So, my husband has agreed to let me get a new diamond band for our upcoming anniversary, and I intend to use IDJ. I love the 5 stone bands, but I wouldn't be able to afford the size stones for the coverage I would need. (I wear a 7.5 most of the time and figured I would need about .40 each to really look good.) So, that leaves me with 7 stone bands. My question is, for a roughly $800 difference, would you really be able to see a difference between .20 stones and .25 stones? Does the extra money really buy you a whole lot better coverage?

Also, it seems on the 7 stone bands I have seen here that the last stone in the row tends to get lost between the fingers to that you don't really see it most of the time. Would I just do as well to maybe get a 6 stone with .25's? Any thoughts are appreciated.

I would need more info but depending on clarity and cut stats, I would most likely pay the additional $800 for the .25 stones or get a 6 stone band of .25s if price were a factor. I am able to detect a size difference between the two. And I just feel to go from .20 to the .25 mark is worth it.

This is an interesting thread for me. I owned this band, the Aurora from BGD, with 5 30 pointers and 8 eight pointers:

It was too much bling for me. I felt too conspicuous.

So, if I ever manage to save up the money to buy myself a nice 7 stone band, this is going to be my exact dilemma.

Have you been to local stores and tried on 5 stones with 20 pointers and 25 pointers to compare them side by side? If not, then you should. I've done it. And though I personally have realized that I prefer smaller bling because I don't like to feel conspicuous. (A 5 stone with 35-40 pointers would be way too much for me), was surprised at how much I liked the 25 pointers. That said, the difference was small. So for 800 if you like big bling, yes, it might be worth it for you.

But go try it on first.

Have you thought about how settings affect the coverage too?

For me this is my dream setting. It lets me get more coverage. A delicate low bar set. This one is actually 20 pointers.

That said, have you thought of buying this instead: http://www.bluenile.com/tapered-garland-diamond-ring-in-18k-white-gold_49890?elem=img&track=product It's what my Aurora Band was based on. And if you like a lot of bling, this would be very good for you.

I just got a 7 stone (size 7) with 20 pointers. You might want to check out my thread to see finger coverage etc.

You might also look through this 5 stone thread to check out different stone size stones on different finger sizes. Most of them are large
carat weight but you will find some with 20 ptrs and others with 25 pointers. You have to pay attention to finger size too though
because some PSers have tiny fingers (not me though :cheeky: ).

Edit...here are .25s on a 6.75 finger...it is a 5 stone though but you get the idea.

I'm thinking if the .25s fit in the budget that you might like the extra size on a 7.5 finger.

Edit ...BTW...I went from a 5 stone to a 7 stone for the extra coverage. I dont think you'll be sorry with a 7 stone (I'm
sure not).

Thank you, RockBrat and Gypsy.

RockBrat, when I emailed Shulamit at IDJ I specifically requested the quote for Pricescope quality stones, so if I understand correctly the stones should be excellent cut but not necessarily H&A. And for savings purposes I'll get G-H stones vs. the F-G they usually use.

Gypsy, thank you for the link. I actually already had it saved on my computer for reference. The Aurora band is beautiful, and I have seen it come up multiple times in my research here for this project. I have tried on a 5 stone with .25, but I'll be honest and say that I haven't thought to look for them both to compare the two side by side. Duh, right? Makes perfect sense. Maybe this weekend we can shop it around. But in the event that I can't find the two bands to try next to each other, anyone have any other suggestions?

Could you manage to draw it out on a piece of paper? I've done that before when I couldn't work out a diamond size!

I have a 5 stone with 0.25s which I find is plenty of coverage for my size 6 finger.

tyty333, sorry I missed your reply earlier. I saw your ring when you posted the other day, and it's one I have saved. Thank you for that other link. I've looked through the 5 stone thread multiple times but don't recall seeing that one.

Snowdrop13, I've tried on a .25 band, but it doesn't quite cover completely edge to edge. I should try the paper cut-out, too. I also have emailed Shulamit some of these questions to get her opinion as she has no doubt seen all the sizes on several different fingers, and she can no doubt tell me for sure about stone size differences.
