Hi everyone,

I've been lurking in the forum for about 6 months since I started saving up for a diamond and since my GF started asking for diamond stud earrings. I've been shopping online and met with a few wholesalers and it appears like online prices are better than the wholesalers. I think I finally figured out what I am going to buy and just wanted some re-assurance that I'm on the right path.

So my budget is around 20-22 for everything. As of now, I'm looking to get this diamond from blue nile
http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search?pt=setform&track=NavDiaSeaRD#diamonds_pid=LD03725298

and put it on a 6 prong solitaire setting from Victor Canera.

Thoughts on what I put together?

I also bought an ideal scope which I plan on using once the diamond arrives. I also have another question. Why is it that some diamonds that get AGS 0 or Blue Nile Signature recognition score so poorly on the Holloway cut Advisor? Is it possible to for a Excellent diamond with a low HCA score to have poor light performance?

Thanks for your help ahead of time.

For that kind of investment I would want actual photos of the diamond and scopes.

Yeah. That makes sense. I was just going to buy an idealscope and just scout it out myself but I guess if it doesn't work out I have to go through the hassle of returning it.

If it came down to a diamond with a great idealscope but an ok HCA and a diamond with a great HCA but no idealscope, what would you go for?

I would be holding out for a diamond with everything... a great idealscope, a great HCA and photos. I wouldn't be taking my chances with anything.

For that kind of money and wanting a larger stone, I would definitely be doing a lot more investigating. Have you contacted different vendors to see what they have available? Victor, IDJ, GOG, Whiteflash?

If you send them an email with your budget and specifications then they will be able to let you know about some great stones. And the ones they have in house...they have seen them and can tell you exactly what they are like in real life. Most are pretty quick to reply too.

If you are using Victor for the setting why not get the stone from him too? I like this one: http://www.victorcanera.com/diamonds/kxfyq1

And I believe he has stones that are not listed on the website. I'd call him - he can probably work on a "package deal"

I've looked at all of the companies. Victor, Brian Gavin, GOG, Whiteflash. Best price so far has been blue nile. Who is IDJ?

The thing is, my girlfriend is set on 2 carats. I wish it could be smaller but I'm stuck on that. I guess I should shop around for a few more places. Am I being greedy with wanting everything at 19k? A diamond with everything is around 21-23k right now.

No!!!! You're paying for it!!!! I'd get her the 2ct, maybe go a little further down like to an I color SI1 clarity and put it in a solitaire for now. Then for an anniversary upgrade the setting to something she can pick out.

Here's what I found: JA offers PS members a 1-5% discount on diamonds.

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/2.14-carat-i-color-si1-clarity-ideal-cut-sku-231808 (love love love this stone).

The discounts from James Allen have all been about 1% which is pretty insignificant. Blue Nile allows me to get 5% cash back with my Discover Card up 12500 (so around 600 dollars).

This is so hard. . .

B2C just gave me about a 3or4% discount on a small, baguette wedding band.. I found Samuel there very helpful. I would buy from them again.

The B2g one works for me.....lucky girl

This is the stats for the blue nile diamond

Depth 61.3 %
Table 57 %
Crown Angle 34.5°
Crown Height 15.0%
Pavilion Angle 40.6°
Pavilion Depth 42.5%
Star Length 50%
Lower Half 75%
Girdle Medium to Slightly Thick, Faceted, 4.0%
Culet None

HCA 0.8.

I've read that you should aim for between 1-2 for HCA. Why is that?

Another issue kinda came up. It seems that the ring might be too big? Her ring size is 4.5. The diamond would be 8mm across which would take up her entire finger. Any such thing as a good ratio or is it all subjective?

Believe, complete finger coverage is not an issue but a benefit. It depends on your own personal preference though. I personally think it will be beautiful.
