I have an inspiration ring and a CAD and know something is off but not sure what. I think the halo should be a bit rounder and angled down a bit so not so flat. But something On the sides also seems to need adjusting but I just can't figure out what. You guys are great at this so I would really love your help. Also what size melee in the halo?
I want a delicate ring so not sure what size to ask for. Thank you for your help.

This (analyzing CADs) is not my specialty, but I'll give you my input, and hopefully others with a more keen eye & sense of scale will chime in also.

Your inspiration ring is beautiful! I think I've seen it before, but cannot place where. I *think* the halo melee in the CAD look bigger than the inspiration (though I'm not good with suggesting sizes to use, so will leave that to others), as well as the halo itself looks wider (from the inner edge by the central diamond to the halo outer edge) than the inspiration. I agree that the halo might need to be rounded a bit more; as is, it has a slightly more cushiony appearance. And that's okay if it's what you want, but I gather from your comments, it's not.

The only other thing I would consider is if you wish to wear a band with this ring and have it sit flush. As is, it doesn't appear that will be the case, and again, that's okay if you don't mind 'rocking the gap'; just something to consider.

Hope that helps! Look forward to seeing the finished piece when it's complete. :wavey:

Might you have any other angle pics of the inspiration ring showing the profile? That might help in assessing other details.

I wish I had other views of the inspiration ring. I found that one photo by a google search and could not find any more of that ring. I agree that the melee should be smaller. I'm also thinking the side triangular parts need to be larger? and maybe the rondels need to be a bit more pronounced? This will be a right hand ring so I'm not worried about wearing it with a band. Thank you for your comments. They are very helpful. It's so hard when I know something is off but can't put a finger on it. Having the eyes of others really helps.

That's a Singlestone setting. Here's a couple more views for you. Sides are more "swooped" and the bands are different sizes. See the inside band is a little smaller than the outside band. Halo is tilted and looks like smaller melee as stated earlier. obviously gallery is different and higher to allow for the graceful swoop of the sides.

Great job, pinkjewel! :appl:

Here is a side by side of both that may help see the differences.

A couple other differences (up to you to determine preference, of course):
- The wraps on the side of the inspiration ring appear further down on the shank than the CAD.
- The inspiration ring center/halo sets up a little higher than CAD.
- The angle/height of the shields/cathedral appear lower in the CAD than inspiration.
- There is a donut under the center stone on the inspiration's shank, whereas the CAD has the basket looking more 'integrated' into the shank (no donut).

If you do not want the halo/center stone to set up as high, but prefer the inspiration shield angles, perhaps consider bezeling the center stone to keep it a little lower. Just a thought. :wavey:

Full disclosure: I am also not a CAD reading expert!!

To the point above: it looks to me as if the inspiration ring's side shield parts are off-center, with the side stone set closer the top (closer to the center stone) and the bottom extending/swooping down, which is why I think the wraps appear farther down the shank. The CAD side shield parts, to me, seem to look more like the stone is centered inside a diamond shape.

Thank you all so much. I can't believe you found more photos. I really did search and search and found only the one. I think I like the basket lower and the inspiration ring has the stone set higher than I would like. I also don't want the side pieces to be so swoopy and I don't need the donut. I agree that the rondels need to be down lower on the shank and more pronounced, the melee needs to be smaller and the halo smaller. I also think the side pieces could be a bit wider and longer (which will happen when lowering the rondels). I like the idea of a bezel. I'm going to try to mark up a print of my CAD and see what comes out, although art is not my strong suit. I will also tell him this:
  • make outer edge of halo a bit rounder
    use smaller melee
    tilt halo down a bit
    set stone in bezel
move rondels further down the shank and make a bit more pronounced
make side pieces wider and more elongated than the CAD
set side stones between the east/west points of the side pieces

it seems like a lot.....I hope he is patient with me. Again, thank you all and if I forgot anything above or you have more suggestions, please do make them. Your help is invaluable.

just an update, as I received photos of my finished ring today. I think it turned out just as I asked and all the tweaks were made. I should have it in a few days and looking forward to seeing it in person.halo95.jpg halo96.jpg halo97.jpg

I LOVE the way this turned out!!! Looking forward to seeing more pics and hand shots once you get it!!:appl:

Wow, that is perfection!

It looks beautiful! Hand shots when you get it...

Very pretty! Looking forward to more pics/handshots!

lovely!! I'll also look forward to hand shots when you receive your ring

I've posted some hand shots. I'm very happy with how this ring turned out. I initially thought I wanted the halo more narrow but glad I didn't go there. It's not a large stone and I think I needed a halo this size to get enough coverage so that the ring doesn't look too tiny. I'm also very happy with the low profile as that was important to me. I'd like to thank those of you who made comments on my CADs. They were very helpful. Sorry for the somewhat blurry phone photos.
