I read that when a diamond has a crystal inclusion as opposed to a feather, that the crystal is usually
Olivine (Peridot), Garnet or Diamond. I also read that at the small size the Olivine will look clear, i.e.
not green. As Peridot and Garnet is far softer than diamond (although I know if it inside the main diamond),
I am wondering if there is a way to determine that the crystal inclusion in a stone is infact diamond too. I know
about crystal faces like octahedron etc so would the crystal if rounded be more likely to be Olivine and would diamond look
more square, hard edged. Garnet I take it would look dark, would you be able to see any red.

I always find such topics fascinating. Hope more experts can weigh in.

If you have money to purchase a Raman microspectrometer or X ray diffraction equipment or a energy dispersive x-ray fluorscence (EDXRF) machine and take time to learn how to use them, you could. GIA uses these machines to identify inclusions and even so, they cannot guarantee an accurate analysis in every single scenario you can think of.

The one method that guarantees a 100% accurate analysis is to break the crystal apart and extract samples of the inclusion for chemical analysis.

Thanks leoshraeder. Pretty difficult then. Just wondered. :)
