After having had my ring almost a year (eeek) I am realizing I really need to get this baby insured!

First, backstory: A number of months ago (spring I think?), I contacted Bill Castro (recommended here) who was extremely nice and helpful and told me he could get the ring insured essentially as soon as I provided him with an independent appraisal - which I didn''t have at the time. I searched PS, heard great things about Justin Krall, and contacted him by email. He replied (by email) that day or the next and we proceeded to discuss when I could come by. After another email or two he asked me which of two days would be better for me. I replied "Tuesday" and suggested a time. I never heard back from him. I called him on both Monday & Tuesday, along with sending an additional email (or two), but his phone was apparently disconnected (?) and there was an odd automated message indicating that we could not leave a message either. I sent him another email (or two) after Tuesday passed, indicating that there had been phone problems and asking if the appraisal could be set for the next week. Again, I didn''t hear back from him, at which point I basically got sick of messing with it all, and have not seriously tried to get the ring appraised in the intervening months. The reason I tell this story is because I was just searching on PS for another NYC appraiser and saw that another PSer had a similar experience with Justin in June of this year (with the same phone issues as well), so I searched for his name, and then came across this thread which someone indicated that they believed to be about him as well (the appraiser in question is left unnamed).

Now, after my unpleasant experience with simply trying to get ahold of him a number of months ago, in addition to the story above which may or may not be about him, I have decided definitely not to go with him. While he may really have been having phone and/or email issues, and I have no concrete reason not to go with him, the experience has just left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, so I want to just begin this fresh without any lurking doubts. Also, he has been removed from the Pricescope list of appraisers, which doesn''t do much to alleviate my concerns.

But the other horror stories listed in that thread are making me nervous about completely starting from scratch!!! Just Appraisers, the other recommendation I have seen here, also had a negative story in that thread, although they did post in response and try to make right by the PSer with a bad experience, so perhaps that was isolated?

Long story short: does anyone have any good recommendations for NYC appraisers? We don''t have a car, so it would have to be somewhere subway-accessible (aka not Long Island, where several people made recommendations that I saw in my searches)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

It is amazing to me that,in NYC,and in the heart of the Diamond District, there is such a shortage of recommended appraisers. I have not been satisfied with the one I used and have not been able to find another.
I hope some names can be addedto the list.

Solange - your story is one of the ones that scared me!! I''m sorry you had to go through all that!!

Does anyone else know of anyone? It''s such a big city, I find it hard to believe there really aren''t any great appraisers here!!

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with Justin.I had a similar experience where I sent a few emails his way about his services and am still awaiting a response

After I got my stone, I looked at a lot of appraisers in the NYC area and got quite frustrated after awhile. It's a lot tougher then it seems finding a good independent appraiser in this town that works on a fee basis.

When all was said and done, however - I went with Just Appraisers and haven't looked back since. They are within walking distance from most 42nd street subway stops East or West side.

They are a little on the pricer side, but well worth it. Toby Smart was extremely knowledgeable, pleasant, and took a lot of time to explain what he was doing and why throughout the entire process.

Thanks luvthatstone! Just Appraisers does seem like it may be my best bet. I''ll probably contact them soon if no one else has any great ideas!!

Toby Smart sounds like a good choice. He was not the person I dealt with and he sounds like a good bet.
I am anxious to know if you decide to go there, how it works out. I might try him too.

How about Deborah Villepigue? She is on the pricescope list and I have heard good things about her from the boards (I did not go to her).

Why not hop the train to Philly from Penn Station, it''s a short cab ride to Dave Atlas''s office from 30th St. Station in Philly.

Just a thought.

That sounds like the best idea of all. No guesswork there. But it does seem strange that there is not a great selection of reliable appraisers in the diamond district.

Hmmm, that does sound a bit appealing...and I''ve been meaning to visit a friend who moved to Philly anyway!

Does anyone know if Dave Atlas has any weekend hours?

Otherwise it sounds like Toby Smart will probably be the way to go...

Thanks everyone for the advice!!!

I think he is open on Saturdays.

I suggested him because I think you''ll get more attention, and they will possibly spend more time with you than the NY guys.

The pace is a lot more "relaxed" in Philly, while on 47th St. everyone is more hurried.

I think Dave has a lot more equipment than the average appraiser on 47th St. too. The more equipment ( providing of course it is operated properly) presents a far better level of information and conclusive data than you''d get from a local who maybe only has a microscope.

There are some good appraisers in NY, but most are out of the city.

Thanks, RockDoc! I think we''ll try to make an appointment with him soon. It would just be nice to 100% trust my appraiser without any lingering doubts.
