Storm, the jeweler e-mailed me only part of the initial fax info he got from GIA. This is a pretty stone and a look that I like, but it is not a Royal Asscher type with a lot of depth, deep corners and a really high crown. It is a larger-tabled one & I believe it is a bright-drop style.

From what I have from the initial GIA (emailed to me by the jeweler)
2.0 ct
depth 63.4%
table 66 %
girdle thin-med
polish excellent
clarity VS-1
color K
Fluor Med Blue

Additional info from the independent appraiser:
symmetry excellent
cutlet none
crown angle 34.0

I doubt it is one of the more expensive square emeralds due to larger table, etc.....
near the higher end prices for comparable color and clarity and above the low end would be where id put it.
Some places would consider it premium for the lowish depth and mid range table and 1.00 l/w.
The comp K/VS1 on the PS search I saw were low end so id expect the price to be a bit higher than that.

never mind had a chair to keyboard interface error...

I see three seperate issues to consider.

(1) The shop was acting inappropriately in giving the diamond such a high color grade. They would have acted more above board to give an approx. range indicating that they were unsure themselves. Obviously they knew what they were selling to be able to price it in the first place.

(2) Despite (1) above, the price may still be fair(ish) (for a b&m shop) for the correct specs being 2c. K, VS1.

(3) After all is known about (1) and (2) above, does the poster still want to keep the diamond? If so, I would say enjoy it as it must have its own beauty to have been chosen in the first place. 2 carat diamonds can easily go to $30000 plus, so this stone is reflecting the premium for VS1, but compromising on color to keep the price down. If the poster has genuine buyers remorse, I think the shop has a responsibility to find another diamond or refund the money. imo

I do have an appraisal from the store that lists it as an H.
Then Kelly, I would take the GIA cert to the jeweler who sold you the stone and ask what they will do. You paid for this stone with the assumption it was an H. It was represented to you as an H. I think there is a legality about misrepresenting a stone by a certain margin. It may not have been purposely deceitful, but if they are honest, they should make some kind of settlement, I think.

Yep, I agree with Sharon. . .

Kelly,
If you "can live with the fact that the stone is a K," then I would do so and enjoy your diamond. It''s a known fact that uncertified diamonds are often misgraded and clearly yours was, but you love the stone, right? Then it would seem it''d be in your best interest to take that to heart rather than obsess over how much you overpaid, which I cannot see resulting in any positive outcome.

before one can talk settlement one must have comps and know what the real value is in the market it was purchased.
We now know its a reasonable well cut GIA k/vs1 1.00 L/W
Im not finding good comps on the PS search and don't know the local market so I cant help much.
Maybe one of the appraisers will be willing too go out on a limb here but I doubt it.

I completely agree, Storm. But if she can''t access that information, I think ANY refund would be better than nothing.

Thank you so much for all of your input. I want to keep the stone & am glad to know it''s full story--color and all. Just like anyone, I do not like feeling duped--intentional or not. As I reflect back on the whole transaction, I guess the thing that bothers me is not listening to my gut regarding the purchase. I talked myself out of my concerns about it being non-cert, etc (they are an old, well known local store in a New Orleans suburb) as I told myself that I had a safety net of the independant appraiser. But that did not work out, either. Alas, we are really only talking about the color grade here--nothing major in the grande scheme of things. **My personal issue is that I have perhaps gotten out of the habit of listening to my gut--and it is almost always right*** but, that is a story for another forum :)

Moral of the story--do your homework and listen to your gut. May cost you a couple of grand if you are lucky. Maybe more.

I''m still thinking of how to handle it with the B&M. Honestly, I''d like them to know about the discrepency--but beyond that I have no expectations as it has been 3/4 of a year since I purchased the stone. And they sent me a really nice cheese basket for Christmas

"I can live with the fact that the stone is a K. But, having a brain I am confused at how the appraiser could be so off?"

kellyfish, I read your first post again.....and it stuck me that diamonds are color graded from the back. But your stone was in a temporary mount when the appraiser saw it, I believe, you said. So your pretty stone was color graded when mounted, is this correct??

Seems that you have a beautiful stone that faces up quite white
