Hi jewelgal - I thought I'd post some examples of old cuts and also the cushion brilliant. They are all gorgeous! First up...a cushion brilliant ring (Diamond Brokers of Florida)
This is the best I could do to show what OMC and OEC are about. The OEC can be more symmetrucal - this is what i woudl expect from either less fine or earlier stones to look like. The OMC picture comes from GOG and was edited to fit here. The EGL cert of the OEC is down THIS link.
no it was a different jeweler (i think-i've been to so manY) he cushion brilliant i saw today was very clear and modern looking. very "perfect" i guess - very New is the word. Very sparkly. smaller facets also......pretty!
Hello Valeria- thx for the pics and info on differences between omc and oec. i called oec
"old english cut" and the jeweler said, "no honey, that's a furniture polish!" i was like oh my gosh! (but i've heard that term here on pricescope before) - the pic of the cushion is very pretty and according to that link it puts out a lot of light return..... Is that guy lying about the value of the OMCs???? Would I be as he said, "throwing my $ away?"
Hello Sparkler - thx for the pics - it really shows me the differences of each cut- i actually can't tell u which one i like the best, but i really keep looking at the Tiffany one...old mine cut?
it's very soft and chunky and large facets---i also like the cushion brilliant but it reminds me of a round brilliant; the regular old fashion. cushion (the one at top of 2nd page) looks very nice too..... i guess it depends on what it looks like in person and how big, etc...
ok- now I am convinced that David's photos SUCK. That stone is really pretty...but all of his pictures look horrible. That's a good one. David- if you're out there....listen up!!!!!
hey jewelgal, i was browsing the web this morning and saw these gorgeous antique rings and thought of you. do you like any of them? not sure if they're exactly what you're looking for setting-wise but they're all either OMC or OECs, and they're all under $10k on antiquejewelryforsale.com. only problem is that, because they're older stones, they're all of fairly low color (as least compared to that D you want!
)
i personally like the one in the upper left the best.
But he is no lying either: it is HE who would be throwing money and profit away stocking up merchandise that only one client every five years asks for. These old diamonds are fashionable, but the respective shop may not be selling the sort of higher end jewelry that goes with the trend. So they do not "throw their money" on what their regular clients do not ask for. Obviously, you are not part of their usual clientelle
Here's my OMC. The lighting's bad, but you can see what the facets look like pretty well.
I'm really not a good person to ask because I'd take an OMC or OEC anyday over a RB. But then, my e-ring is an EC, so brilliance isn't my main concern. Your jeweler is, uh, annoying. Sure an OMC isn't worth as much, but as a collector of all sorts of vintage items (pens, clothes, etc.) I'm awfully glad I can get something unique with a sense of history attached to it at a better price than I can get a modern item. I'd bet if he owned a Victorian house 30 years ago he would have been one of those ruining it by all sorts of modern renovations; stripping it of all the ornate details that make those homes so prized now.
I love the lumpiness, the inprecise facets, the *character* of my OMC. I wouldn't even trade it for a modern cushion.
Jewelgal, ultimately you have to get a stone that speaks to you. However, don't forget that you're not required to have only one stone at a time. You have lots of other fingers, so after you make your choice you can still buy the other shape down the line for another ring.
Hey guys! Here are photos of my new Vintage Wedding Set that I snagged for only $276 on ebay. I Love it!! It is so white in person and sparkly.
It is perfect and I always wanted a vintage matchy-matchy set like this one. It's so funny how cheap it is, yet how much i love it. Even when I went looking at diamonds yesterday, this set looked better and I liked it more than any other settings or diamonds... My jeweler resized the rings and
added a lot of gold, making it very thick - see photo 3 on top. for only $55 bucks! He said it would cost around $140.. This set has a secret hook
that pops out to connect the 2 rings together. Very cool. It will hold me over til I find the perfect setting, but Reena found some settings I love - so will check that out. I also need a diamond. Gotta figure out which one! OMC OEC or RB!
Reena - I Love Those Settings!! Thank you so much!!! I can't wait to check out that site!! I love the 1st one and 2nd one! That is Just what I'm talkin' about! You know it! Thanks!!!!! Give that cute doggie Roosevelt a kiss for me!
Valeria- That's an excellent point - why would he buy an OMC just to have it sit in his store for years? ??
Hest 88- Bee-yoo-tee-Full Ring! I Love It!!! I do love that cut a lot! It is gorgeous!! I agree about the character of it. The facets might not be perfect, but that's what makes it unique. Thanks for showing me!
