bezel set studs - to milgrain or not?

Hi all - I haven't been here in a while but had a question for all you experts...

On a pair of roughly 1 ctw diamond studs, set in bezels (I have the WF bezels, so let's use that for kicks), would you have milgrain added or leave them plain? My WF baby bezels (about 1/3 ctw) are plain, but I can't decide on milgrain or not for the larger ones.

I'm not really a milgrain fan. I think it can make the metal look like it's got dark dots on it.

I have bezel studs and I think the shininess of the white metal blends in very well with the diamond and makes it look bigger. I think milgrain will create a somewhat darker ring. I like milgrain under limited circumstances, but only on heavily vintage-style pieces which tend to have an "older" look to them anyway - so not as modern and shiny.

I actually prefer milgrain across the board - it blurs the line between stone and setting and boosts the size on an almost imperceptible level. Depends on the milgrain and the bezel, of course - the clunky kind that looks like a beaded border doesn't serve quite the same purpose, and a high bezel will always make a stone look swallowed up. But a low bezel with lace-fine milgrain? Perfection!

I prefer *inside only" milgrain for antique stones. As said above ... blurs the line between stone and metal ... but then the outer ring has the plumping effect -- enlarging the appearance of the stone to the eye.

My earrings are significantly smaller ... tcw .66-ish ... but pix are around here someplace. The design was *based* on Widget's much, much larger studs that feature "inside only" milgraining.
