Asscher Saga: K/VS2, 1.5ct or H/VS1, 0.9ct?

Which would you prefer in an Asscher?

Another first world, Asscher conundrum. I'm caught between two options: getting a chunky, K colour Asscher 1.5 ct (6.25mm) and blow out my budget (ie - ring setting will have to wait), or getting a white, bright H colour Asscher that is smaller (0.9ct - 5.2mm) but have the funds to get a nice setting done right away. I can be convinced to go either way... which is why I'm here asking lol

Both Asschers in mind look great in terms of cut. I'm just wondering if anyone with a low-colour step-cut wished they got a higher colour stone (even if smaller), or if someone who got a smaller high colour stone wished they went lower in colour but got a bigger stone.

Thanks for your time as ever!

No one can make this choice for you; this question is all about preference and color sensitivity.

My vote would be neither; why sacrifice size for color, and why sacrifice the setting for size?
There has to be an option that gets you between 1.5 and 0.90, above H, and allows budget left for the setting.
Otherwise, why not wait, all together, and save more money to hit all the spots at once?

Thank you :) Yes, I know it's entirely a personal preference but I was wondering if current step-cut owners had a different insight. I love and own both high and low colour stones so open to either really.

Ironically finding a H/I/J colour in between .9 to 1.5 range is really hard! I ideally would like a 1.2 to get a comfortable 5.5mm stone.

I'm patient but I have noticed Asschers do get snapped up easily and I'm also mindful of the AUD getting weaker against the USD again in which case I'm likely to snap shut my wallet lol

But I want an Asscher... lol

I own an EC. Not an Asscher, but still a step cut.
It’s 1.07ctGSI2.
I would not drop in color to go higher in size or in clarity. I catch a hint of tint in certain environments, and it doesn’t bother me much. Probably because I know it’s not consistent, but I prefer when I can’t see any.

I agree with @Matthews1127. This is an entirely personal choice with no right or wrong. However, since you are asking. I would go for the higher color asscher as step cuts show color more than other cuts. With a caveat. If you don't love it, if it isn't your HG stone, wait. Do not "settle". Wait to get exactly what you want within your budget of course. Or save more money to get the stone of your dreams if that would allow you to get your HG stone. JMO.

I have a 1.23 K asscher and I love it. With the great performance, the color is not evident. Although I do like K’s anyway and would not mind color. I personally would consider the smaller stone much too small to enjoy. That 1.5 is a nice size.737769

Your asscher takes my breath away.

If a 1.5 K blows her budget I'm sure that pre-loved 1.5 F Royal Asscher is nowhere near the budget! I guess a person can dream though!

Wisdom right there. Wish I had done this many a time.

Saw this and thought of you:

1.21 carats, I VS1. It's a royal asscher. If it has the same light performance as the other one looks to have that will be amazing.

Already set. A bit cheaper... Maybe within budget?

I've seen this one a few times and it always takes my breath away... H/VS1, .97ct and looks like a beautifully cut one! Good price, beautiful setting.

Breathtakingly gorgeous :kiss2:

Go with the one that make your heart sings as the others have commented.

I have an EC, it is a 1.19ct E VS1.

My mind clean is G/H colour, VS quality, and if I were to buy another substantial earth-mined diamond in a step cut, that's what I would opt for, with the best cut and in the biggest size my budget allows.

Each to their own and all that.

DK :))

Thank you! That's a totally sensible thought. In fact, I did briefly wonder today, should I be waiting for my forever stone? Is there such a thing for me? Based on my hobbies, perhaps not? I do have a milestone birthday that I could put funds aside for by the time I work that out. It may well end up being another Asscher but I do love OEC's too. Much food for thought!

Oh my... #goals That's all I can say about your Asscher... Thank you, as I think you've possibly swayed me in thinking. I suspected that a smaller stone is going to disappoint me sooner than a lower colours big stone. That K tho. Barely a hint of warmth in that photo.

@lydial @Matthews1127 & @tyty333 Oh I love being enabled but yes, a bit out of my current budget *cries*
But seeing this does make me consider if there is indeed a forever stone out there for me. Hmmm...

Thank you! Oh wow... I think I could be happy with 1.2. It'll be a milestone purchase though I think *cries again*

Oh that is gorgeous!! And we're in the ballpark for budget. Thank you. I'm going to drool over it for a while!

Which one makes your heart go pitter patter when you look at and think about it?

Funnily enough, the one Asscher that really took my breath away is only 0.6 but had the most beautiful buttery tone at I colour (GIA called it). I'm beginning to think that my high colour consideration is a 'should' rather than 'want'. I may take a step back and listen to my heart.

I can't tell you about one stone vs the other.
I can say that whenever I've "settled" , I never was fully happy & didn't stop thinking about what I truly wanted.
I always wanted a heart diamond; wasn't given any choice for my engagement ring.
Like you, when I finally went to look at hearts they were all meh. None made my heart sing & I also questioned if my Hg stone was put there, or if I should go for a different shape.
But I knew I would never be satisfied. So I waited & searched until I found my hg heart diamond that still makes my heart sing.

Don't give up & don't settle.

As far as size, I will add these thoughts. Here is a photo of my 1.23 next to a stone that is 1mm larger.
I was completely surprised at the size difference with just 1mm.
And when I am looking at diamonds I always reduce the photo to real life size to get persepctive. Oh...and there is that app that lets you see how big the diamond will look your finger size. I can’t remember what the app is called, but someone here will know.

Would you consider this?
Or are you WANTING 1.2ct+?

Commented there. She's magnificent! I would save up a bit more for it but others' replies have got me thinking about size too lol I probably could go K/L but bigger. More research needed! Thank you tho.

Yes! The huge magnified photos certainly don't help so I've been keepings things in perspective with my ruler and other stones on hand. I think I wouldn't be sad with 1.2 but that extra 1mm does make a difference. I actually went for a marquise as my first purchase as I was convinced I would get more bang for my buck over an Asscher (and I still love that 10.5mm spread up my finger) but it still hasn't quelled my Asscher thirst. I think I do know now that I need something well over 1ct so I'll keep saving and looking. Thank you for the reference!
