You can’t do anything about the situation @StephanieLynn, try not to worry too much, hopefully he’s not contagious and won’t be a risk to anyone else, or exposed to more risk when he gets back.

On another note I really wish media would stop reporting about this Harvard study that found we may have to socially isolate until 2022 OR until a vaccine.

Why give that timeline even if it is true? We need a vaccine, okay but people are already having trouble with being isolated and possibly becoming mentally unwell, they do not need to think of the possibility of being isolated for two years! Ugh!

Agree. Beyond unhelpful and it even mentions going through 2024. If you want to make people just give up, that is a way to go about it.

I have been so on edge all this week, even though I'm working and yes, get a paycheck. But when I read that this is how it's going to be for another 2 to 4 years? It makes me want to say to hell with it all. I would rather just not.

@elizat, 2024?! Oh heck no with that. Maybe I should just join the "daily happy hour" thread now since I'm going to need a new hobby!

Wow, @Austina , I'm shocked the healthcare situation is like that in the UK. I didn't know.

In continental Europe family doctors and anyone outside icu are reported to have too few patients now. No elective operations, people not going to the ER if they can avoid it at all, telemedicine for many renewal visits.

ETA... Just checked:

We have a central internet Dr. booking system in France and I can see that it's true for many doctors. I could get appts for every specialist I can think of within 1-10 days.

I'm sorry you guys have to deal with that.

@Karl_K How are you feeling today?
up and down, had about 3 hours of my o2 staying consistent with 5L from my concentrator and getting some sleep.
Its back to being all over the place.
The concentrator doesnt have enough flow pressure to deal with it and tanks run out in jut a few minutes at high flow. Hospital would be higher pressure higher flow which is the ideal for me when like this.....
o2 flow from concentrators isnt enough to keep up with bipap at this flow rate.

Talked to SIL last night and "J" is indeed very sick, he has been sick for a month with GI problems that have now escalated and without getting too graphic, he is at risk for sepsis. He can't even walk without falling down multiple times to get to the bathroom. Apartment is a mess, he has been paying someone to take care of his dog since he is not capable.

He has no respiratory issues and no doctors that he has seen prior think he has COVID which could explain why he can't get tested. I think she felt she had to go get him to save his life, it is that dire. He will continue paying someone to care for his dog while he is gone. They are supposed to be flying back this morning.

Everything I’ve read says that COVID-19 escalates into lung issues at some point with the bowel issues. This guy probably has c. Diff or crohn’s or colitis. People need to stop freaking out that he’s bringing something contagious onto the plane. This girl is trying to save his life. I understand that. He doesn’t have the symptoms of coronavirus...not even close.

@House Cat, yes he is in terrible shape, she was worried he would die in the U.K. Also she can't take care of him herself and there really is nobody else to help.

I was never going to call the airline and stop them from flying with the limited information I had and thank goodness for that. Though I admit it was upsetting she was getting on a plane during a pandemic initially, if someone I loved was in the same predicament I would do the same thing.

@StephanieLynn I am glad the dog is being well cared for and I hope all goes well with the plan to come here and hope he finds the treatment necessary and recovers fully. And relieved it isn't Covid 19 for everyone involved.

That would be very upsetting to me too. She must have a huge heart or she must love him very much.

@House Cat, she is still close to him and his family, she has spent holidays with them since the break-up. His family actually paid for the dinner after my MIL's funeral. They are great people, I know they would do anything for my SIL.

I'm scare but not to the point thinking that if I step out the door I'll catch the virus. I'm not that paranoid.

I see people here wearing masks while they are driving! Alone in a car...
I think we need to step up our game.

Just a Corona virus anecdote fyi.
We all know that virus is contagious. But that's scary:

My friend (my friend since elementary school and flatmate in Uni) is a GP in Germany.
A long time patient came into her practice after having called with CV like symptoms after a trip. She was advised to stay at home and call the specialised ambulance.

She has mental health problems , panicked and came in nonetheless.
When she opened the door the secretary told her to freeze, the doctors and a nurse came out. They told her to leave, she started to argue/yell in the entry area. They put on masks and the nurse walked her out. She swabbed her for Covid outside. Nurse waited for the specialized ambulance outside with a mask and more than 6 ft away. She was not inside more than 5 minutes.
They called the authorities. They were advised not to worry and that they weren't eligible for testing, since the suspected patient was in there less than 15 minutes and hadn't been in a hot spot area (area was declared hot spot two days later...). Lady hadn't touched anyone.

