone in the same style faux bezel like the sides. Will give you size without spending more on a half halo (labour & stones). I love halo’s & vintage styles so I’d work that in if I could. Lol.

Great suggestions, but I think that ring will be beautiful on your 9.5 hand even if you do nothing. It's a good-sized diamond and you can't go wrong.
