Arrgh.....the head on this ring is driving me crazy......I can''t see or get access to the underside of the stone to clean it.

I don''t like a lot of metal and I like thin shanks. The current setting does make the stone "POP".

I was thinking about something along the lines of ........

I know one or 2 psers have got the scholdt and its gorgeous.

If you don't like a lot of metal and you do like thin shanks, I don't think that setting will make you very happy. It'll be showing a LOT of metal in order to hold a 5 ct. stone! (That thread is showing a 1 ct. stone in that setting, so naturally it is thinner for that size stone.)

I''m not much help but I think you need to post lots of pictures of this ring and show us where you''re having the trouble

Stunning stone sparkles when I think not a lot of metal and thin shanks I think Leon though that sholdt is beautiful as well.

What other characteristics would you like besides access to the bottom of the stone?

I went back to look at your earlier thread to get a better look at the current setting. Is that the Stuller Solstice head? Those prongs are a little on the thick side, which would make access difficult. Of course, I have a Leon basket setting and I can''t reach the sides of mine, either. However, the ultrasonic is like magic! It cleans it perfectly! Are you not using an ultrasonic? Because that is the only way to really get a ring clean.

I would say that stone would ''POP'' set on a twist tie! What an amazing stone! And an ACA to boot!!! Lucky you!! It must be a real blinder. Wish I could see that in person!!

*is green with envy*

hmmm I think a Leon solitaire would be so lovely. I think it might be tough to open up around the pavilion, because your stone will need the support. Second the ultrasonic.

Sorry, I think this should have been posted in Rockytalk. Hopefully someone could move it for me.

Thanks for all the replies...I was not stuck on the idea of a half bezel......

The fact that I can''t see the bottom of the stone is also irritating me.

Sparkles,

Aiiiyaaa!! I see you're at it again!!

I don't think the half bezelled setting would make the stone pop more, if anything, it would obscure some of the light and make it pop less, but that's just my opinion. It'd also show a lot more metal than yr current setting; and in addition would be harder, not easier, to clean.

I don't understand, to be honest, how yr current setting makes it difficult to clean your diamond. Isn't it a Tiffany classic style?

If you'd like to reset the stone because you don't love the setting or if you'd like a different look, then that's different, but I fear that your reasons for resetting the stone are not going to solve how you feel about it.

I am constantly thinking about resetting my stone. I've actually considered the design you posted. I think it's very beautiful. However, my only reasoning is that my stone is not big enough for me. I think if I was to reset it higher, it may actually give it the illusion of looking bigger. In fact, a higher setting would allow you to clean your stonne better and show off the bottom of the stone too (like you, I'd like to be able to see the culet). However, the practical aspect of a higher setting would need to be taken into account, particularly since you have small children and run around a lot (from what I remember you telling us in yr previous posts).

Ditto also what the others have said about the US. I don't have one but I pop into my jewellers (Sancy at the basement of Lucky Plaza) all the time to have my ring cleaned. Since they know me, and I've given them lots of business (I am constantly setting and resetting my jewellery, LOL), they clean my ring willingly and they do a darn great job of it too!

. I'd try that first before spending lots of $$$$ resetting that gorgeous stone of yours.

Just my 2 cents.

Ditto ditto ditto!

i also agree a Leon would be awesome. You will have to have a certain amount of metal to hold up that baby, but he does wonderful solitares with a little bling around
the prongs. The Sholdt is beautiful but I dont think it necessarily makes the stone POP. I think something thinner with maybe some curves in the basket would be great-you
know a little swoopy. Something that would add a little interest without being too ornate. Gorgeous stone you lucky lucky girl!

Thanks for all your help!

Lien, your''re not implying that by wanting to change the setting I essentially want a bigger stone

Actually I wasn't, but if I'd be happy to enable you any time, he he

I actually do *see* what you mean now. It's EXACTLY the same issue I have with my setting. The stone is set too low. In my case, I made them pierce a hole at the bottom of the head (if that makes sense, LOL), so hopefully that helps to loosen the dirt particles when it's washed in the US. Does yours have a hole at the bottom?

I still think you should try and have it cleaned in an US as often as possible, say at least once or twice a week if you can, and see if that makes a difference to your eyes. If it doesn't, then it's time to get it reset or at least change the head.

One word of caution if you decide to go with Leon, I *think* he does set his rings quite low too, but I am sure he can set it higher if you ask. Alternatively, you can ask him to set it in an open basket setting. How about the setting in the link below or something similar? hmmmmm !!

I''m just curious. Did you name this stone? "The Sparkles"?

I think Phoneix''s suggestion is great. That would be a stunning setting.

Is this head too busy. Can anyone visualize the petals paved. Don''t know how I would get my stone to LEON.

That is quite a rock, and I''m sure it''s blindingly gorgeous. Whatever you do with it, it''s going to stop traffic and cause a multi-car plie-up.

Congrats on owning a stone of that magnitude!

A 5 ct. ACA + Leon''s craft = *faint*

A ring like that should be called "Her Majesty".

Ah, to have such a pretty! 5ct - oh my gosh!
regarding Leon, yes he likes to set center stones very low. I wish I would have spoken up and insisted he set mine a little higher.
keep us posted - no matter what you do, it will be stunning!

WOW! I am speechless at the beauty of your stone!

Just realized the picture in my avatar is very yellow. Gotta correct that.

A 5 carat stone is pretty much going to NEED to be set low because it is going to stand up high off the finger regardless! The problem with the head on this particular ring is that it has fat prongs. leons prongs are more delicate, but he has to put the basket around the stone to support the prongs. Take a look at Harriet''s 3.6 ct. stone and you can see how a larger stone looks in Leon''s setting.

See how much more delicate the prongs are? Leon''s settings are almost invisible. The prong tips are so tiny you almost can''t see them, which is good, ebcause it lets the stone be the star. But you still need to clean them in an ultrasonic. A very inexpensive one works very well.

Leon does like to set stones low, but I''m sure that he''d happily comply if you asked for yours to be set higher.

With respect, DS, I am not sure I agree that a 5ct stone *needs* to be set low. My tai tai friend has hers set higher (and by "higher", I just mean slightly higher so that you can see the culet, but not so cathedral high), and it looks beautiful!! I think it''d be more the practical aspect of it for Sparkles to consider and also personal preference.

I do agree that Leon''s prong tips are very delicate. I also agree that Harriet''s setting is very elegant.

Lien,

Where did your friend get her stone set please?

I would love to do a Leon, But we are no longer talking Fedex, the whole thing would have to be done via Brinks internationally.

Sparkles,

My friend is all "cloak and dagger" about the whole thing. She won't tell me the exact carat size of the stone nor where she had it set. She said it was somewhere in Lucky Plaza and that it is her regular jeweller, and that's all I can get out of her! It certainly is beautiful though.

No worries though, she says they take in her stone and sends it to HK. I definitely wouldn't do that. They'd have to do it in front of me, or it'd have to be someone I completely trust. I am going to another jeweller in Thompson Plaza. I've seen one of my staff's ring who was set by them and another girl is going to get her engagement ring there. So it may be worthwhile to give it a visit. I may have my 3carater reset (as I am not getting my dream 4-5ct stone any time soon
7.gif
). I'm planning to do it next week or week after next. I'll let you know how it goes.

Brinks should be ok though, right? I've had a dealer in the past sending me a stone via Brinks and it was perfectly fine.

Your stone is amazing. I am having a hard time following the thread because your ring is so distracting. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