Lady got tested positive (thanks to the sample THEY TOOK) . My friend being a GP got told from disease control authorities not to worry. She tested everyone in the practice regardless - because she CAN and doesn't want to infect her patients.

Patient infected her secretary (2weeks of CV feeling miserable ) the nurse (2 weeks in hospital) and the doctor colleague (ventilator in icu).

She also infected her patient who walked out past the Lady after her own consultation!!!!!
They closed for one week and now, three weeks later the
Secretary was feeling fine. She tested positive 5 days after the last symptoms.

That sh$T is so contagious. And they were only able to test because they are doctors.

For everyone else it's a guessing game.

Friend called me to vent. She says not panicking is one thing, but downplaying that virus is criminal and she has no clue why Germany has such a great success. For her that disease management sucked so hard. Rarely heard her so absolutely furious.

I wondered about that as well as people here are wearing masks while driving. My conclusion is it is better not to touch the mask and possibly infect oneself that way and just leave it on til you can get home and wash your hands with soap and water and then remove the mask disinfect it and again wash your hands and face too. So basically just leaving it on gives you less of a chance to infect yourself as removing it and putting it back on without proper protocols is risky.

Ugh that is super scary. Thank goodness her staff is OK now...how is her colleague doing that was on the ventilator? And the patient that got infected from that lady? And how is the original patient doing who came in and infected everyone?

Exactly. I didn't wear it on the way to the store yesterday but after I left I didn't take it off until I got home and jumped in the shower.

No one died, but the colleague won't be able to work for some time. The innocent bystander patient is recovering at home. She was miserable. For a while my friend was worried she might sue. Especially if dealing with any after effects. Which she won't. That's good news for her.

I'm not sure about the lady, actually, because she was unstable the risk of her not self quarantining was too high, so they hospitalised her. I didn't ask if she was kept there for longer / how they handled that/ if she needed IC. They were able to take her in b/c their town hasn't got many cases and they have one of the best university hospitals in the country. So: not many citizens, age on average low because of many med and other students, big capacity. And my friend studied medicine there and her hubby is a Dr in that hospital too. Otherwise that Lady would have been a huge problem:

Covid19 positive, not to be trusted to self quarantine, not able to get into temporary psychiatrical care because highly infectious, not sick enough yet to be in hospital.

Thanks for sharing this with us @kipari it really drives home the fact that this virus is super contagious and very variable in the way it affects people. For some it is vicious. I am glad your friend and her staff and innocent bystander patient are OK.

Honestly I'm not really worried About catching the virus. For the better half of March I was down with flu like symptoms after my sister travelled and came home from Japan. I came to see a doctor At a Covid Center but wasn’t tested because there was a shortage of test kits. But I was classified as a PUM or person under monitoring. I’m recovered since then. Again am I worried about catching Covid? No. Am I worried about passing it on (if ever I do get infected) to other specially to my mom? Yes. There I have been on strict isolation and quarantine for a month now.

How do I actually summize how I feel about Covid? I’m simply near the point of being tired. Tired about this lockdown. Tired about how I feel helpless. But that’s not to say I’m gonna break quarantine anytime soon. 2 family friends have died. A classmate and another family friend both doctors recovered. Part of me wishes what I had in March was mild covid just to get it over with. Honestly isolation is driving me nuts. I summize from this experience that human contact is essential. No facetime or video call can make up for it.

Wow! That is horrible! I understand being afraid, but what she did was completely self centered.

Reading this makes me wonder how many people out jogging/biking right now are getting infected as the pass by each other even a few feet away. It also makes me glad that I have not been going to the store as it sounds like walking just near someone (which you can't help in a store!) is enough to get infected.

Yes. The virus travels much further than 6 feet. You’re smart to stay inside! How’s your DH today?

Ir is really concerning the amount of people that are reckoned to be asymptomatic carriers. Also the focus has been on a dry cough and fever as core symptoms but so many people are now reporting other symptoms that could just as easily be a common garden cold or stomach bug! ::) Also we are now into hayfever season.
