Are you one of those PSer who would buy a stone today...

As of now, I have three pieces of jewelry I will only part with when I pass them on to my children. They are my great-grandmother’s cross pendant and chain, my grandmother’s wedding band, and my engagement ring from my late husband. Everything else has varying degrees of sentimentality and some I would try to hold on to longer than others if situations came up that meant I had to liquidate.

That said, I would absolutely buy something I knew I’d potentially upgrade in the future. However, I would do what I could to buy what I felt would be “enough” to not find myself wanting to upgrade.

For me it isn’t so much wanting a bigger version of what I already have, but rather wanting something different than what I already have for fun of having a variety.
 
I think buying or receiving a diamond as a gift has some emotional involvement and or attachment. How strong that attachment is usually dictates if the diamond will be resold for an upgrade later down the road. What I like now is different than what I liked years ago so when I buy something I fully realize that I might change my mind later. There are a few family pieces I would not part with for sentimental reasons, but truth be told I rarely wear them so they are collecting dust in my jewelry box and will likely collect dust in my children's jewelry box when they are passed on to them.

I don't think I am. I'm more of a collector:
  • semi-bezel - check
  • cushion-shaped MRB halo - check
  • scatter band - check
  • Trinity ring - check
  • Emerald cut three stone - still waiting
  • OEC in an engraved band - still waiting
 
I had no such intentions, but with WF's awesome upgrade policy, I ended up switching stones much sooner than I intended. :P2
 
I am one of those super sentimental people who would never give up those pieces with memories and feelings attached to them. I still have a silver talisman pendant from my grandfather that my mom said i used as a teething ring . . . it's so mangled that you can't make out any of the etchings anymore . . . but i still wear it at least once a week.

But if I knew that I was buying a stone solely for upgrade purposes then yes...I would 100% do it. It's sort of how I plan on obtaining a holy grail item. I know I can't afford to just drop the 50k-70k fora diamond now, so I'm ok with patiently upgrading until it's the size i want.
 
I would never sell mygrandmother's diamond or jewelry that was passed down to me through my family. Those pieces will be for my children and, hopefully, my children's children. Or if my husband chose something for me, without my input, I would not trade that.

But anything I buy for myself is fair game. I feel far less sentimental about those things because it's me making me happy. So if I'm happy with my purchases, I will hold onto them, maybe indefinitely. But if I'm feeling the need to move forward and trade up (or down) and if I can afford to upgrade using my own resources, then maybe I would consider doing that down the road. :think:

I definitely don't need an upgrade. I am getting some very nice wood floors though. :lol:
 
Truthfully, I feel a little silly answering this, since I *just* got a new ring. :lol: For me, the only ring I am super sentimental about is my original, antique engagement ring. All other rings/jewelry have their own stories, but I feel more sentimental about the person (DH), and the all the love/time that went into the ring, rather than the ring itself. That said, I do LOVE LOVE LOVE my new ring. :D I think it somewhat boils down to whether you are a person who likes variety and change.
