Mmm, pie.

That''s what I''M talking about!

Have you ever seen the Weebl and Bob flash animations? They are obsessed with pie, and it''s so funny. If you ever have a free 10 minutes go look them up

Me and my bakery friends find pie to be wholly substandard to CAKE. What''s with that DRY CRUST ... and the soggy bits that stick to the pan. Where''s the ICING? I mean, I have eaten literally TONS of desserts in my extensive baking training and I''d have to say PIE comes at the very bottom of my "must taste" list ... below Flan ... below CoolWhip Pineapple Jello molds forgoddsake!
14.gif
But I''d never say that in a pie store. Heaven forbid!

Deco, I no longer can be friends with you. I have long said on PS that PIE CRUST is my favorite thing ever (I tolerate the rest to get the pie crust).

However, I will say that lately, the perfect COOKIE trumps all. The most perfect blend of sweet and salty.

Pie crust lover! What, did your tastebuds get caught on a cactus?

Yep, precisely.

Like I said, 'blunt' to me requires a present subject. If I knew that Susan Boyle were a PS regular and reading that thread, I would call my posts 'blunt' (even though I could have been much more so). Since she isn't (to my knowledge), it doesn't feel like 'bluntness' to me, it's just me sharing my opinion in a neutral area. Well, in theory neutral, because it didn't occur to me that anyone would have such a vested interest in her!
Well we can agree on something then. As to the 'vested interest' ... mwhahahaha. If someone defended Pilot Charles 'Sully' Sullenberger against comments about his 'stupid, outdated mustache' do they have a 'vested interest' in him? I guess I'm a Boyle-bot, now?
19.gif
You're acting like I've been bringing this up ad nauseum. Linkies?
You seemed honestly offended in the original thread, and brought it up elsewhere afterward (here, and I remember seeing one other time but don't file links away). So it did come across as more than just a passive "well, *I* like her" kind of reaction. Otherwise it would just be free exchanging of opinions (like the American Idol thread, where even though I was a *huge* supporter of Anoop for personal reasons, I was in no way defensive when people had a differing opinion of him). I see people openly criticizing (and sometimes outright bashing) people that I personally like, some of whom are acquaintances of mine (and that I do have a vested interest in), but I mostly keep my mouth shut (with a couple of "aww, she's not that bad
7.gif
" exceptions).

I felt put on the spot and tried for my slander crimes, as it were... it just seemed like a big reaction to me for a passive semi-fan. That's all. No judgment or assumption beyond that.

You''re right ... I was mildly offended by the tone of superiority that I perceived you taking ... as if your training made your opinions more valuable than the rest of ours AND at your resistance to hints that the thread was more of an "Oh my god how fabulous" Show Me The Ring dealie than a "Let''s pile on this ho" Rocky Talky free-for-all. I don''t even LIKE Susan Boyle. But I felt badly that the buzz was so brutally murdered by, yes, a critique. You weren''t the only perpetrator of that crime BTW ... just the one most memorable *to me*.

I''m sorry for putting you on the spot in this thread. I thought I had a clever observation to share with you. You thought I''m Susan Boyle. The whole thing is beyond ridiculous now so: fini from me.

It wasn''t meant to be a critique (I think of that word as serving a constructive purpose, and since I wasn''t speaking to Susan Boyle... you know?), it was sharing of my personal reaction/opinion that was questioned/not understood, that turned into expansion of where my opinion came from.

Is this a critique of my use of the word critique? How blunt! C''mon ... OF COURSE I''M KIDDING. I just thought it was funny to read how being blunt just ''isn''t your lifestyle'' yet in the Susan Boyle thread you were talking about your gang finds it fun to dissect performances down to their vaguest nuances. Seemed contradictory! But I''m not like hunting you down looking for inconsistencies or anything. I thought you''d chuckle at the observation. WhatEVS.

For the record, I'm sorry for EVER giving that impression. My citing my experience was an attempt at explaining the origin of my (unpopular) opinion, not an attempt at elevating it to higher importance than others. My background says NOTHING about the value of my opinions, just the reasoning behind them - and I never, ever intended to insinuate otherwise. I'm just a tougher critic in that area because of what I've been exposed to in the past (as most people would be) - but tougher does not mean "better" or "more accurate at judging wide audience appeal," which I of course noted in that thread, as well.

As to resisting hints about it being a 'let's talk about how fab-o she is' thread, I've just so rarely seen that in hangout that it didn't OCCUR to me. Given the nature of other threads on similar subjects, I had absolutely no frame of reference that would indicate it being a SMTR-style thread. I didn't appreciate being told that my opinion wasn't welcome just because it didn't it with the happy-go-lucky feel that I had no idea was the goal.

In the future, maybe we need some LIW-like ground rules for threads. If it's supposed to be gushy only, we need a "no dissenting opinions welcome here" disclaimer - because otherwise, there is no way to know. Though now I do know which is why I've said that there will be no more discussing of the entertainment industry from me.

Mmmm....TGal, you need to check out Sable aka Sand cookies. I can''t imagine where you might find them though, being all French and not chocolate chip cookies. They are FANTASTIC.

90% bluntly honest.....especially with closest friends and family and of course, Greg. my best friends are those who appreciate that the most about me because they are the same way, i love it. but at work i am VERY 'diplomatic' about saying things, i get compliments on it all the time and i have people who come to ask me how to help them phrase things. kinda funny.

speaking of prickly, has anyone had prickly pear before?? we just were in AZ and i had it in margaritas, it's very sweet and SO GOOD.

I''m a straight shooter. It''s not as if I could lie about that here on PS.
9.gif

But I don''t think bluntness is necessarily unkind. It doesn''t have to be.
Ditto. You can tell the truth without being rude and without sugar-coating it, IMO. At least that''s my intent. Sometimes people find my comments too straightforward for their liking. But then again, when someone needs to hear the whole truth and nothing but the truth, they come to me and say "I know you''ll be honest with me" and I like that.

As others on here have said, I try to be honest and straight forward without being unnecessarilly harsh. Conversely, I also do NOT lie about things just to spare someone''s feelings if I feel pressured by them to do so (eg: someone buys a new article of clothing and shows it off to you. It might be nice but it''s not to your taste. What do you do? Tell them the TRUTH about what you think about it? Why hurt their feelings when it''s not necessary? It''s just YOUR opinion. It doesn''t mean it''s nice or not - just that YOU don''t like it, right?)

I have a trick for that - it''s amazing how much you can get away with by just commenting ABOUT it. Say something like "Oh, you got a new jacket! Where''d you get it? Yeah, yellow is REALLY in this season isn''t it!" and the person then gets to talk about their fabulous new item and doesn''t even realize that you never once said that you liked it! Problem solved.......

Depends on who it is I''m talking to. Some people fall to pieces if I give it to them straight, so I sort of have to ease them into my point of view to keep them from seizing up and blocking me out. Still not quite sugar-coating, but definitely not blunt either. For most, I''m tactfully blunt. However, there are those that require ye olde sledgehammer approach and even the bluntest of blunt comments don''t get the point across.
