BEM bought the 30mm which is on the large side. If you have 24 now you might be happy with the 26mm. One watch you linked has the MOP dial that runs the price up. If you liked sna's wife's Rolex, then look for the silver dial. And I would only buy pre-owned from an authorized Rolex dealer such as Tourneau unless DancingFire can recommend a reliable seller on TimeZone.

You absolutely have to go to a Rolex dealer and try on the two sizes. The 30mm is probably more popular right now, but the 26mm is the classic size and will never go out of style. I think Sna got the 26mm but she has a tiny wrist.

The eBay watch is really old!

Thanks DS! I don't know what I'd do without you. I have no idea what I'm doing, although the last couple of days have opened my eyes to new things due to the PSers helping me.

I'll look for a store nearby and will try to take a lunch break to look. What kind of questions should I ask when buying a used watch aside from the year and condition? Also, what year is considered old?? I obviously want something as new as possible.

Don't ask any questions about buying used watches when you go to look the first time. Just try on some new ones to figure out exactly what you like best in your wrist. Although, if you can look at an authorized dealer, you can certainly asked if they have any pre owned watches. I would personally not buy used unless it was like new, relatively new model year, and certified by an authorized dealer. Dancing Fire will be a big help when it comes to actually deciding on a specific watch or deciding on a dealer. I would also ask DF what the normal maintenance schedule is, how much it costs for servicing, etc. Automatic watches are a different ball game and it is good to know what to expect.

DF, you should post a thread in Hangout about what you need to know before buying a Rolex! That would be a helpful resource for a lot of people!

FWIW, I called Rolex a month ago and they recommend servicing every 5 years, and here in Los Angeles it currently costs $600 if no special repairs are needed.

I believe there are only two locations in USA that are true Rolex service locations, NY and Los Angeles.

Naturally, if you can't walk it in you have to add round-trip shipping to the $600.

I went to a store in Burlingame called Kerns Fine Jewelry and tried on different watches. The brand new ones were crazy expensive and I cannot afford one that I like. I would feel too awful spending THAT much money on a watch, having kids and such.. I guess it's all relative to how much money you make/have, and I want this piece for myself to celebrate, but I don't think I can justify anything over $7K, even $6K is alot... I mean $4-5K is ALOT if you think about it.

Since when are kids more important than watches and diamonds?...

Rolex lube and tune up every 5 years is $600? :o

Holly smokes! I knew they had to be serviced, but every 5 years? and $600 each time (which will probably go up over time).... that sure is pricey just to keep my watch running.... a quartz sound pretty good right now. HAHA

Haha! You haven't met my sweet kids... and speaking of, we took them to Disneyland last week, and ... is anyone else outraged by the prices there???... Totally not related but here they are all made up.

DS, I tried to do that this time, went in and tried to stay cool, but saw the Rolex section and got excited! So all I tried on were Rolex watches.

DF, that would be SO helpful! I am sure I'm not the only one that is obsessed with buying a pre-owned Rolex right now. (chanting) Do it! Do it! :)

The newer models are more expensive b/c the newer style bracelets are solid gold links. Rolex recommend to have the watch serviced every 5 yrs.,but I was wearing an 18 yrs old (never serviced) Rolex before it got stolen, and it was still keeping ex time.

P.S... nowadays, I am not up to par on Rolexes, but I'd have my eyes on the S/S Sub C. watch.

As a Rolex owner, I'd go for the ring upgrade. I hate the fact that unless you wear your watch all the time, or keep it on a watch winder, it doesn't keep proper time. It was so embarrassing to be out and about, have someone ask me for the time, only to discover that my watch had the incorrect time :o

Ugh, that is a huge disadvantage to me. I do wear more than one watch, so that would be a problem.

Lovelyhearts, I am sorry my last post was written before I had read all your latest posts about your visit today! That is great that you were able to try on the watches to determine what you wanted!

Your girls are adorable!!!

I'd keep my eyes open for those "one night stand watches". Some of the guys on watch forums are like some of you ladies here on PS with settings...kick your new setting out of bed after a couple of weeks.... I have seen some "one month old" watches for sale on the watch forums. I mean these are like brand new watches from the AD with boxes,papers,etc...

