Hello to all on the forum. I've been a long time lurker on this wonderful forum and have learned quite a bit about the ins and outs of diamonds from all of you. I have been looking to purchase an engagement ring for my girlfriend for the past 6 months or so, but only recently have I been serious about pulling the trigger. I would like to know what you all think about this stone I found on whiteflash last night.

www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2424957.htm#

any help with evaluating this stone would be great! Does it seem like a good value?

Re: Apologies on this being my first post, but need help ASA

cant go wrong with a ACA. And i think an I VS2 stone is a great way to get size and the visual color/ clarity a girlfriend expects.

How would you set it??

Re: Apologies on this being my first post, but need help ASA

Gorgeous diamond! I think she will love it!

Re: Apologies on this being my first post, but need help ASA

Looks like a very good diamond at a competitive price. Good for you for reserving it before posting!

Re: Apologies on this being my first post, but need help ASA

Thanks for the advice and words of encouragement. She has always been a big fan of bezel or half bezel settings. Whiteflash has a couple settings that I'm considering, but haven't made up my mind yet. Ive been considering:

http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/true-love-diamond-engagement-ring-510.htm

Thoughts?

No thoughts, just observations. The first setting strikes me as being more contemporary. It also sits lower, which might be a consideration if - for example - your GF is in the medical field and is putting on and removing latex gloves all day. The second looks strikes me as having more traditional lines, and on the contemporary - to - elegant continuum, it's more elegant.

They're both beautiful. For my taste, I'd probably go with the second.

If your GF has very contemporary or artistic taste, have you considered a true tension setting?

ETA you might also want to check out this thread, which was also about the search for half-bezel settings.

Re: Apologies on this being my first post, but need help ASA

I had the WF True Love setting and can vouch for the fact that it is a beautiful, graceful setting - a wedding band can flush-fit against it - I loved the slim 2.1mm shank and also really appreciated the profile view - in comparison, while I like the overall design of the Keystone, I don't like that much of the inner shank is hollowed out, and I'm not sure how a wedding band would fit against it since it is 3.3mm at the top tapering down to 2.5 at the bottom. (Disclosure: I no longer have the True Love as I switched out to the WF heavy half-bezel setting, which I adore and wear as a standalone - no wedding band)

Thanks for that link Niel! Mary, I have the same reservations about the keystone, the hollowed out band just seems like it would get too dirty. I'm still on the hunt for a setting through whiteflash, but at this point I may have to get the diamond set locally.

I accept your apology for this being your first post.

Wondering this, too... Can't wait to see the finished product!! Make sure to post in SMTB forum!!!

Re: Apologies on this being my first post, but need help ASA

The price from whiteflash and local jeweler were very similar. I felt more comfortable having a local shop handle it just in case there are any issues with sizing, mounting, plating etc. It just seems easier in my mind to get customer service face to face in this aspect of the ring. Also, wasnt quite sure of return policy on loose stone if it was mounted in a setting. (Just in case I found something not to my liking about the diamond)

Re: Apologies on this being my first post, but need help ASA

oh ok makes sense. what color metal did you go with? if its 14k white, i might consider not plating it. They use a metal that stays white on its own, and that way, you never have to pay to replate it :) jsut a thought

Can't wait to see it!!!

Re: Apologies on this being my first post, but need help ASA

Agree with earlier poster having WF do the mounting of the stone, they will resize, etc if need be.
So you get the diamond from WF and the local jeweler chips the stone during mounting, let the finger pointing begin.
My 2 cents. Best of luck.

Quick update. Should have the ring on the 23rd of this month. Thank you for all the advice. I was informed by both my local jeweler as well as whiteflash that the stone would be sent to ritani for setting. Either way its in writing that the stone is fully insure until I take possession of the completed ring. After that its all on me.

On a side note is their a general consensus among forum members whether to insure through homeowners or a standalone policy?

cannot wait to see this!!

I'd do a stand alone as you don't want your house prem to increase over a jewelry claim

Re: Apologies on this being my first post, but need help ASA

Alright, just picked up the ring. Sorry for cell phone pics, but they actually turned out decent. Couldnt be happier with the service from Judith Arnell jewelers in downtown Portland.
