The movies shown here
http://www.octonus.com/oct/projects/foxymovies/MSS_9_diamonds_Daylight+LED.phtml
of 9 different diamonds - could be a way that consumers could make selections between diamonds of different appearance.
Clearly there is a lot of difference between these stones, both in outline and the way each sparkles.

There is a concurrent discussion started by Dave Atlas over here that prompted me to start this poll. https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/beauty-as-it-pertains-specifically-to-diamonds.128452/
please cast your vote and make comments.

Your comments and vote might also be effected by the value of each stone.

Interesting.

I'm not sure if this movie reflects responses I would have if seen in the real world, with the diamonds up close & personal, but I did feel I could rank them.

I don't see that your poll will let us do anything but make a first choice, but I do see my first choice matches that of others.

I'll rank them here:

Cushion 2
Pear
Princess
Pinfire Cushion
Maltese Cross
Marquise
Steep Deep
Cushion 1
T 57, C 34, P 41

This sort of effort seems new and provisionally helpful.

I'll be interested in seeing how opinions are reviewed and shared...

Order of desirability ....

1. Maltese Cross
2. Cushion 2
3. Pear
4. Princess
5. Middle RB

Do not want any of the others ... sorry!

cushion 2
pear
c34 p41
maltese cross

eta: have to say that the steep/deep did not look bad in the video. looked alot like the maltese cross to me.

Tie:
cushion 2
c34 p41

1. T 57, C 34, P 41
2. Maltese Cross
3. Cushion 2
4. Steep Deep
5. Princess
6. Pear
7. Marquise
8. Cushion 1
9. Pinfire Cushion

Marquise

Steep Deep

Cushion 1

T 57, C 34, P 41

Thanks for that Ira. And I did not know there could only be 1 pick - so what you are all doing is excellent. And boy does it show how varied taste can be.

Infact you would find a real world comparison quite similar excet for the level of magnification - probably the stones should be shown at 1/2 that size.

In descending order of preference:

Cushion 2

T57 C34 P41

Maltese Cross

Marquise

Pear

Cushion 1

The rest I dislike about equally, listed here in random order:

Princess

Steep Deep

Pinfire Cushion

Garry, Andrew

just one static shot would give misleading results

For correct poll results movie is critical .
We can prepare small movie in Apple format( move). could you develop new Poll format when PS''s could see movies directly in poll thread before voting ?

Serg, you raise a question of communications.

I saw the movie before voting (and included the same link in my post that Garry did in his for the movie).

But, did everybody see the movie before voting?

I agree, if there''s any doubt, it should be clear this is the case.

I watched the movie before voting.

I studied the movie for about five minutes before voting. Just grew to dislike some of them even *MORE* than my initial reaction.
3.gif

I studied the movie too.

1. Cushion 1
2. Princess
3. Pinfire Cushion
4. Cushion 2
5. Maltese Cross
6. Steep Deep
7. Pear
8. T57 C34 P41
9. Marquise

Just a note, I am not a fan of most round cuts. I don''t like the pattern of arrows when I see them. I also don''t like a very solid X on square cuts. I know I am not the norm on that though.

It took me a while to decide. I did pick based on movie and picture combined. Cushion 1 stood out to me immediately though as my favorite.

Tie for first

T57 C34 P41 and cushion 2

Second: cushion 1

I''m the kind of gal who likes clean, soft lines, and "organized" sparkle. I don''t like the top row due to the pointed corners on each, don''t like the pear because as you move closer to the point of it, it takes on a crushed ice look. This is the same reason I don''t like the pinfire cushion. The steep deep and maltese cross both have dark edges which I feel makes the shape of the diamond look odd. I also had a steep deep once, bezel set, and the edges always looked milky and dirty

Serg, maybe you can make the movie into a animated gif, but that would be big.

Prefer:

Cushion 2
Pear
t57 c34 p41

My favorites:

1. Cushion 2
2. T57 C34 P41
3. Pear (except now I see what the poster above means by the crushed ice look near the tip and that bugs me too!)

I don''t like the shapes of the marquise or the the princess much. The pinfire and cushion 1 look a little like crushed ice. The steep deep looks dull and I don''t like how the maltese cross appears sort of domed.

I have a round brilliant which I love, but if I could do it all over again I might be attracted to a cushion as well. Especially in a Harry Winston setting. I also really love the Hearts on Fire Dream cut.

My list, from favorite to least favorite:

Cushion 2 (this surprises me b/c princesses are my favorite cut)
Princess
57/34/41 round
Maltese cross
Steep/deep
Cushion 1
Marquise
Pear
Pinfire cushion

Favorite: cushion 2
2nd tier: T 57, C 34, P 41; maltese cross; steep deep
3rd tier: cushion 1, pinfire cushion
4th tier: princess, pear, marquise

Maltese Cross
Cushion 2
T57 C34 P41
Steep Deep
Cushion 1

The others I place pretty evenly because I either have no interest in the shape or didn't like what I saw in terms of reflections in the video.

Perhaps a better survey would be done with less detail in the naming of the stones. Here at PS we know that we are not supposed to rate Steep Deep stones highly for example. The voting my be influenced by what members think they should be seeing when they see the stones rather than what they actually see (we've seen this many times from new members who couldn't fault their stones before coming to the site). Similarly the Maltese Cross naming has a sense of romanticism about it which may increase bias. A naming convention such as; Diamond 1, Diamond 2, etc would remove those biases.

I'm not certain that I would have placed the Maltese Cross stone over the Cushion 2 if they were named differently. It is difficult to separate the stone in the video from other stones I have seen (and loved) that have the 'maltese cross' description applied to them.

All Valid HtHaY, however Cushion 2 is winning hands down over Cushion 1

I''m far from an expert on diamonds, but here''s my opinon based on the pictures and movie as an average clueless male consumer.
21.gif

T57 C34 P41 is my favorite, it drew my eye straight away, even before I realised what the numbers meant.
Cushion 2
Maltese Cross just because it''s such a different look that it stands out from the crowd.
Princess
Pear
Marquise
Cushion 1
Pinfire Cushion
Steep Deep

Would be nice to see an Emerald and an Asscher in the video too compared to the others, if only because I''ve just purchased an Emerald cut and I''d like to see it up against the rest
9.gif

I showed my girlfriend the video without showing her the names, and she preferred the Maltese Cross first, followed by T57 C34 P41 and then Princess.

1. Cushion 1
2. Cushion 2
3. T57
$. Pear
%. Pinfire Cushion
don''t really like the rest

1. Maltese Cross
2. Steep Deep
3. T57 C34 P41
4. Cushion 2
5. Pear

None of the rest are really to my taste. I'm a big fan of chunkier facets (as you can tell from my first choice), and the smaller the facets, the less interesting I find the stones.

Just a note before you take my order into account: I could not see the movie due to some download...
Here is my list

1 Pear
2 cushion 1
3 t57
4 cushion 2
5 maltese cross
6 steep/deep
7 princess
8 pinfile
9 marquise

I vote for the Fancy Yellow Cushion...oh wait, they''re all a boring white color
emwink.gif

I couldn't get the movie to play and I don't understand sarins etc., so this is based purely on the photographs in your original post (which is how I would normally buy a diamond) and I look for symmetry more than anything else:

1. Cushion 2
2. T57 C34 P41
3. Pear (although I'd prefer it without a bowtie but I like the general proportions).

The princess looks pretty but I don't like princess cuts. If I did, then it would probably outrank the pear.

Strange, but I have to say I like the steep deep.