I also really prefer the look of the Cartier watches. A less expensive option that looks a lot like the Tank Francaise is this:

http://www.cartier.us/collections/timepieces/womens-watches/tank/tank-solo/w5200013-tank-solo-watch-small-model

A classic look that will serve you well for years, and you'll have money left over to put towards your upgrade... or take hubby out to a wonderful dinner with... or to splurge with! (To be honest, I like the lines on this watch better than those on the Francaise.)

I have this watch and I love it!

Here's a not so good picture of my Rolex. I must say I love my watch but I think a Rolex is almost like a piece of jewelry. You can buy a Timex if you simply want to know the time or just look at your phone. Buying high end watches is more about buying a piece of jewelry that you would wear and enjoy every day. You just have to know whether or not the money spent is worth it to you. I insure it like I do my other jewelry which frees me to wear it everyday without worry. I am as careful about it as I am my ering but it's not something I want to put away for dress up - if you know what I mean. It is sort of a statement piece and I think that Rolexes are highly recognizable. Having said that, I think it is a fantastic way to mark a milestone for yourself - much more so than a diamond upgrade. I love those too but that's a partner type of decision and gift.

I have had a couple of them and have never had to have one serviced. I have seen ones that have been sent in for cleaning and such and they truly come back looking absolutely brand new. I've been told that if they are serviced by anyone other than Rolex that the warranty is voided although I don't know that the warranty is such a big deal. If the time comes for service, I will definitely pay the premium and send it to Rolex. Many authorized dealers will offer a discount although Rolex frowns on this but it is definitely worth asking. I think I got 15% off of this one and it helped seal the deal.

This is the newest version of this model. It changed a few years back after them making the same model for 50+ years. The differences were slight but were things that spoke to me. The new lugs are polished rather than brushed, the 'pins' that held the watch to the band have been eliminated, the watch weighs a bit more than the older model, and the clasp is now made like the Presidential model so that the band is nearly seamless. The word Rolex is written on the inside of the watch where the crystal meets the face.

Good luck with your decision and congrats on the milestone!

The watch looks great on you! Your ring is pretty too. Great pieces. I'm looking for that "statement" piece too. And I agree that it's like a piece of jewelry. That's why I initially wanted something that is two toned.. although I mostly wear white gold, platinum or silver pieces, I thought it would be great to have a piece that is interchangeable, but after trying on the actual watches, I really liked the steel better.

And now DH is telling me he prefers the Cartier tanks.. he thinks they look better than the Rolex... go figure..

Decisions... decisions...

OooOO, good idea. I'll keep an eye out for one. Hopefully, someone will kick their one month old watch out of bed soon.

DF, what about seller on TZ named LawrenceB?

And what does it mean on Rolex when it says Z serial?

Okay, I just found that Z indicates 2006-2007. What would the letters be for 2008 to now?

I have the midsize Rolex and I love it! It's vintage and is from the late 60s/early 70s IIRC. I bought it from my slightly cuckoo former boss for $600! (His father collects Rolexes and gave it to him but it was too small for him since it's the midsize one.). I took a few pictures but I think it always looks bigger in pictures than IRL. I've seen used plain SS Rolexes for $2500 or so online. You can definitely find them for much less than retail, so I would definitely buy used.

Wow, Thing! What a deal!

LovelyHearts, I take it you realize that the ladies 26mm is the size you have now, and there is also a ladies 31mm which is what BEM bought. The mid size is worn by men, too, so it is 36mm, I believe. If I got the deal Thing did, I would have bought it, too. But if you are buying new or relatively new-used and paying $5-6k, I would probably go with the 31 mm size extra large watches on women may go out of style. I am pretty sure that was debated on BEM's thread.

Yes,from time to time they do pop up for sale.

He's a long time member and a good guy,but his prices are a little high. About 3 yrs ago Rolex went to a random serial number sequence.

Thanks, DF! I do see some new ones with SDJ after them, so I see what you mean.

LovelyHearts, if you are considering Cartier quartz, I would consider buying those new from non authorized dealer since there is rarely ever an issue with quartz. Here is the large ladies Roadster like DeeJay has:
