Can fluorescence throw off a J color diamond's appearance?

Re: Can fluorescence throw off a J color diamond's appearanc

It isn't yellow. It is a warm brown. I think JA's lighting emphasis brown, as all brown stones of a color grade look darker than yellow stones of the same grade on JA's videos.. Their gemologist should be able to let you know if it is darker than other Js.

Thank you for the quick reply.

I've been lurking on this forum for two months, but I guess I don't know nearly enough to be informed. I thought that the color scale indicated "yellowness" from D to K, and then other colors were graded off that scale. So, a brown diamond can be within the D - K scale, with a noticeably brown diamond having a J color rating? Would the brown color be noticeably different from a yellow color in terms of light return, scintillation, brilliance, etc?

The color scale describes the presence of color whether it be yellow and brown or tones in between, not just yellow. I usually start to inquire which it is when Im looking for something past H. Usually most stones will show less color as you move towards D, what you must keep in mind is that the color grades are ranges so some show less color than others within their respective range. Another thing to keep in mind is that these color grades are assigned by people and the grading is subject to human error. AGS and GIA are very accurate with their grading in most cases but there are some rare blunders.

In terms of light return, fire, scintillation and brilliance the color of the stone does not affect this, nor would clarity characteristics above SI2. These characteristics of a diamond are a function of its cut. Though the opposite holds true as cut can have a significant impact on the appearance of color, with better brighter cuts helping to mask color.
