Economist backs Obama link

Well, McCain still has Al Queda and Joe the plumber.

IT IS impossible to forecast how important any presidency will be. Back in 2000 America stood tall as the undisputed superpower, at peace with a generally admiring world. The main argument was over what to do with the federal government’s huge budget surplus. Nobody foresaw the seismic events of the next eight years. When Americans go to the polls next week the mood will be very different. The United States is unhappy, divided and foundering both at home and abroad. Its self-belief and values are under attack.

For all the shortcomings of the campaign, both John McCain and Barack Obama offer hope of national redemption. Now America has to choose between them. The Economist does not have a vote, but if it did, it would cast it for Mr Obama. We do so wholeheartedly: the Democratic candidate has clearly shown that he offers the better chance of restoring America’s self-confidence. But we acknowledge it is a gamble. Given Mr Obama’s inexperience, the lack of clarity about some of his beliefs and the prospect of a stridently Democratic Congress, voting for him is a risk. Yet it is one America should take, given the steep road ahead.....
That was extremely balanced.

I just wanted to tell everyone that I just got back to my office from a Joe Biden rally at the University of Delaware! Biden is a UDel alum, as is his wife, who was also there. I am SO EXCITED that I got to see the next Vice President of the United States of America speak in person.

I am also super stoked that I will be voting in one of the most important battleground states- Pennsylvania.

I did follow through and sign up for 6 hours of going to the homes of known Obama supporters to make sure everyone gets out to vote on Tuesday.

OMG I am so over the election. Anyone else the same way? I just can''t even think about it. If Obama doesn''t win I think I''ll just die. I''m trying to just not think about it so I don''t freak out! ACK!

Hahahaha thing....it's a good thing I am dressed as Morticia right now....I have a thing for things.
3.gif

I hear ya cluckin' big chicken....I will be soooooooooo glad when this is over. This of course, assumes it will be over on Nov. 4th. I recall how long we went in 2000 while "Unprecedented". Let's hope that doesn't happen this year.

ETA: Ahahahahaha, Obama said that McCain was going as Bush this Halloween.....Whew...that is too funny!!

I know, I know! I''m trying but I am just done! Although I did just come across something I must post!

I guess I''ll post here since no one plays in the other threads I''ve posted lately! I think I''m not the only one sick of this election! This is a bit of a shocker and maybe deserves its own thread:

Palin: First Amendment Rights Threatened By Criticism

"Palin told WMAL-AM that her criticism of Obama''s associations, like those with 1960s radical Bill Ayers and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, should not be considered negative attacks. Rather, for reporters or columnists to suggest that it is going negative may constitute an attack that threatens a candidate''s free speech rights under the Constitution, Palin said."

SNIP

"Salon''s Glenn Greenwald explains why this argument is frighteningly wrong:

If anything, Palin has this exactly backwards, since one thing that the First Amendment does actually guarantee is a free press. Thus, when the press criticizes a political candidate and a Governor such as Palin, that is a classic example of First Amendment rights being exercised, not abridged.

This isn''t only about profound ignorance regarding our basic liberties, though it is obviously that. Palin here is also giving voice here to the standard right-wing grievance instinct: that it''s inherently unfair when they''re criticized. And now, apparently, it''s even unconstitutional."

Nothing she says could shock me now! Did you see Rachel Maddow tonight ... there was some top Republican (can''t remember who now -- there were three) that said of McCain''s choice:

"Even at McDonalds you have to have three interviews to get hired" ... HA! Since McCain apparently only met Palin once before choosing her. And OBVS she wasn''t vetted effectively. They also showed McCain making a funny face when (supposedly) pondering the thought of Palin as President. LMAO!

I am not surprised at her level of "class". In fact the whole political campaign strategy from GOP this year is frightening. I heard on the radio that 1 out of every 3 Texans believe that Obama IS Muslim, thanks to the robo calls GOP put out for months in that state. I just don't know who to feel sorry for more, the residents in Texas or the GOP.

Hahaha! Did you see this? Former Republican Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger actually laughed at the idea of Palin being ready for the VP office! OUCH.

"Asked by the host whether Palin could step in during a time of crisis, Eagleburger reverted to sarcasm before leveling the harsh blow.

"It is a very good question," he said, pausing a few seconds, then adding with a chuckle: "I''m being facetious here. Look, of course not."

Eagleburger explained: "I don''t think at the moment she is prepared to take over the reins of the presidency. I can name for you any number of other vice presidents who were not particularly up to it either. So the question, I think, is can she learn and would she be tough enough under the circumstances if she were asked to become president, heaven forbid that that ever takes place?

