I'm wondering if you know of anyone who makes bezels as beautiful and as delicate as James Meyer.

I would absolutely love to get this one from James Meyer ( https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/james-meyer-bezel-reset-has-arrived.97999/ ), but he only sets his own diamonds now. Do you think this is something that BGD could do (I bought my diamond from BGD)?

I also like the Julia bezel from JbEG ( http://jewelsbyericagrace.smugmug.com/SignatureSettingsPortfolio/Plain-and-Pave-Solitaires/The-Julia-Bezel-Solitaire/13197667_hDLW3L ) but the view from the top is just a little too clunky. Maybe all it takes is some millgraine toward the girdle.

Is there anyone else that makes a really beautiful, feminine bezel (without being too antique)? My top budget for setting is $1750.

I wanted to ask before I start exploring the custom route. Thanks!!

I agree--it's beautiful. In fact, I hadn't caught that it was a repro when I initially saw the thread.

On that note, how do you determine whether a local jeweler can do good custom work? I would prefer to stay local (Boston).

Ask and see if they have done anything similar to the design you want. Ask to either see the piece or see the photos.

I used to live in New England and there was a FANTASTIC bench at a place called Day's Jewelers. It is a family owned chain but the guy that worked out of the MHT store was amazing and had a very similar style to JM. If he is still there you can ask about custom work and it is only about an hour outside of Boston.

However, I would still call around to Boston jewelers. If they even know who JM is that is probably a plus. I would hope that most of them would be honest with you and say if they felt they could replicate something similar or suggest someone who can. But like I said before look at their portfolio to see what they have already done- this will speak volumes.

I was thinking the same thing RB!!! I have to wonder though if JM found out about this ring if he would go after them for copyright infringment because it is just that good. Totally impressed how beautiful this ring is!

he had to see this coming after refusing to work with other peoples stones.

Brian Gavin is the king of perfect, thin, fine bezels. But be warned: they're wafer-thin. You can barely see them. But it sounds as if this is what you want as you said "delicate". Apparently the barely-there bezel is supposed to make the diamond look as if it's floating. I think the majority of people agree with this and love the barely-there bezels. Personally, I'm left scratching my head wondering why I paid for something I need to squint to see, but if that's what floats your boat then BGD will do a perfect job.

WF's bezels are thicker, by the way. Not thick, just medium and proportionate to the stone. I prefer those.

Just seen that you're from Boston, as I am.

E.B. Horn at Downtown Crossing does amazing custom work. Check out the E.B. Horn bezel on my pendant in this thread:

Ask for Irene and say her British customer who recently bought the dragonfly brooch and the pearl circle brooch with the sapphire sent you. She'll give you a good price.

ETA: Here is another sample of their custom work, not what you want but it shows the quality of their work. The ring is nice and heavy. The following three pieces of mine were not custom but were all made by E.B. Horn:

James Meyers son, Caleb Meyer has a studio in Philadelphia. He does similar work. Here's the website: http://www.calebmeyer.com/caleb_meyer_studio_custom_work.php

I would contact him to see if he can make a setting.

Ann McKay is affiliated as well : http://www.annmckaystudio.com/

If you haven't already looked at this thread, here you go : https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/show-me-your-james-caleb-meyer-ann-mckay-and-the-like.108008/

Perhaps I’m selling Brian short on this one but I’m not sure I would recommend him for a JM type/ inspired setting. Brian, to me, as a very specific design aesthetic which he is good at and I just don’t see him translating the JM design. I think it is more organic and fluid then rings he typically does.

Caleb Meyer also doesn't work w/outside stones, only his own.

My AVC bezel three stone was done by Single Stone https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/packrats-avc-three-stone-and-wedding-band-by-single-stone.180821/ they're not super wide bezels at all, very delicate.

For paper/wafer thin bezels, Chris at Mod Metal on Etsy did my mint tourm ring, and the bezel is barely there https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/two-new-rings-small-collection.190553/ I've got two rings from her and they are flawless.
