Getting married soon and will be wearing my grandmother’s bracelet yellow gold w/ a large amethyst (from the 1940’s) on that day.

After extensively on line and reading abt custom work I decided to meet w/ DK and Amy in LA bz l live in SoCal. They have been great and came up with a design for earrings that go with my grandmother’s amethyst set. Pricescope has been a wealth of knowledge and want to check in here before I give this project the “go”.

What do you think of the proportions?

This is my first time really seeing CAD images/not just buying earrings and I am not a designer.
I am thinking of going with the smaller/longer looking amethyst.

the first photo is a wax cast of the CAD w/ the smaller/longer amethyst

Are the Amethysts being custom cut for you?

It's missing something for me.
I would add a design element at the top of the amethyst that echoes the part that goes into your ears. A metal part. Like at the top of the stone on these-- this idea, not necessarily this design: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/b7/18/72/b71872dc1bb6074b403b0e4cf357e395.jpg it can cover over the top of the stone too.

As for the stone size. They do look a little disproportionate. Add the design element at the top and shrink the stone size. See what you think then.

I see what you are saying abt a possible design element at the top of the amethyst as well. . . . thanks for your feedback Gypsy

I would make sure to take your grandmother's bracelet to them and ask them to have the color matched closely. There are a LOT of shades of amethyst. It would be a shame to go through all this trouble and not have the colors be similar. Especially as amethyst is plentiful, comparatively speaking, and affordable.

A great reminder, yes I took the set in and the color is very similar match but -will- dbl check in both sunlight and regular inside lighting.

yes, am fortunate amethyst is plentiful. There are many stones I wouldn't be able to afford specifically at this size.

Okay that's great news. You are on top of it then!

Please come back and post pictures of the finished earrings. I love projects like these.

Hi all-
This is the modification from the last CAD.
Adding a metal design element at the bottom of the dangle/above the amethyst.

I am going to look at it for 24 hours often . . . it helps me get a feel.

But in the meantime what are your thoughts?

The first CAD or the second?

Element at top should be wider but more squat, smaller amethyst I think.

Thanks for the feedback Gypsy. . . .

Yes I have asked for the amethyst to be cut smaller.
The response is:
"I have not changed the amethyst size but it will be a bit more narrow. We need the cutter to see the stone to see how much more we can take in from the sides."

Are you thinking take in from the sides only or a touch smaller all around?

Hi Gypsy
question: "The element at the very top, or above the stone? "

When you say smaller amethyst are thinking: take in from the sides only or a touch smaller all around?

Hi!
The modifications came back quick.
-Really- liked your recommendation Gypsy that the metal element above the amethyst needed to be wider but more squat.

What do you think of this version?

If you like it I would add one 'petal' oriented like the below to the element at the top of the amethyst.

I see what you mean . . . to frame the stone a bit . . .will ask DK to add that to the CAD and then we can take a look at it . . . compare.

One of the best parts about earrings is that they allow for movement. I would make sure that the earrings have some element that allows the stones to articulate, because then they move independently and the stones can catch the light without you having to move your head.

I definitely agree with this. I think those do move though. none of the connections (except the element to the part holding the oval) look fixed to me.

yes!
That was something we(Amy at DK) talked abt in the beginning, the middle bit is -not- fixed together all the round circles (small diamonds set in a bezel) will be linked so it swings and moves.

Me too . . . .
What do I think: I like the last two CADs --much-- better than the first one/ picture of the wax cast earrings.

The earrings -needed- a little something more so they didn't look like a purple lolly pop hanging from my ear and I think the element above the amethyst and making the amethyst smaller does just that.

I have a much easier time "seeing" the earrings in wax cast rather than just the CAD image.
So I am going to ask DK to make a wax cast of the -last- two CAD images put the wax cast up to my ear and that will make the decision easier for me.

Strongly leaning towards the last CAD image. When I look at it, it looks complete.

Sounds like a good plan!

And yes the lollipop effect is why I suggested the element.

The last CAD looks amazing. Of course, like what Gypsy mentioned, it's what you like that matters 8) . I hope we get to see the finished earrings with your grandmother's bracelet!