"Give her some time in the office and I think the answer would be, she will be [pause] adequate. I can''t say that she would be a genius in the job. But I think she would be enough to get us through a four year... well I hope not... get us through whatever period of time was necessary. And I devoutly hope that it would never be tested."

OK, guys, I have a question. I''ve seen that some people think the ad referenced above is ''sexist.'' And if there''s anything I hate, it''s ''ism'' of any kind . . . sexism, racism, etc. However, I just don''t see the sexism in that ad! From my interpretation of it, it looks like Obama is simply stating his (very valid) concerns that Palin is not someone McCain should be relying on to help him deal with the economy. He could have just as easily said that if Palin were a man. How was the ad sexist? Can someone please enlighten me?
33.gif
That''s exactly what I see too. If he had a man running with him that had the same level of knowledge (or lack thereof) that SP does, it would be no different. I think that''s a stretch thinking that.

aj, I saw that too. As I said before, McCain can''t seem to catch a break. I really feel kinda sorry for him.... (but I did giggle)
9.gif

btw, what''s ''arvo''?
El, I''m glad you agree! I was worried that maybe I was being insensitive to sexism and, as a woman, I was concerned about myself! LOL!
9.gif

And the thing with Joe the Plumber standing McCain up is just HILARIOUS!!! It''s a good thing McCain was able to turn to all those other ''Joe the Plumbers'' in the absence of the ''real'' (ha!) Joe the Plumber! LOL!
2.gif
3.gif

And I''m glad Ellen asked what an ''arvo'' is, AJ . . . I didn''t have a clue either!
37.gif
Oh my, you guys crack me up - I just saw this.

Arvo = Afternoon!

I tend to forget that the rest of the world doesn''t truncate every single phrase, lol..

I will have an extremely difficult time crawling out of bed the next day if Obama does not win. And I could care less if anyone wants to throw that back in my face. I really fear that if McCain is elected, I''m going to have much bigger problems than someone making fun of me on Pricescope . . .

That said, I will say the same thing that I say after every election. If I don''t win, I hope that I am proven wrong and that the other candidate proves to be the best for the country.

Well said MaggieB. Regardless of who wins this Presidential election, I hope for the sake of Americans, as well as humanity, that the winner doesn''t "screw the pooch" as they said in in "The Right Stuff". I love that movie....

Oh my goodness, Thing... I couldn''t agree more.

I have been immersed in this election since Dec. 2004... back when they thought Evan Bayh was a likely contender for the Dem nominee!
23.gif
20.gif
I have lived every single press conference, every single day of news stories... it makes me feel a little bit nauseous to think about how much time I have spent studying politics.

IT NEEDS TO BE OVER. But it being over isn''t going to help me one bit if McCain is elected, so I''m rather glad we''ve got a couple more days.
2.gif

Mostly, though, I''m just scared. Scared that no matter what happens in the election that this country has gone too far down to manage a recovery in as short as 8 not to mention 4 short years. That''s a lot to ask of any person, and a president is just that- one person who has to contend with two much larger legislative bodies that won''t always agree. I''m not sure that peoples'' perception of what is possible in a short timeframe is accurate, and I think we''ll see a lot of undue criticism of the next president as a result.

I''m enjoying this election. I''m enjoying the intensity and level of interest. Being the Pollyanna that I am, I''m hoping that this election will be the beginning of a generally more involved, interested, and (eventually) better educated electorate. I know that not everyone who has suddently "found election" is well versed in the issues, but something tells me this could be a political coming-of-age for a lot of Americans.

I''m not liking the polarization that seems especially bad in this election (or is that just a memory problem?) We don''t discuss the election at all at work, except in hushed tones or when co-workers get together away from work. It seems like the stakes are so high this time, and the divides so deep, that we''re all being extremely careful to leave that grenade outside of the office.

I''ve really enjoyed this election too (although it helps that Obama seems to be winning). David Broder has an article in the Washington Post saying that this is the best race he''s ever covered, only Kennedy-Nixon coming close. I really enjoyed watching Hillary and Obama battling it out to the very end and seeing who would triumph. I was also looking forward to McCain''s campaign but was disappointed that the McCain from 2000 was a no show.

Now that you''ve perfected the art of one-liners, Dancing Fire, you should try having them make sense! Then, after you make sense, you should work on making them funny! That''s really the ultimate goal of one-liners.
