I have been doing tons of research and maybe it's just on this site. B&M very little inventory as of now. But are cushion cut's becoming trendy i have always liked them because you didn't see cushion cut E-rings that often. What does everyone think :?:

I'm not sure what you mean by trendy. They have been around since the 1800's. I love them , but if you are thinking that they will be "out of style" in the future, then get a round and call it a day.

No, I know they have been around for a very long time. I guess what i meant was are they becoming a more popular "trendy" right now. Or is it just this sight that has alot of traffic about them. I will with out a doubt still be getting my soon to be a cushion because it is timeless and I just really like the look.

Hmm, I think they have a solid following. People who like them tend to really seek them out, which can entail a lengthy search for an actual antique.... but I'm not sure I'd say they're trendy. (that rather negatively implies temporary popularity.)
Maybe the fact that Tiffany introduced a branded modern cushion does speak to their recent popularity....but I still would not say trendy.
And I'd be a little hesitant to use this board as a broad indicator of jewelry trends.

I saw a similar, but old, thread on halos...been around in some form forever, but recently surging.
I guess it's in the eye of the beholder.

I think cushion cut is trendy within a very specific demographic. Your average person going to go the mall for an e-ring---no, they aren't likely to want cushion cut.

cushion cuts are one of the earliest cuts in the history of diamond cutting ...this is what I have heard. They are not trendy at all. the diamond industry seems to have pushed the MRB's over the last several decades so most people when buying diamonds are not even aware of cushion cut stones when they go to a jewelry store to select a diamond.

More people are becoming aware of cushion cuts in the last several years and so they have a renewal of popularity as people become more educated when purchasing diamonds, but they are not "trendy"...they will most likely always be sought after for a great cut in diamonds.

While cushion cuts have indeed been around since before round cut diamonds were cut, the newest versions are a mix of rather rarey fine cut ones and a far larger number of poorly cut, lumpy versions. You have to do your research to get not only a pretty one, but a well cut one. It is way too easy for a seller to tell you a diamond is "fine cut" when it just isn't the case. It is on you to gain some knowledge and compare some diamonds. You surely can tell a great cut once you have seen an example.

A fine example is one like this: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/8510/ Of course, it is a modern cut diamond in a cushion shape. An old cut stone has far more variation and one might say and old stone has more individuality and character. You give up some things to get other things and it depends on what your personal goals and tastes are.

I think that while the cut has been around for a long time, they have become somewhat of a trend (in certain demographics).

I SO agree with David Atlas that antique cushions and modern cushions are two very different things! Antique stones (and antique style newly cut stones) in general are a trend on this forum. I don't know anyone out in the real world who has one unless it was a family heirloom.

People come here almost every day looking for modern cushions, and I almost hate having to help with those requests because there are FAR more ugly ones than well cut, beautiful ones. And since a lot of people don't do the research to find the great ones, I would imagine that a lot of bad cushions are going into engagement rings these days!

Perhaps tendy is not the right word due to the connotation around trends fading. I think what you are asking if cushion cuts are gaining popularity? I think the answer is that they are more popular now with Tiffany having their Novo, Harry Winston and their micropave halo, and Birks with their Amorique (in Canada).

I think mot people buy on shape - they think round, square, heart, etc. When they think square, they end up with a princess which I detest. More people are now understanding different square options such as cushions. But like DS said, very few people understand cushions and the range of selection is so wide ... we just don't see many good ones on the market.

I personally love cushions and OMCs.

Trending is a better word. I notice I see new trends on PS about 18 mo before it comes out in the B and M. I saw the halo here long before it was popular and my gf who works in a jewelry store is just now getting requests for cushions. I think the rose gold will be in stores soon too.

I think Aprilbaby pegged it. PS seems ahead of the curve in styles. Trendsetters more so than trendy. I found this wonderful site when reseaching emerald & asscher cut diamonds for myself. I have to admit I got very caught up in the antique cushion craze on here & almost changed my plan to get one of those instead of a step cut. In the end I still chose my step cut & I'm glad I did. But I would love a cushion pendant or RHR. IRL I never see cushion cut diamonds. Mostly MRB's or Princess with an occassional emerald cut.

A little off topic, but I think rosé gold has been trending/trendy for a while now.
And I for one a glad it's easier to come by! :appl:

True, because when stores like Tiffany carry it, you know it is going to be a trend!

But what I will say is that I love the old style diamonds that are "back" at the moment, because ultimately they will never be out of style...rounds rb's and OEC's), emerald cuts, asschers, antique cushions.

I think that certain cuts have their moment of popularity. I have observed various engagement rings over the years- my mother's friends through my own. Emerald cuts in the 40s, marquise were very trendy in the 50s and pears in the 60s. The 90s saw a lot of princess and radiant cuts. Now it seems asscher and cushions. Of course rounds are the most popular. These are my observations only in the Chicagoland area.

I think in the 2000s ... they are old cuts, cushions, asschers.

I agree with that here, but honestly, my daughter and all of her friends either have a round or a princess (and all the younger women I taught with as well).

I don't know about this one. I won't dispute the word trendy vs trendying etc. I just think with PS you need to keep it seperate from "real world." Most people do not spend the time or energy that we do on research diamonds, settings and colored stones. If I went off reading PS I would assume most people have at least 3-5 wedding sets   and more then a dozen bands to mix and match with :))

Exactly!
This is truly a place where a girl with several rings can find acceptance! ;)
