Breaking up a period suite of OECs - what would you do?

i have been incredibly lucky to find matching OECs for diamond earrings - something I have been hunting for for YEARS! The struggle!

The pair I have were part of a three stone ring. The faceting between the three is incredibly well matched, and I feel a bit sad to leave the third sister behind. However I wasn’t in the market for the third stone. The only project I can think of would be a pendant, but I don’t know if that’d look at bit odd being exactly the same size as my studs (7mm)? Or whether to just accept I’m splitting a period parcel that were once upon a time expertly cut to match - seriously even the angles are almost identical. It’s a first world dilemma to have for sure.

The vendor would offer the third stone at a discount. What would other PSers do? Would three identical diamonds look strange as a earring and pendant suite? I’m normally a mix and match person so I don’t know if this would be too perfect/clinical for me.

You could amp up the pendant with a halo or bezel or a more ornate setting style to stop the “too matchy matchy” look.
Me, I’d take the extra OEC, even if you don’t have plans for it right now. Good OECs are hard to find and you might regret it later. At worst, you can on sell the 3rd OEC yourself later on.

Take it, if you can afford it, no matter what you end up doing with it.

Keep it on hand in some way, or make it a center stone in a DBTY style necklace, or something. Halo it. Drop a marquise from it -- something.

But don't just leave an excellently matching diamond "on the table" so to speak, if funds allow.

Definitely buy it! I really like just the plain pendant... you don’t have to wear them all together but you have the option. I don’t think items such as classic studs and classic solitaire pendant are “matchy-matchy”. They’re wardrobe staples! Definitely keep the sisters together even if you aren’t sure what to do with it. You will kick yourself if you let it go!

Honestly if you can afford it, buy all three. Totally agree with everyone else.

You could even create a three stone right hand ring with some coloured side stone gems or a target ring or anything... But you will kick yourself if you let such a beautiful matching stone go I feel sure. Sell it on if you eventually decide it's not right ... There are plenty of people on here alone who would snap it up. Hopefully if that's the case the financial loss wouldn't be too big. :)

Definitely buy it! I think you’d come to regret it if you didn’t.

Apologies to the owner, I’m afraid I can’t remember their name, but this is just a gorgeous bangle using a similar sized stone I believe.

Another vote for yes to buying them all.

Get it and wear as a pendant. You could put the earrings in a basket setting and the pendant in a bezel to get more of a mix and match look.

another vote for all 3, if you can afford it.
i would do a pendant.. or that bangle that was posted! YUMMY either way. :=)

You have received tons of good advice!

Basically what those two lovely ladies said!

Thank you all! Everyone in agreement! Apparently the third one has some girdle issues so I’ll investigate further! I’m still a bit torn as I’d love a target ring but I think I’d have preferred a slightly bigger stone. Plus the ultimate in the wish list is a LARGE solitaire so it’s tricky to know what to do!

I’m still always trying to decide is I’m a holy grail girl or lots of options girl! I’ll let you know what I decide. I suspect I’ll go for it!!!

then can you get the 3rd sister cheaper?
there have been a couple of beautiful.suggestions already especially that bangle

you could put her with a couple of coloured gemstones for a new 3 stone ring

i wear a small bezel solitair as a pinky ring almost every day
she might not look matchy matchy on a pinky

I like the idea of a pinky ring! May I see photos?

its probably not accurate to have called it a solitair
i wear it primarly to protect my great Grandma's wedding ring from ever falling off

i got it off the internet - it was an insurence claim that had been paid out and then recovered/ found
your's would look much more modern
and bigger !
but i just feel your 3rd sister is too lovelly to be left behind and not loved and worn
goodness excuse my dirty nail- i have been pulling weeds (not with the ring on)

Gorgeous!

Sad news.... whilst deciding (and thinking I had held the stone), the third has been sold. I feel a mixture of gutted and relieved... I suppose rather telling! I’ll be so sad the suite has been split, but really glad I have he finest two for earrings I have looked for for ever. I’ll just try and focus on how to set them now. And save for a monster solitaire like @missy and co have! I’d love to find a biggy with similar faceting to this! Would you call is an american cut? @dreamer_dachsie I’d value your expertise?!?

@Gem_rocks I'm sorry the third one sold but look at it as an opportunity to get what you really want instead of settling. I find when one settles often it doesn't scratch the itch of what you really want. Did you reach out to the vendors you like and tell them exactly what you are looking for and what your budget it? I find calling the vendors works best vs email or messaging online.

We can help you find a marvelous monster old cut stone if that is what you want. Don't despair. Patience and time and money is all it really takes. I don't think mine is an American Cut but I do think @dreamer_dachsie 's OEC is an American Cut. It is a later European cut vs an earlier European cut. Search her threads and you can find the info you need.

Don't give up. Your blingy dreams can and will come true.

From @dreamer_dachsie 's post about George.

Here you can see the arrows, which tells us a couple things about the cut. First, the stone has amazing optical symmetry to create such a crisp and perfect arrow pattern. It also tells us that the lower girdle facets are long, which helps us date the stone. This type of old cut is verging on an MRB, and in my experience when the lgf get longer and the table a little larger -- this one is about 50% -- and the crown and depth more similar to MRBs... VOILA! No obstruction issues, and no under table leakage. Yippee!

@missy you are too kind. Thank you for you reassuring words, I very much appreciate them. I think my hesitation was that I didn’t have a project for stone three, and although it is stunning, I’m not in a financial position (my husband would murder me!!) to take on something I didn’t 100% love. I have made one or two errors previously - compromising on colour etc. For me I think I need to have patience and not compromise as it niggles long term.

I’m also keen for this not to overshadow the pair I’ve found for earrings! I’ll have to start a new thread on setting choices. I’m a healthcare professional so I think studs are more suitable than drops. I love Jessica McCormack’s cutdown gypsets which hang off a small gold hoop, but i want to wear them daily so studs should be better. I hope 7mm gives me he ear coverage I hope for! I was almost at the point of taking photos of my to ask PS’ers their opinion - whether to bezel or claw... I feel a new thread coming on!

Choose a setting you will love wearing. That is my advice. Independent of what you do for a living. I was a healthcare professional and gorgeous drop earrings are never inappropriate IMO. It's not like they are a crazy huge indecent obscene size. They are a respectable elegant size and would make lovely drops or gorgeous studs. It should be your choice and that should be based on what you see yourself enjoying and wearing often.

Good advice as ever!

@Gem_rocks, I'm sorry for the disappointment but tbh I think it might be for the best...I just didn't get the sense you were completely on board with buying the extra stone...the fact you had to think about it is a sign to me that you weren't totally comfortable with the purchase. Now you can hold off until you find something you're 100% sure about. And yes, now just focus on the beautiful earrings you are going to have! And I agree with missy, get the type of earrings you want, they won't be inappropriate for work.

I'd need to see more pictures to know for sure, but when I saw the ASET images I thought they looked like they could be late European cuts, sometimes called American cuts or Early Ideal cuts, or more generally, transitional cuts.
