Decision Making Help - Oval Diamond

I love elongated oval shapes so have been looking at over 1.5:1 Ratios.

I just put an order in on this diamond:
https://www.adiamor.com/Diamonds/0.80-ct-E-VS2-Excellent-Cut-Oval-Diamond/D43913269 (video might still be available here: https://www.brilliantearth.com/loose-diamonds/view_detail/8392699/)

But then this one caught my eye as well for almost the same price:
https://www.adiamor.com/Diamonds/0.80-ct-D-VVS1-Excellent-Cut-Oval-Diamond/D43940915?q=43940915 / https://www.brilliantearth.com/loose-diamonds/view_detail/8375104/

Specs aside, looking at the images/videos is there a reason I should keep or change my order to this new diamond? I am the WORST at decision making so any insights are appreciated :)

Thanks!

You've listed two stones here. Can you relist the one that caught your eye?

I can’t get the adiamore videos to work on my phone. But who are you buying it through? If BE, please do yourself a favor and read my review in testimonials

That sounds like a terrible experience, sorry you went through that. I ordered through Adiamore (just yesterday so a while yet before it ships to me) but the video is offline.

I was able to download the video here: https://upload-video.net/a2105OgF910

I would appreciate any insights or feedback on this particular diamond! There appears to have lots of great knowledge within this community and I definitely don't bring the same eye or understanding!

Here is a larger video as weill with more angles: https://upload-video.net/a2105VXQl10

Should I be concerned some sections look less defined/more crushed ice? Will this ring fire? https://upload-video.net/a2105VXQl10

If not this ring, any recommendations for a stone > 1.54 L/W Ratio and Under 3k USD, and F or better colour (and preferable over 7.8/7.9mm long if I can be picky :D!)

Let me start with this...the E from Adimore is better than the D.

Now is the E a good stone? Its good/ok/typical. The problem is that you want a long stone and long stones with higher ratios usually dont have
as good light return as shorter fatter stones.

Let me show you what kind of stone has good light return for a traditional oval. Pay attention to the center of the stone. When the stone tilts you
want more distinct facets (not blurry or gray) to light up.

https://www.bluenile.com/diamond-de...NDS&track=viewDiamondDetails&catalogView=true

This is a stone that is typical. It is an 8 main offset that has good light return between the 2 arrows but not so good outside of them

The stones you have picked are 8 main offset.

If you want an 8 main offset you need to maximize the area of nice light return between the two arrows.
Wide apart arrows with wide area of good light return...

Vs this stone with a smaller area of good light return in the center.

I have to run to the store but I can look around a little when I get back to see what I can find.

Tyty333 - so helpful! Thanks for the excellent information - really very well explained and helpful. You're right, however, finding that ideal wide-arrow centre is harder in the longer stones but I enjoy a good hunt! Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!

I received the diamond today. Beautiful proportions BUT! It has a portion of the table (both directions when flipped) that goes dark blue when looking at an angle. It was an "excellent" cut - is this common for all ovals or did I get a dud? It's rather distracting from the beauty of the stone :(

The online retailer says it will look better once set - is this true? Or just trying to pass the buck?

Excellent doesn’t really mean much when it comes to oval cuts. :(2I’ve seen ideal / excellent cuts that had terrible bow ties. I returned an “excellent” because there was little sparkle and a significant bow tie.

If you don’t like it now, I don’t see you liking it more once it’s set. I see the dark portion you’re talking about and I do find it distracting. I would personally return and keep searching. For me, I’ve found that looking for a depth of 60-62 percent helps minimize bow tie. I’m looking for a MMD so I also like to look at GCAL because of the imagery they include. If you’re were you, I’d ask for ASET or similar images before purchasing again.

Thanks, everyone, its great to get an honest second opion. I have decided I will exchange it.

Adiamor has been great at helping me find a new stone. They suggested the following within my parameters;
https://www.adiamor.com/Diamonds/0.80-ct-F-VVS2-Excellent-Cut-Oval-Diamond/D43947003
https://www.adiamor.com/Diamonds/0.80-ct-F-VS1-Excellent-Cut-Oval-Diamond/D43857981
https://www.adiamor.com/Diamonds/0.80-ct-E-VS1-Excellent-Cut-Oval-Diamond/D43879631

And two I liked that I asked to look into:

Anyone of these stand above the others (or better value)? I do like long ovals hence the high L:W Ratio!

Can you ask for other imagery? It’s just really hard to tell with ovals. I would toss out the one with 63% depth. The others do have a good depth to help minimize the bow tie, but the longer it is, the more likely the bow tie.

interesting because the Elyque oval by August Vintage are typically like 66+ depth and those have no bow tie. My oval now is 67 and has very minimal bow tie too but it isn’t AV (I actually don’t like those for some reason). My understanding was deeper gives less bow tie but also less spread.

Everything that I read didn't suggest over 62% for an oval brilliant. I know with the different cuts, they will be deeper, but I didn't think that an oval brilliant that deep would return the most sparkle? For my eyes, anything less than 60 wasn't great or over 62. But I also feel like there are diamonds out there of all shapes and sizes that can be beautiful, just harder to find. =)2

All ovals need to be evaluated on their own merit...a depth of 63 should not cause a stone to be eliminated.

Back on the hunt - will ask for ASET images here on out! What do you think of this ASET? It's my favourite stone to date visually but the upper end of what I was looking to spend 1571545932286.png : 1571545932286.png

Sorry for the delay everyone!

Here is the link to the stone ASET shared above - it has been my favourite online so far:

This one also caught my eye as it is so unique (but no ASET available) - anyone have any insight into this style of cut?

Open to other retailers who can ship to Canada!

I think the first one is very promising. The second one is a hard no for me. It looks like a Good & Plenty candy. Also, the GIA inscription reflects in some of the facets that face up. 6C2C2D16-FDF5-40E4-AC45-014360D12148.jpeg

Thanks Southern Elle! It was unique but great feedback!

Okay think I am getting down to making my final selection. I learned so much online here! Here is a last one, definitely doesn't appear as strong as some of the others in performance, but it makes it up in being quite a bit more affordable, which is nice, but still want a beautiful stone!

"You’ll find the requested image attached to this email for your review. The equipment that takes ASET images in our New York office take images that are rather unforgiving, so there’s a bit of white throughout the image, but there’s also a bit of a spread of red (direct light return) and green (indirect light return). You’ll find the image attached to this email.

The gemologist reported that your diamond has an attractive outline and great light performance. In person, they didn’t find its light performance to be lacking in anyway. They stated that its brilliance is balanced, preventing the bow tie from being too noticeable. They also noted that that is very clean for an SI1 and that the average eye will find it to be eye clean. Lastly, they confirmed that it has a true “F” color and that it’ll appear icy white."

This one too has the GIA reflected in the cut - they said this would not show on the actual stone at normal size but is this always a sign of something to avoid (in cut, light return, etc).

What's everyone's critique on this one? Thanks for the recommendation KK Johnson - going to look more into that one as well!
