Choosing engagement ring!

After posting on another thread I was lead to make a new topic here.

In short, I want to propose to my fiance and was wondering if anyone could share some knowledge regarding rings, I have some knowledge of diamonds but really not much when it comes to rings. I generally like aquamarine, the feel, the color and some other things. Although I don't know much about different metals, etc. ANY tips are appreciated.
And are gemstones simply there for the looks and does each have it's own deeper meaning or similar?

You love aquamarines. BUT… Does your gf have a special love for aquamarine stones? If not, you're probably going to want to propose with a diamond. Also aquas are are less hard than diamond- or even sapphire/ruby -there's a hardness chart here.

What is your budget? What is your gf like? Does she have a Pinterest account? Sometimes a little sleuthing can find you helpful hints as to what she might be hoping for an engagement ring that you can use as inspiration.
